Scarface: The World Is Yours is a video game developed by Radical Entertainment and published by Vivendi Universal Games. The game is based on and is a quasi-sequel to the 1983 motion picture Scarface with André Sogliuzzo hand picked by Al Pacino to provide Tony Montana's voice. It was released on the PC, PlayStation 2, and Xbox on October 8, 2006, and on the Wii on June 12, 2007. The PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions of the game were officially cancelled.
The game
Scarface: The World Is Yours begins in the last scene of the film, where Tony Montana is being attacked by Sosa's assassins. After Tony looks at his cameras and he sees that enemy gang members standing outside of his office doors he gets out his carbine assault rifle with a frag grenade launcher attached to it and says "You wanna play games? Okay I'll play with you. You wanna play rough?! SAY HELLO TO MY LITTLE FRIEND!" And then blows down the door with the frag grenade launcher. After the famed final shot is fired, the player takes control of Tony, who then kills all the assassins, including the one who killed Tony in the film. His last surviving men inform him that the Police have arrived and raided the mansion, causing Tony to escape through an underground passage. He arrives in an undisclosed location, and begins making his recovery from the assassins' attack.
While recovering, he reminisces about the mistakes that he made while admitting he has a cocaine addiction. From that moment on, Tony goes cold turkey and vows to get revenge on Sosa. With his drug empire in shambles and his assets seized by the authorities, he must start from the bottom once again and rebuild his empire to get his vengeance. The game then starts on Tony's new path to glory - kill many of Tony's competitors, and finally raid the mansion of Sosa and kill him. The player makes contacts, friends, and sets up accounts with banks to launder your money, though this in itself takes a percentage of it depending on how far the player is in the game and how good his negotiation skills are.
The game has customization abilities and this can be done in various ways: changing outfits, buying cars, customizing the mansion through themes and also replacing the mansion with exotics, furniture, girls and other rare items (which, through a glitch in the game, always eventually disappear and have to be re bought, except for the Unique Collectibles items that can only be bought once).
Early on Montana buys his mansion back from the authorities and the game allows a great deal of customization. The player buys and deals his own cocaine using a mini game with which you try to get more cocaine for less money, and sell a gram of cocaine for more money. Novice players will end up losing money by buying expensive and selling cheap. The banks are used as the way to save and launder money, while also acting as save points.
Plot
The game takes place during the ending of Scarface, albeit on the alternate premise where Tony was able to avoid being killed by The Skull and instead kills The Skull. Forced to fight his way out, he kills off Alejandro Sosa's assassins and proceeds to gun his way out of the mansion. Sosa is contacted by his men on how Tony's empire is no more and how it is now split into pieces. Tony swears off cocaine and makes a vow to make up for his mistakes and kill Sosa. This is where the game begins.
Three Months Later...
Tony decides to contact one of his former lawyers, George Sheffield. The Vice decides to cut Tony a discounted deal to give his mansion back to him (albeit at its ruined state). After a reunion with one of his dealers Felix, Tony begins rebuilding his empire. The first task is to make a new bank account which will be monitored closely by Vice if he steps out of line with the cops as well as stealing a satellite phone from Gaspar Gomez's personal guard to make calls back to his thugs to deliver his car or to call his henchmen or just to make delivery calls.
To reclaim Miami as his, Tony reclaims Little Havana as his first step and runs a few errands in exchange for rights to buy fronts for his drug distribution. After reclaiming all but the Havana Storehouse, he decides to have a drink at the Babylon Club where he is attacked by Diaz Assassins again. To make things worse, Edgar Diaz and Alfonso Diaz send a hitman to kill the final connection of his family: His mother. In a blind rage, he dismembers Edgar and murders Alfonso in a car chase. Then Tony takes their storehouse and their cocaine shipment.
Tony is now able to get back his prestige, even buying Manny and Gina's cremated remains to remind him of his past mistakes as well as renovating his mansion. At this point Sheffield sends a delegation as he flees to Bolivia having betrayed Tony, and tries to get him killed using the possibility of finding Elvira. He is able to survive the assassination and begin retaking Downtown. Turning mainland Miami to his own piece of land, he now needs a loyal distributor to provide him with larger keys of Cocaine. He receives a deal with The Sandman who wanted to see Sosa fall as well. The Sandman also directs him to Venus who gives him a lead to Nacho Contrera's Casino Tanker. He then kills Contreras and claims his tanker (Not his Casino Tanker, a different Tanker called the Mothership) of Cocaine for future distribution as well as some immigrants who wanted to head to America and their leader.
After taking North and South Beach from Gaspar, The Sandman is attacked by the Ortega Cartel and Tony helps mount a counterattack to drive them out and receives a stable shipment of Cocaine in exchange for his effort. With his empire in firm control. He decides to hunt down Alejandro in Bolivia.
The final battle in Bolivia is an all or nothing assault as he kills his way through Sosa's thugs as well as George Sheffield and Gaspar Gomez who both die facing Tony. With only Sosa in his way, Tony guns him down and returns to Miami. A lone surviving thug begs for mercy, and Tony decides to hire him as a butler instead, jokingly referring to him by the name "Manny" (Probably in memorial of Manny Ribera). In the end, Tony relaxes in his mansion with his new girlfriend (or several girlfriends). He finally appears truly Happy, and bids "Goodnight to the Bad Guy" as the World is now truly his.
Development
The game was originally developed exclusively for the PlayStation 2, but ended up being ported for the Xbox, PC, and later the Wii. Cast members of the original movie lent their voices to the game, including Robert Loggia, Steven Bauer, and Al Israel.
The commercial for the game featured the Mötley Crüe song "Kickstart My Heart", although the song was not in the game. However, the band's drummer, Tommy Lee, played the role of the manager of Fidel's Records and Tapes.
Gangs
Montana Empire (Cartel)
The Montana Empire is a Cuban Drug Cartel led by Tony Montana, the organization was formed two times (In the film and in the video game), as the first formation was destroyed by the Bolivian Cartel (Led by Alejandro Sosa) and the second formation came three months after the first formation was destroyed. Montana's Second Formation improved by purchasing many of Miami's Famous Lounge's, Shops, Gambling Dens, Clubs, etc. Including taking all of the Storehouses situated in the city. Tony also makes an alliance with another Drug Lord named The Sandman, who is fighting a war with the Colombian Ortega Cartel in The Islands. Once Montana kills Sosa, he and his Empire have peace once again. Montana's Empire is also called Montana Enterprises presumably because of the Montana Logo's at each of the businesses owned. If you speak to one of your Business' Managers, Tony will mention that they're working for "Montana Enterprises Now".
Bolivian Cartel
The Bolivian Cartel is another Drug Cartel led by Alejandro 'Alex' Sosa. The Bovilian Cartel wipe out Tony's first Cuban Cartel formation by attemping to kill him at his mansion in the Shady Grove area of Miami. Montana forms a second empire three months after the botched assassination. And when Montana's Empire is in firm control, Montana murders Sosa at his Estate in Bolivia, this causes the Bolivian Cartel to crumble.
Gomez Crew
The Gomez Crew is a Mexican Criminal Organization controlled by Gaspar Gomez. Gaspar's Organization control most of Miami (North and South Beach), which makes them be the top gang of Miami when Montana is in a Three Month Hiding. Gaspar's Crew is eventually taken out by Montana, leaving Gaspar without turf and an Organization. Gaspar flees to Bolivia and forms an alliance with Sosa and Sheffield (Who fled to Bolivia sometime before Montana's Ambush at Freedom Town), but gets murdered in what was presumably Sosa's Bedroom at Sosa's Mansion when Montana attacks.
Contreras Gang
The Contreras Gang is controlled by Nacho 'El Gordo' Contreras. They run the Downtown area aswell as Marina Storage. They also own two Tankers in the Islands, one is a Casino Tanker and one is a Drug Distribution Tanker called "Mothership", but the Mothership gets taken by Montana after he defeats Nacho's Men on the Tanker and disables three bombs. Nacho gets killed by a Shark after being shot by a rifle used by Montana when trying to swim to a boat.
Diaz Gang
The Diaz Gang are led by The Diaz Brothers, Alfonso and Edgar. They control Little Havana which becomes Montana's first turf takeover before moving onto the Contreras Gang in Downtown. The Diaz Brothers eventually murder Tony's Mother and have their hired assassins kill Montana at the Babylon Club, Montana kills all assassins except one, who reveals that the Diaz Brothers killed his mother. Furious about this assault, Montana heads to Diaz Motors and dismembers Edgar with a chainsaw, and kills Alfonso in a car chase. Montana then decides to take over the Brothers' Storehouse, and take complete control of Little Havana. Felix (One of Tony's Dealers) reveals to Tony in the beginning missions that the Diaz Brothers and Nacho Contreras were having a gang war.
Sandman's Gang
The Sandman's Gang is a Drug Cartel operating in The Islands. It is led by The Sandman, who forms an alliance with Tony Montana after Montana takes over Marina Storage. The Sandman owns a small house in a village on one of the Islands, Lobster Cay, he also owns a Plantation on the same island his small house is on, he owns an Island called Tranquilandia in the North of the Islands which he uses as a drug processing lab, but the Ortega Cartel find and shut down the lab and hold three workers hostage. The Sandman sends Montana down to deal with them and rescue the three hostages, but one of the hostages have their arm blown off sometime before Montana's rescue, and only two hostages can be rescued. After the rescue mission (named "Tranquilandia"), the island is deserted when Tony explores it, but is probably used when Tony is not on the Island.
Ortega Cartel
The Ortega Cartel is a Colombian Drug Cartel moving in on The Sandman's Operations in The Islands. They find and shut down The Sandman's Drug Processing Lab Island, Tranquilandia, and hold three of The Sandman's Workers Hostage, but shoot one of the hostages arms off sometime before Tony's arrival to rescue the Island and Hostages. After Montana clears Tranquilandia of the Ortega Cartel, it is unknown if The Cartel is still active after the Tranquilandia Mission.
The Dock Boss' Gang
The Dock Boss' Gang are led by The Dock Boss and are the largest Oil Distribution Organization in the world, as said by The Dock Boss when you talk with him in order to complete a conversation. Montana helps The Dock Boss clear some thugs from his Docks before his men arrive, then take out an Informer who is threatening to tell the D.E.A. about The Dock Boss' Operations. The Dock Boss then helps Montana by sending two Helicopters to deal with Nacho's Men on another one of his Tankers (The Mothership) in order for Montana to claim the ship as his own.
Reception
The game has received generally favorable reviews. Metacritic reported 78% of critics, out of 48 reviews, for the Xbox version of the game. IGN gave it a review of 8.7/10, making it an Editor's Choice game, and Game Informer awarded it 85%. However, a number of reviews have been less favorable, with GameSpot only giving it 6.4 out of 10 and the G4 TV show X-Play giving it a 3 out of 5, and OXM giving it only 4.5/10. The PS2 reviews have been very similar to those of the Xbox, with the 80-90% range dominating but several notable sources voicing dissent. The PC version had been released with several bugs, especially in controls and map loading systems, thus giving the game mixed reviews, but with a similarly respectable average score of around 72-75% in Metacritic and GameRankings. Gamespot gave the Wii version 5.8 for what they thought was a poor control method, while IGN gave it an 8.5, praising the new controls and saying that it was the best version of the game available, scored slightly lower only due to its late release and nature as a last-gen port.
According to Game Informer and Vivendi Universal, Scarface: The World Is Yours sold over a million copies in North America, Europe, and Australia. The game has sold over 2.5 million copies since launch.[1]
