The Siege of Trencher's Farm is a book by British author Gordon Williams. Sam Peckinpah based his movie Straw Dogs starring Dustin Hoffman on the book.

Differences between the book and movie

  • Henry Niles and Janice Hedden never meet in the book. Hedden suffers from exposure in the snow, while Niles has murdered three girls before the novel began.
  • Janice Hedden is a mentally disabled eight-year old girl, not a teenager with a fancy for David Sumner or Henry Niles.
  • David and Amy Sumner are respectively called George and Louise Magruder.
  • George and Louise have an eight-year old daughter Karen in the novel.
  • In the novel, none of the beseigers die. Instead, they are badly injured and face charges.
  • In the novel, Charles Venner is not related to the Heddens and does not besiege the house. He is married and never was in love with Louise.
  • There are no rapes in the novel.
