Chappell's was a family-owned department store chain based in Syracuse, New York.

History

Chappell's was eventually purchased by Bon-Ton, and the stores carried the Bon-Ton name. However, many of the former Chappell's locations retain much of their interior layout and decor. In the hey-day of strip malls, Chappell's was seen next to grocery stores and other retail stores alike, such as in their former location in Seneca Mall. Many shoppers may remember their shopping experience as "the friendliest" because the salespeople were trained to create outfits from all lines in the store. If you went in for a sweater, their goal was to match it with slacks, shoes, and jewelry to match.

Their philosophy was "Personally Yours" and they were a favorite by retail shoppers for their yellow trademark gift boxes.

The company was active in the community, for example, customers could receive a discount for a woman's coat as a donation to Vera House and decorating a holiday tree with Barbie Dolls and accessories to raise monies in a silent auction and Barbie did carry a yellow gift box at the top of the tree. They also provided free gift wrapping with their signature gold wrapping paper and an annual scholarship award for a college student who worked for the company.

Chappell's Department Stores were known as the "Friendliest Stores."
