The Four Official System (More commonly known as the 4-man system), uses two referees and two linesmen in the game of ice hockey. This system is used in the NHL and other high-levels such as Major Junior hockey. In 2007-2008, college hockey used the system in some games on a trial basis. Some consider it to be more effective than the Three Official System, and others not. On one standpoint, in the three official system, there is only one referee, therefore there are a lot of missed calls behind the play. In the four official system, there are two referees, resulting in less missed calls as the back official can call a penalty that the front official may not see.
