Charmed Again (Part 1)
"Charmed Again (Part 1)" |
---|
Charmed Again is the first episode in season four of the The WB drama series, Charmed and is especially notable as the series cast and producers had to reinvent the series with the joint departure of creator Constance M. Burge and lead-celebrity starlett Shannen Doherty, both voluntarily to positions with other television series. Template:TOCnestright Transition to a new series format (which lasted five more seasons overall) and cast began in the last six or so episodes of the shows third season after Doherty accepted an offer to act in another series. Writing began to give Template:Chrmdchar and Template:Chrmdchar more prominence and a greater skill set, made them much more central to plot conflicts, and writers began easing Prue Halliwells superstar character into a more equitable relationship with her sisters when executive producer Brad Kern took over creative control of the series with Burge eased into a consulting role. Template:Chrmdchar became a regular cast credited co-star at same time half way through the second season.
Synopsis
Devastated about losing their sister Prue, Piper tries to bring her back using spells from the Book of Shadows. She casts a To Call A Lost Witch spell, but instead of bringing Prue back, it makes the newspaper with Prue's obituary appear in the office of Paige (Rose McGowan).
Paige somehow feels connected and goes to the funeral where she shakes hands with Phoebe, triggering a premonition of Paige getting attacked by Shax, the demon that killed Prue. Piper is not in the mood to save any innocents and wants to quit being a Charmed One because of the price they paid by losing their sister. But Phoebe doesn't give up and she and Cole follow Paige to save her from the demon. Phoebe and Cole are on a rooftop when they notice Shax attacking Paige, but she somehow orbs out of the way, looking shocked. Phoebe returns home and asks Leo to check if the girl is a Whitelighter. Leo does research, but the Elders don't know anything about her.
Cole then returns to inform Piper and Phoebe that The Source believes Paige might be a Charmed One. Piper is enraged and summons Grams, who informs the girls that she can't say anything since she is sworn to secrecy. Then Patty appears to Piper and Phoebe to explain that Paige who is their long-lost half sister from her whitelighter Sam. Since the Elders are against unions between Whitelighters and witches, Patty and Sam had to give up the baby for her own protection. At the same time, Darryl and a new Inspector, who suspects that the girls are practicing magic, break in secretly. In the attic, they find the girls with Grams and Patty.
After teleporting the Inspector to a far off land, Piper agrees to save Paige, but not in any intention of reuniting the Power of Three. Paige receives her powers fully when she comes to their house and the three girls join together under one roof. The demon Shax attacks them immediately after and the girls run to the Book of Shadows while Leo holds Shax off. It is here that Paige finds out that the girls are witches and that she is also. She helps them vanquish the demon Shax by reciting a spell, but is shocked and terrified in the process, running away from the house and her newfound sisters.

Production goofs
- After the funeral and it has Leo, Phoebe, and Cole talking about how to save Paige, Piper interrupts them. At that point they are in the foyer, next to the stairs, because when Piper is finished talking to them, she walks directly to the stairs. But after Phoebe proposes to Cole that they try to stop Shax from killing Paige together, it shows that the three of them are now in the hallway, but they didn't move after Piper left.
- When Piper (with Phoebe, Cole and Leo) call on Grams after learning about Paige, none of them light the circle of candles, though Grams and Patty both appear. Though in the next episode they light the candles to summon Patty. However the candles may have still been lit from when Piper summoned Gram's earlier that day and had just burned down so they could not be seen.
- As Piper, Phoebe and Leo are walking down the stairs just before they see Paige in the hallway, Piper is saying she wants to save Paige but not reconstitute the Power of Three. However when she shakes Paige's hand (with Phoebe beside them) this happens magically and she can not stop it.
- Paige has had half of her powers all of her life which are orbing and being a Whitelighter, although she appears to not have realised this for her entire life. There is a continuity issue here, because one would assume she had been extremely frightened at one point in her life before and would have orbed. In addition, the Elders would have picked up on the WhiteLighter activity even if it was unintentional.
- When Piper began to say the spell to bring back Prue, she never realized that the spell did indeed work and brought back the new Power of Three.
- When Piper first summoned Grams she told her that they couldn’t see Prue or talk to her for the time being. However, it was never again mentioned that they want to summon her throughout the five years with Paige. It is never clearly explained in the show as to why Prue was not able to be saved, one assumes that she was already dead but this is never stated explicitly. It is possible, that because Prue was bleeding badly from the head after Shax's attack, and she was attacked first that she was hurt more severely than Piper.
- In the scene at the Manor Phoebe tells Piper that it only took two witches (Prue and Piper) to vanquish Shax last time. Although time was indeed reset they appear to remember the events of the day as the episode is called back to several more times.
- When Paige read the newpaper in the first minutes of the episode, it had a biography of Prue. But, there were about 5 typos, like misspelling her name "Pru."
- Phoebe, Leo and Cole were in the underworld when time was reset, meaning that they remember everything.
