Where is my hook?

If you can't find the hook you submitted to this page, in most cases it means your article has been approved and is in the queue for display on the main page. You can check whether your hook has been moved to the queue by reviewing the queue listings.

If your hook is not in the queue or already on the main page, it has probably been deleted. Deletion occurs if the hook is more than about eight days old and has unresolved issues for which any discussion has gone stale. If you think your hook has been unfairly deleted, you can query its deletion on the discussion page, but as a general rule deleted hooks will only be restored in exceptional circumstances.

That's the problem with obit writers, they're not chemistry or bio experts. There's scores of proteins that allow cells to recognize each other (rather than molecules as stated in the obit) --> receptors. We need to specify that we're talking same cells and that it causes clustering. Any idea how to work that into a hook? - Mgm|(talk) 14:00, 27 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • If there is a reason to make an exception to Additional Rule A4, there is much precedent that a copyvio isn't such a reason (unless of course, we change that oft-controversial rule for everyone).   • The article was a cut-and-paste from the two sources I've linked above. If I didn't rescue the article, it would have been deleted as a blatant copyright infringement. Are you saying that I should have just allowed the article to be deleted under G12, and then recreated it as a new article so that it would qualify for DYK?   • Well, yes. This argument has also been presented a couple times before (less politely as I remember), and yet A4 remains unchanged. I didn't write A4, but I know there is no consensus, and no time, for analyzing and debating the quality of each previous article version before determining how many of its bytes to count.   • Of course it's not a requirement (Robert W. Floyd is another well-known example, and fine arts faculty usually have M.F.A.s) but in the sciences it's very rare, rare enough I think to be worth mentioning. The L.A. Times seems to agree; the second paragraph of their obit begins “An academic rarity who became a full professor without ever earning a doctoral degree.” Also, I think the rhythm of the hook works better with three clauses than with two, but if you prefer you could replace the third clause by "and was over 100 years old when he died". —David Eppstein (talk) 17:27, 26 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Second, websites like classmates.com are not considered reliable because anyone can submit info about themselves without it being vetted for accuracy.   • I looked at a few of the references cited. The one by McDermott looks more like a book typo (number 7 printed instead of 8). The second one (by Nair) describes how Swami revived a corpse at a burial, but not a word about his record age. I've moved the proper references in place, since it was confusing. No, the McDermott reference isn't a typo in the book. Her exclamation point after the dates makes that quite clear. As far as Nair, he gives the birth date as 1607 (p. 31)[1], and has him living into the late 19th century. Varishtananda, in the journal article "Varanasi: The City of Saints, Sages, and Savants", gives the same birth date. On page 633 it says "Trailanga Swami (c.1607-1887)". The sources for this are abundant - I realize such a long life is unencyclopedic, but in every instance it states clearly that 'according to some accounts', he was 'reputed' to have lived, etc. Priyanath talk 18:07, 25 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Do you mean the link didn't work at all for you? When I click on the link, and go to page 31, it says "In the year 1607...a son was born to Vidyavati...." Try again, and then reading page 31. It's at the very top of page 31, at the beginning of the first full paragraph. And did you look at the Yogananda link to the Wikisource article? Again, you have to scroll down, since I don't know how to link to a single sentence at Wikisource. About two-thirds of the way into the chapter it says "Lahiri Mahasaya had a very famous friend, Swami Trailanga, who was reputed to be over three hundred years old." Finally, I've uploaded a screenshot of the Varishtananda/Journal page here[2]. You'll see that it says "Trailanga Swami (c.1607-1887), famed for his yogic powers..." I request other reviewers to not take my word for any of this (or Poeticbent's word). Just go to every reference I've provided. I'll delete the screenshot when this process is finished. OK, I did check the references, and I verified both the previous paragraph by Priyanath and the paragraph before that by Poeticbent! That is, the first time "I click[ed] on the link" (referring to Nair, not Varishthananda) I got a blank page saying "You have either reached a page that is unavailable for viewing or reached your viewing limit for this book." But the next time I clicked the same link, I found what Priyanath told me I would find. As for Varishthananda, yes it cannot be confirmed online, except through Priyanath's screen shot. It's because that version consists mainly of a block quote, which isn't considered "prose" requiring expansion (Additional Rule A2), a list, and references, which also aren't "prose" (WP:DYK#Selection criteria 2.) IMO, this game of trying to cram the largest possible number of articles into a single hook is contrary to the purpose of DYK. The original hook proposed here is much too large to have any useful value in attracting attention to interesting new articles. Second Orlady's comment. We have already been subject to some nasty criticism for perceived award-collecting behavior, and putting an overlinked mass on the Main Page just for one user's gratification would not be appropriate and would subject us to more unneeded wikidrama. (No intention there to offend you, Doug Coldwell—you've done impressive work here and, no matter what happens with this hook, we will still remember that you were able to write and nominate 16 articles at once—it's just that this kind of hook would not be beneficial for the DYK project or for readers.)
Besides, if you break this up into a couple hooks (assuming that a few of these article subjects are notable enough to be in a hook independent of Appomattox Court House National Historical Park), your articles would get more airtime and more attention.
Personally, I believe it would be better to merge all those sub-articles into Appomattox Court House National Historical Park (that might even make it a good candidate for FL or FA), but this is not the appropriate venue for that discussion; it might be worth discussing at that article's talk page, though. Each of the period (Civil War) structures says in each article of that particular structure that the National Park Service says the structure is significant because it was in the Appomattox Court House National Historical Park (then the village of Appomattox Court House) at the time General Lee surrendered to General Grant. The end of the American Civil War has everything to do with each of these structures. The National Park Service has restored each of these structures because of this significance and they are all part of this history (the end of the American Civil War). Some have more important significance than others. For example: the McLean house is where Lee and Grant signed the surrender papers (picture of replica tables in the article). The Clover Hill Tavern is where the pardons (picture in the article of a typical parole) were printed for the Confederate soldiers, so they could return home with no hassle from others. --Doug Coldwell talk 19:46, 22 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I tend to agree with Ottava Rima. These buildings are not independently notable, and should probably be merged into the article on the National Historic Park. I'm sure the next step will be going to Colonial Williamsburg and Dearborn Village and other similar places and breaking it down building by building (The Men's Restroom at Colonial Williamsburg ...).   • Note: Would prefer using the first hook and not the ALTs as the first hook contains two pieces of information—March sentencing to prison and reality show. The ALTs only have information on the show, but I just added those hooks there incase.
