Talk:Iowa flood of 2008

- Nota Bene: This is essentially a work article, splitting off the Iowa section from the article June 2008 Midwest floods. Editors are encouraged to add to this article, at the same time leaving behind in the mother article a good synopsis of what transpires here. Please do not leave templates suggesting deletion until the end of June 2008, which is about the extent of the Iowa emergency. (01:57, June 14, 2008 Ace Telephone)
Organization
The floods will be organized by catchments. In the mother article I have already started so.--Ace Telephone (talk) 02:08, 14 June 2008 (UTC)
Naming
Why is "Great" in the name of this article? No media outlets are calling it that. 147.136.249.101 (talk) 04:13, 14 June 2008 (UTC)
- It's a back formation from the Great Flood of 1993. Great floods are great floods, and yes, this really is one.--Ace Telephone (talk) 06:11, 14 June 2008 (UTC)
- I got up this morhing and the Iowa City Press-Citizen has as its online headline, 'Great Flood of '08'. www.press-citizen.com 06-15-08 --Sephiroth9611 (talk) 15:08, 15 June 2008 (UTC)
- One media outlet calling it that (and do you have a direct link?) does not require we do so. I've renamed it to Iowa flood of 2008. Superm401 - Talk 15:02, 17 June 2008 (UTC)
- Iowa Flood of 2008 is sufficient. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.220.50.9 (talk) 08:18, 20 June 2008 (UTC)

June 17?
June 17 isn't here yet —Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.83.112.91 (talk) 11:45, 14 June 2008 (UTC)
Iowa City Timeline
I was working on collating news articles myself, but Press-Citizen has this up that would be ideal for mapping out the sequence of events along the Iowa River: Flood of 2008 timeline. --Sephiroth9611 (talk) 15:07, 15 June 2008 (UTC)
Continuing event
The Great Iowa flood of 2008 began before the June article, and is in fact a continuing 8 to 12 week event. Consider all that floodwaters flowing into the Mississippi, and the floodwaters it's experiencing. We expect that there will be a separate article on the Mississippi event.
And by the way, this heavily structured, footnote-dripping and rather long article would be difficult to merge. Only an experienced editor willing to put up with serious cry-to-admin abuse is competent to do it (the editor will have to click and inspect every footnote). This article is gonna get longer. --Ace Telephone (talk) 02:44, 18 June 2008 (UTC)
- I doubt there could be any move to merge. In and of itself, the Iowa event is pretty massive with both state and national repercussions. --Sephiroth9611 (talk) 16:58, 19 June 2008 (UTC)
No deaths
There has been one death during the flood, but it's not flood related —Preceding unsigned comment added by 12.217.212.109 (talk) 14:21, 29 June 2008 (UTC)
- Good news, compared to the 13 deaths during the March flooding:

Law Enforcement
During the height of the flood (June 12-20) the Cedar Rapids Police Department had relocated to the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena. Their dispatches were handled by the nearby Marion Police Dept.

Level of damage in Waterloo?
I think that Waterloo/Cedar Falls had considerable damage that was then overshadowed by Cedar Rapids...the biggest inconvenience was NOT that the bridges were closed. C'mon. Rawbery79 (talk) 03:12, 16 January 2009 (UTC)rawbery79
