Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) is a private, freestanding medical school and graduate school located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, United States. It was formerly affiliated with Marquette University.

The Medical College is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association (NCA) of Colleges and Schools and by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME). The NCA is the accrediting body for all institutions of higher education in the College's geographic region and the LCME is the accrediting body of all US medical schools.

More than 1,100 faculty physicians with the Medical College of Wisconsin provide adult and pediatric care to more almost 350,000 patients, representing more than 1.4 million patient-visits annually. More than 3,100 non-faculty staff support those efforts.

Education

There are over 1,200 students enrolled in education programs at the Medical College. This consists of about 820 medical students and more than 400 graduate students.

College faculty supervise approximately 650 physicians in residency training and 200 physicians in fellowship training through the Medical College of Wisconsin Affiliated Hospitals (MCWAH). Approximately 200 scientists are engaged in postdoctoral research fellowship training through the Office of Postdoctoral Education.

The Medical College also provides continuing medical education to more than 15,000 health professional registrants each year.

Its core competency is medical knowledge, which underpins every aspect of its mission. The Medical College grants Master's degrees, including the Master of Public Health (MPH), and doctoral degrees, including PhDs and the Doctor of Medicine (MD).

Research

As a major national research center, Medical College of Wisconsin faculty received $147 million in external support for research and training in fiscal year 2007-2008.

In 2007, the Medical College ranked 42nd among the nation's medical schools for National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding; MCW recieved $92 million.

The faculty conducts more than 3,000 research studies annually in all areas of medicine. In fiscal year 2007-2008, Medical College faculty and students reported 40 new discoveries and inventions. The College has over 250 pending and issued patents. The Medical College is home to eight federally designated national and international research centers.

History

The Medical College traces its roots to 1893 with the founding of the Wisconsin College of Physicians and Surgeons. In 1913 the Wisconsin College of Physicians and Surgeons and the Milwaukee Medical College merged to become the Marquette University School of Medicine.

In 1967 Marquette University, due to financial constraints, terminated its sponsorship of the medical school. The school then continued as a private, national, freestanding institution. Its name was changed in 1970 to the Medical College of Wisconsin. The Medical College has approximately 13,500 alumni.
