Leonard Steinberg, Baron Steinberg (born 1936, Belfast) is a British life peer, businessman and multi-millionaire from Northern Ireland.[1]

Steinberg is the founder and Non-Executive Chairman of Stanley Leisure Ltd.[2] The business was founded in Belfast in 1958, but Steinberg moved to Liverpool in 1977 after he was shot by the Provisional Irish Republican Army and when he refused to pay protection money to either Republican or Loyalist paramilitaries. The Provisional IRA in admitting responsibility for the series of attacks described their targets as business elements who formed part of the base “of the British war machine”.[3][4][5]

Since 2005 Stanley Leisure has seen changes of ownership, with William Hill buying the bookmaking operations and the Genting Group buying the casino operation.[3] Steinberg sold a large number of his shares in 2004, but retained 11.3% of the company's stake.[6]

Lord Steinberg, who now lives in Hale, was made a Tory life peer in 2004,[6] and has made contributions to the Conservative Party.[7]

His personal fortune was estimate as being some £108 million in 2005.[6] He is also the Founder and Chairman of Trustees of the Steinberg Family Charitable Trust.[2]
