"Swagga Like Us" is a Grammy Award-winning song by rappers T.I. and Jay-Z, released as the first single from Jay-Z's eleventh studio album The Blueprint³ and the second single from T.I.'s sixth studio album, Paper Trail. It was released on September 6, 2008.[1] The song features Kanye West and Lil Wayne both using the auto-tune in their verses. The song's instrumental is based on a mixed sample of M.I.A. singing "no one on the corner has swagga like us", from her hit single "Paper Planes".[2][3]

The song was nominated for the Grammy for Best Rap Song and won the Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group at the 51st Grammy Awards.[4][5] This song was number 22 on Rolling Stone's list of the 100 Best Songs of 2008.[6] T.I., Kanye West, Jay-Z, Lil Wayne, and M.I.A. performed this song at the 2009 Grammy Awards, while M.I.A. was 9 months pregnant.

Remixes

A "sequel" to the track (titled "Swagger Like Us Pt. 2") has been recorded and will be featured on Jay-Z's The Blueprint³. It will feature Young Jeezy, André 3000, and Nas.[7]

Jim Jones, Pusha T, Freeway, & Fabolous made a remix together. Clipse made a remix on their mixtape Road To Till The Casket Drops. [8]Diddy has made a freestyle featuring Cassie on "Swagga Like Us", and renamed it "Swagger Like Puff". Trey Songz has also made one under the name of "Swagga Like Songz". Also, Young Hot Rod and Tony Yayo, G-Unit Records Recording Artists, Drake, Freeway, Twista, and Flo Rida made their own freestyles to the song. Tony Yayo did his version titled "Swagga Like Us Freestyle".[9] On November 10, 2008, Chamillionaire released his own freestyle on the song for his mixtape Mixtape Messiah 5. Rick Ross has also done his own freestyle remix, stated to be retaliating for being left out on the song.

Jim Jones has recorded "Jackin' Swagger from Us" with Twista, Noe and Lil Wayne which takes shots at T.I. and Jay-Z for allegedly stealing their styles. The song will be a bonus track on his album Pray IV Reign.[10][11]

Music video

According to T.I. a music video will be shot whenever all artists are available.[12]

"I hope we can pull that off," Tip said of a video featuring song co-stars Jay-Z, Kanye West and Lil Wayne. "That was the definite intentions initially. We have to see when everybody is all available. I'm available whenever they are." ...

Kanye West also confirmed that a video would be shot in the near future. [13]

"We’re just about to shoot a video for that actually – it should be fun. I think it all comes down to mutual respect for everyone that’s on that track. At this point everyone has paid their dues and held that number one spot at some time or another."

Lil Wayne is currently working on Rebirth, Kanye West already released his 4th studio album 808s and Heartbreak, T.I. has just released his album Paper Trail, and Jay-Z is finishing up The Blueprint³.

Charts

In the U.S. the song made a "Hot Shot Debut" [citation needed] on the Billboard Hot 100 at number 5 with 139,000 digital downloads in it's first week making it both Jay-Z's and T.I.'s highest debut on the chart [14]. It's also Jay-Z's third top five hit, as well as T.I.'s fourth on the chart. The song made a Hot Shot Debut on the Pop 100 at number 19 on the week of September 18, 2008. On September 21, 2008, the song entered the UK Singles Chart at number 33[15] on downloads alone. On the Canadian Hot 100 chart, it debuted at number 19 also on digital downloads.[citation needed]
