Template talk:Did you know
This page is for nominations to appear in the "Did you know" section on the Main Page.
Instructions
Using a DYK suggestion string (see below examples), list new suggestions in the candidate entries section below under the date the article was created or the expansion began (not the date you submit it here), with the newest dates at the top. Any user may nominate a DYK suggestion; self-nominations are permitted and encouraged. Thanks for participating and please remember to check back for comments on your nomination.
DYK criteria
Sample DYK suggestion strings
Please use one of the strings below to post your DYK nomination, using the "author" and "nominator" fields to identify the users who should receive credit for their contributions if the hook is featured on the main page.
- Nom without image:
{{subst:NewDYKnom | article= | hook=... that ? | author= }}
- Nom with image:
{{subst:NewDYKnom | article= | hook=... that ? | author= | image= | caption= }}
- To include more than one new or expanded article in a single hook:
|article2=
|article3=
|article4=
| (etc) - To include more than one author:
|author2=
|author3=
| (etc) - To include alternate hooks:
|ALT1=
|ALT2=
| (etc) - To add a comment:
|comment=
- To add the article you reviewed:
|reviewed=
- To include more than one new or expanded article in a single hook:
Do not wikilink the article title, or the author username field; the template will wikilink them automatically. Do wikilink the article title in the hook field, however.
Do not add a section heading if you are using the template; the template will add one for you.
Do not include a signature (~~~~) after the template.
Do not use non-free images in your hook suggestion.
An example of how to use the template is given below:
{{subst:DYKsug | article = Example | hook = ... that this [[article]] is an '''[[example]]''' ''(pictured)''? | creator = Jimbo Wales | expander = | nominator = | image = Example.png | comment = }}
- Note that you should only use one of the above templates for the original hook. If you want to suggest a second, alternative hook for the same article submission, just type it in manually. The above templates output useful code for each submission and if you employ them for alternative hooks, you will mess up the page formatting.
- When saving your suggestion, please add the name of the suggested article to your edit summary.
- Please check back for comments on your nomination. Responding to reasonable objections will help ensure that your article is listed.
- If you nominate someone else's article, you can use {{subst:DYKNom}} to notify them. Usage: {{subst:DYKNom|Article name|December 2}} Thanks, ~~~~
Symbols
If you want to confirm that an article is ready to be placed on a later update, or that there is an issue with the article or hook, you may use the following symbols (optional) to point the issues out:
Symbol | Code | DYK Ready? | Description |
---|---|---|---|
{{subst:DYKtick}} | Yes | No problems, ready for DYK | |
{{subst:DYKtickAGF}} | Yes | Article is ready for DYK, with a foreign-language or offline hook reference accepted in good faith | |
{{subst:DYK?}} | Query | DYK eligibility requires that an issue be addressed. Notify nominator with {{subst:DYKproblem|Article}}
| |
{{subst:DYK?no}} | Maybe | DYK eligibility requires additional work. Notify nominator with {{subst:DYKproblem|Article}}
| |
{{subst:DYKno}} | No | Article is either completely ineligible, or else requires considerable work before becoming eligible |
Please consider using {{subst:DYKproblem}} on the user's talk page, in case they do not notice if there is an issue.
Backlogged?
This page often seems to be backlogged. If the DYK template has not been updated for substantially more than 6 hours, it may be useful to attract the attention of one of the administrators who regularly updates the template. See the page Wikipedia:Did you know/Admins for a list of administrators who have volunteered to help with this project.
Where is my hook?
If you can't find the hook you submitted to this page, in most cases it means your article has been approved and is in the queue for display on the main page. You can check whether your hook has been moved to the queue by reviewing the queue listings.
If your hook is not in the queue or already on the main page, it has probably been deleted. Deletion occurs if the hook is more than about eight days old and has unresolved issues for which any discussion has gone stale. If you think your hook has been unfairly deleted, you can query its deletion on the discussion page, but as a general rule deleted hooks will only be restored in exceptional circumstances.

- I removed the word "while" so the sentence would make sense. Art LaPella (talk) 06:52, 12 February 2009 (UTC)
- No, now it doesn't make sense. He was mainly known for being a judge rather than a barrister, and both judges and barristers have rooms referred to as "chambers". As such it is important to clarify that it was while he was a barrister rather than while he was a judge to avoid confusion on the part of the reader. Ironholds (talk) 17:41, 12 February 2009 (UTC)
- Sorry, I didn't mean to change the meaning, but I misinterpreted the hook, and I think others could get as lost as I did. You meant "while a barrister" to modify "Henry McCardie", but I misinterpreted "while" as introducing a major subordinate clause "a barrister, Henry McCardie, often worked so late into the night that his chambers were nicknamed 'the lighthouse'". Then I got lost because there was no way to attach that imaginary clause to the rest of the sentence; or in non-grammatical terms, while he worked so late that his chambers were nicknamed "the lighthouse", what else happened while that was happening? So how about "Henry McCardie, as a barrister, ..."? Art LaPella (talk) 03:05, 13 February 2009 (UTC)

- I am skeptical that this needs to be an article in the first place, but if it is considered worthy of a DYK, it needs a better hook. Looking at the New York Times items that are the basis for this hook, the Times doesn't appear to be saying anything like "Obama has accomplished as much in his first 100 days as Roosevelt, Kennedy, Johnson, or Nixon"; rather, it appears to be saying something more like "Obama will have a first 100 days, and here is what happened during Roosevelt, Kennedy, Johnson, and Nixon's first 100 days". In other words, the "comparison" described in the hook is trivial. --Metropolitan90 (talk) 03:59, 13 February 2009 (UTC)

- I think the word "attended" suggests that Abbott attended Lincoln as a physician, but neither of the sources supports that idea. The DCB says: "Among the select group who stood vigil over the dying President Abraham Lincoln in April 1865, he was later presented by Mary Todd Lincoln with a shawl her husband had worn to his first inauguration." - I suggest rewording the hook. Length and history verified. Awadewit (talk) 12:26, 11 February 2009 (UTC)
- This story was interesting enough to get me poking around this morning, and there do seem to be at least a few references that refer to Abbott as serving a medical function at Lincoln's deathbed. In the book Lincoln in The Times: The Life of Abraham Lincoln, as Originally Reported in the New York Times by David Herbert Donald and Harold Holzer (Macmillan 2005), ISBN 9780312349196, there is mention on p.252 (Google Books excerpt here) that Abbott was the one keeping the "minutes" (his pulse, respiration, etc.) I'll add this cite to the page unless others think it's not germane.--Arxiloxos (talk) 15:14, 11 February 2009 (UTC)

- Length and reference verified (reference barely passes WP:RS since it's expressing an opinion rather than fact) but 1) this is not a compelling hook and 2) it mis-states the source. The source did not describe the bracelet as a "bondage accessory". It described it as "look[ing] a bit like a bondage accessory". There's a difference. You have some characters to play with in the hook (currently 121) but I'm wondering if there isn't something more interesting that could be said about the subject? - I don't get this hook. It seems to be trying to attract attention by its link with Barack Obama only, something which it seems everybody is doing. Don't get me wrong, if it were eye-catching or surprising it would be a good hook but it seems to be using Obama as some sort of endorsement. Is there anything about this article that doesn't involve Barack Obama or at least involves him doing something more exciting? --➨♀♂Candlewicke ST # :) 14:01, 13 February 2009 (UTC)

- I'm delighted to see Cappy get a better article. I'd suggest adding the word "basketball" somewhere, and to make up for this you could delete "trademark" since you're already mentioning that he was known for the weave, and condense in a few other places. So how about:

- Comment It's a substantial new article, and well cited, but surely the title should be Economy of Han Dynasty China or Economy of China under the Han Dynasty? - Please do not add any more red links, it's giving me a headache just looking at them! Also, you still don't understand the meaning of the Han "dynasty"; "Han" is not the name of some sort of royal family (which is the Liu 劉 family in this case). "Han" is in reference to a specific political and geographic entity, the Kingdom of Han in Hanzhong (modern Shaanxi), which the Han Dynasty's name is derived from. Therefore, "Han Dynasty" and "Han Empire" are virtually synonymous terms. Case closed; there is no need to move this article and in fact, it will not be moved, since it conforms with other articles such as Economy of the Song Dynasty and Economy of the Ming Dynasty.--Pericles of AthensTalk 08:03, 11 February 2009 (UTC)
- PericlesofAthens, I am Chinese. And the name of the country and the regime, in the place known as China, was "Han", "Song" and "Ming" in different eras, not "Han Dynasty", "Song Dynasty" and "Ming Dynasty". IMO, Economy of the Song Dynasty and Economy of the Ming Dynasty should be moved, too. Anyway, please consider my hook (ALT2). - Article has only been expanded 4x, 3.8x if block quote not counted. Shubinator (talk) 18:20, 7 February 2009 (UTC)
- I counted some 260 words in the original and some 1800 in the lastest version (incl. quote). It is entirely possible that I did not count so correctly, and I think my high count includes the references and templates. When I did the math at nomination time, I though I was at something like 4.5 times the earlier version, but hoped that the significant increase in references, from 2 to 18, would make up for that. If it doesn't, though luck. And I thought the hook was really cool. Thanks anyway. Drmies (talk) 18:31, 7 February 2009 (UTC)
- The prosesize tool gives 4631/1163 = 4.0x. It doesn't count the block quote at the end, but it does count the poem near the start (which maybe should be a block quote). Some exceptional 4x expansions have been approved. This article is nice, but it has a few run-on sentences and the climbing section could have a more encyclopedic tone. I'll leave the final decision to the other DYK editors. Shubinator (talk) 19:09, 7 February 2009 (UTC)
- I've reorganized one sentence that you might have thought was a run-on, and added a word or two (so maybe I'm at 4.1 now;)). If there are any run-ons I'd love to know (since I teach upper-level advanced grammar at a state university I'm interested in this stuff). I've also reorganized the 'people' section a bit. As for the climbing section, it's pretty heavily footnoted and I wouldn't consider it not encyclopedic enough, but that's a matter of taste/judgment perhaps. If it's good enough, great; if not, I'm moving on to the next stack in the archipelago. Well, I'll do that anyway. Drmies (talk) 22:13, 7 February 2009 (UTC)
- I didn't find any run-on sentences, but I have often complained that editors on this page use "run-on" to mean "convoluted". Art LaPella (talk) 04:31, 8 February 2009 (UTC)
- I did. The article was so decorated with semicolons and other advanced level punctuation and conjunctive devices that no product of the American education system could have understood it. I had to do some aggresive pruning and reorganization, and I'm now confident that we the simple people can comprehend something about how this is an island with birds on it. The little engine that could and Curious George would be proud Drmies. It's like a gift from Sinterklaas. ChildofMidnight (talk) 00:09, 9 February 2009 (UTC)
- Once again, "run-on" doesn't mean "convoluted". "... no product of the American education system could have understood it" means "convoluted". "run-on" is described in the run-on sentence article, and you can't communicate with a grammar teacher when confusing the two. Art LaPella (talk) 06:17, 9 February 2009 (UTC)
- I bow to your immensity, oh CoM... It IS indeed an island with birds on it! And they are tasty too: reportedly they ate porridge with penguin there. Oh, after CoM's expansions the article got a bit longer, with a better lead. nudge nudge... Drmies (talk) 00:58, 9 February 2009 (UTC)
- Expansion, history, reference good. The images in the article should be sorted out though...they're a mess now. I like the infobox. Shubinator (talk) 01:12, 9 February 2009 (UTC)
- Ha, I wish I could take credit for the box. Well, I could, but I'd be lying. What is the problem with the images? I really don't know what to do, and to my untrained eye they look fine. Thanks, Drmies (talk) 01:46, 9 February 2009 (UTC)
- I've moved some of the images around. It's still a bit crowded; probably best to take out a picture or two. Shubinator (talk) 07:03, 10 February 2009 (UTC)

- Church of the East is a disambiguation page. That is, if a reader clicks it, he will have to guess which link will lead to a description of this church. I used Church of East to be NPOV. Anyway I've edited Article Church of the East and put as first meaning the Church before the splittings (that happened in 1553, 1681, 1830, 1968) so the problem is solved. - Not necessarily. In parts perhaps, although that's more the table featuring her side projects that the opening prose counted for DYK or the article in general. There is one link to her website which actually includes a video of the not particularly controversial performance mentioned. The discography is equally heavily (if not more heavily) reliant on newspaper articles such as this and this and this, television shows such as this and this entry on the website of Snow Patrol who have absolutely no reason to be mentioning someone like Hannigan as they are not associated with her and are much more well-known than her. I also don't know what you mean about the personal blog in MySpace as I cannot recall using one. The link you've provided me with just leads to the general site which only features in the discography as an external link – I presume this wouldn't be a problem with musicians especially considering it has its own template. This is a very unexpected early review which seems to have been done in haste – I also was not informed of the problem on my talk page. - No, sorry, that hook is just too misleading. Try a hook that has something to do with the article's content, please! Gatoclass (talk) 14:10, 9 February 2009 (UTC)
- ALT: ... that while hedgehogs are eaten in some cultures, Hedgehog Pie is not a savory pie made with the meat from the spiny mammals, but a 1970s electric folk group from Newcastle-Upon-Tyne? Wizardman 14:53, 11 February 2009 (UTC)
- Should probably be for April Fools Day and say "Hedgehog Pie is made of 1970s electric folk musicians?"--King Bedford I Seek his grace 14:57, 11 February 2009 (UTC)
- Heh, not bad, I guess we could use that or something like it for an April Fool's Day hook. Gatoclass (talk) 10:37, 12 February 2009 (UTC)

- Need sth less negative than her banishment from a golf club for this BLP article. --74.14.20.60 (talk) 22:07, 4 February 2009 (UTC)
- It is referenced. What is "sth"? An alternate hook was that she reportedly agreed to not run for re-election in order to be named (or the Governor named her and stated that she would not run for re-election). Chergles (talk) 15:52, 5 February 2009 (UTC)
- "sth"="something". Art LaPella (talk) 20:43, 5 February 2009 (UTC)
- So what if it's referenced? The issue is not verifiability. The problem is an unnecessary focus on the negative. --74.14.21.166 (talk) 08:24, 7 February 2009 (UTC)
- It's not really negative. A 3rd possible hook is ALT1: "... that J. Bonnie Newman, who was selected by the Governor of New Hampshire for a vacant Senate seat, was once the congressional aide of the outgoing Senator?" Chergles (talk) 17:20, 7 February 2009 (UTC)
- On second thoughts, JBN probably takes this ban as a badge of honor.... Never mind. --74.13.125.218 (talk) 07:03, 11 February 2009 (UTC)
- This is a negative on the club, not her. Daniel Case (talk) 16:16, 11 February 2009 (UTC)

- As Gregg has just quit as Commerce Secretary, he probably won't need a replacement in the Senate anymore. A new hook is recommended. --PFHLai (talk) 22:14, 12 February 2009 (UTC)

- Why focus on the young/immature and uneducated? --74.13.129.109 (talk) 16:25, 3 February 2009 (UTC)
- The focus is clearly on the educated. The reality has to be faced. - Chandan Guha (talk) 02:03, 5 February 2009 (UTC)
- "The reality has to be faced." The purpose of DYK is not to face reality, but to highlight interesting things in new contents of the encyclopedia. Why would such (sad) reality be considered interesting enough to make a DYK hook? It's just an inconvenience to travel a long way to school. This is hardly an aspect of Jangipara one would want to highlight and post on the main page. --74.13.125.218 (talk) 06:47, 11 February 2009 (UTC)
- I reverted "college degree" back to "degree college" because Jangipara is an area, not an individual who could have a college degree. However, "degree college" sounds unfamiliar, at least in U.S. English, so it might be changed to "college that grants degrees" or just "college". Art LaPella (talk) 19:02, 11 February 2009 (UTC)
- Okay, deleted "degree" - Chandan Guha (talk) 01:05, 12 February 2009 (UTC)

- Why not have a paragraph in the article as well as a DYK hook about Antpur? We have a nice pic available (right). --74.13.125.218 (talk) 06:59, 11 February 2009 (UTC)
- Article looks fine now... Cheers. Imperat§ r(Talk) 14:12, 13 February 2009 (UTC)

Articles created/expanded for St. Valentine's Day 2009 (February 14)
- Articles & hooks about love, love songs, romance novels and their authors, chick flicks, chocolate and related cocoa products and their producers, neurochemistry of love, ... etc. are encouraged. Articles about any food (such as mushrooms!) believed to be aphrodisiacs, and hooks about cardiac surgery with a photo of a human heart, ... would be good as well. Biographies of people whose name is "Valentino", "Hart", "Love"... or sounds like "Cupid" might be okay, too. --PFHLai (talk)
