"You must be the famous Balto, the trouble dog." - Stella, Balto III: Wings of Change

Balto is the main protagonist of the film series. He is based on the real dog of the same name. Balto was voiced by Kevin Bacon in the first installment and Maurice LaMarche in Balto 2 and 3.

Physical appearance

"Uh... big paws kinda run in my family. Well... one side of my family." - Balto to Jenna, Balto

Balto has unusually big paws, due to being half-wolf, that he says runs in one side of his family. He also has a long bushy tail. Balto has light and dark brown fur. Balto's eyes are yellow and red. Even though Balto is half wolf and half dog, he bears greater resemblance to a wolf, being teased about it for most of his life.

Note(s): In Balto II: Wolf Quest, Balto's eyes were a very light shade of yellow, but in Balto III: Wings of Change, his eyes are a darker shade of yellow. At night, Balto's brown fur appears gray.

Age

Even though Balto's age in human or dog years is never mentioned, it was implied that in the 1st film, Balto is a young adult. Balto is currently in late 30's or early 40's [citation needed].

Personality

"Not a dog. Not a wolf. All he knows is what he's not. If only he could see what he is." - Boris, Balto

Despite his heritage and appearance, Balto always desired to be more like a dog than a wolf. He is deeply in love with Jenna. Balto has a lot of wisdom, patience, and perseverance that usually helps him save the day. He also cares a lot for others, and is willing to risk his own life to save someone else. Balto is also very humble [1]. Balto was very insecure about being half-wolf (a trait Aleu later developed) but after the events the first movie learned pride for his species (although he says being half-wolf can be painful, and that other dogs still make fun of him, and he was ashamed when he admitted to Aleu that he was half-wolf). By the 3rd film, all teasing stops and he is considered the hero of Nome. Balto also loves sled-dog racing, and would become very excited when watching one.

He was also once worried that he would let his son down, but got some advice from Jenna. He also developed a fascination about flying in the 3rd film. This dream came true when Duke took Balto for a ride in his new plane, which he named the Balto Flyer in his honor out of gratitude for having saved his life. Balto often acts as a peacemaker breaking up fights and trying to prevent them by saying "we don't want any trouble", though this usually doesn't work. He often avoids using force as much as possible, using his intellect to get out of tight spots.

Balto also has a soft spot for puppies, and was highly overprotective of Aleu, eventually having to let her go. Balto, despite his traumatic childhood, and being teased for several years, has a sense of humor. In the 1st film, Balto would often smile when around Boris, and would enjoy seeing Muk and Luk bother Boris. In the 2nd film however, Balto has a more cynical personality. By the 3rd film, Balto starts to laugh more often, as well as starting to use sarcasm. When in search-and-rescue mode however, Balto's personality becomes dead serious.

Balto also knows most of the woods and mountain area surrounding Nome by heart. Balto is a fairly honest dog, continually recommending that Boris tell the truth to Stella throughout the 3rd film. But lied about Aleu's heritage in the 2nd film, to protect her feelings and hide his shame, which she found out the truth shortly after and ran away.

Powers and abilities

"We need the fastest dog in Nome...My dad", The mail team (referring to Balto), Balto III: Wings of Change

As a wolf-dog mix Balto possesses strength, speed and agility greater than that of a domestic dog. Balto has a highly developed sense of smell. He was also capable of hearing the bush plane when no other dog could, suggesting he has heightened sense of hearing. Balto is highly intelligent, often coming up with plans and tactics to help aid others. In the 2nd installment, he had recurring dreams that turned out to be a vision of things to come, hinting that Balto may have the gift of prophecy.

Balto is capable of holding his own against other dogs and wolves; but when he faces other creatures of the forest (bears, moose, etc.), he usually has to outsmart them, or flee from them due to their greater size.

Biography

"Being different can be painful, no one knows that better than me.", Balto to Boris, Balto II: Wolf Quest

Balto was separated from his mother at an early age and wandered around for days until he was adopted by Boris, a snow goose [2].

Balto was then an outcast, a creature that every one hated. Balto then developed a crush on Jenna. However, the town was being under siege from a outbreak of Diphtheria, and Balo's rival Steele was chosen to lead the sled dogs with the medicine. Steele soon got them lost and stuck in a blizzard. Balto later went to rescue the team of sled dogs from a blizzard and got the medicine to the village in time to save the town. Balto became famous and became Jenna's mate. Although some dogs still had their doubts [3].

A few years later Jenna gave birth to a litter of pups who were all adopted except for one named Aleu. When Aleu discovers that she's half wolf she runs away. When Balto goes to find her he rescues her from a bear and they discover that Aleu's destiny is to lead a pack of wolves across the sea to where they can find food. Aleu later left with the wolf pack while Balto stayed behind with Jenna.

Another few years later, Balto is officially retired from sledding, but later helps his son Kodi (from the same litter of pups from earlier) keep his job as mail-dog. Balto later rescued a pilot and Boris from a bad plane accident and was rewarded with a trip in an airplane.

In-universe information
SpeciesCanine
GenderFemale
FamilyBalto (mate), Rosy (owner), Aleu (daughter), Kodi (son), Dingo (son), various other puppies

Jenna is Balto's mate and mother of Kodi, Dingo, and Aleu. She was voiced by Bridget Fonda in the first movie, and Jodi Benson in the two sequels.

Physical appearance

Jenna has dark red fur, which most of her puppies received, and usually wears a red scarf around her neck.

Personality

"Balto, each of our children have their own lives to live. It is our job to love them, and then let go...", Balto II: Wolf Quest

Jenna has loved Balto since they met. When Balto left to save Nome, she, Muk, Luk, and Boris followed him briefly. They saved Balto from a wild bear, and just before they left, Jenna gave Balto her scarf. When Balto returned with medicine, they officially became a couple.

Jenna usually stays behind on Balto's adventures, despite asking to help. Jenna also cared a lot for her puppies, but was willing to find them homes after eight weeks. Jenna also disliked Steele for his remarks about Balto, and his arrogant attitude.

Jenna is very kind and gentle, and is very protective not only of her pups, but also for her owner, Rosy. When Rosy's hat fell off her hat and into the path of Steele and his team, as Rosy tried to reach for it, Jenna grabbed her coat from behind; Balto later got the hat.

Jenna is also very cunning (tricking Steele into burning his tail). She also has fight instincts in her; she helped fight off a wild bear that was menacing Balto and the others, although she ended up hurt.

Biography

"Steele's lying. Balto's alive. And he's coming home!" - Jenna, Balto

Jenna was sold to Rosy when she was eight weeks old [4]. Jenna first met Balto when he saved her master's hat, since then she had a crush on Balto, which was returned. They became mates at the end of the first movie and she gave birth to a litter of pups.

When Aleu ran away Jenna attempted to follow Balto but he insisted that she stay behind, and that it was a father/daughter thing. When Balto was chosen to help Kodi save his job a few years later, she encouraged Balto to help. Balto was worried that he would let the team down, and that he wasn't a hero, Jenna reassured him that if he could save a whole town, then he could help save Kodi's job. After Balto left to save Duke by himself, Jenna scolded Kodi for letting Balto go by himself and convinced Kodi to follow him.

Nickname"Uncle Boris", "Mr. Optimisim"

FamilyBalto (adoptive son), Stella (girlfriend)

"Boris Goosinov is no spring chicken! Is no spring penguin either!" - Boris to Balto, Balto (film)

Boris Goosinov (called Uncle Boris by Muk, Luk and sometimes Balto) is a Russian snow goose who raised Balto from a pup. He speaks with a heavy Russian accent (but in the close captions for Balto II: Wolf Quest, it says that Boris has a Yiddish accent). He is voiced by Bob Hoskins in the first film, and Charles Fleischer in the direct-to-video movies. In the 1st film, Boris mentions his last name is "Goosinov".

Personality

"I hate heights", Boris to Stella, Balto III: Wings of Change

Boris in the first film, had great faith in Balto when he left to save Nome, telling him: "a dog cannot make the journey alone, but maybe a wolf can". Boris also was afraid of the local bully Steele. In the 2nd film, Boris told Balto that even though he didn't want to believe it, Aleu would be half-wolf. Boris was also revealed to be superstitious and believed in mystical stuff. In the 3rd film he developed a crush on a goose named Stella, but lied about flying with her to hide his fear of heights.

Biography

"I've known Boris since I was a pup. Well, he may be a pain in the butt, but he's... well, he's the dad I never had." - Balto to Stella, Balto III: Wings of Change

Boris was born in Russia. It is unknown how he ended up in Nome since he has a fear of heights. Sometime in Boris' life he discovered a young Balto and raised him as his adoptive son. When Balto left to save Nome several years later, Boris waited for Balto's return. Boris became the wolf pups babysitter in the 2nd film. When Balto left to find Aleu, Boris once again waited for Balto's return with Jenna.

Two years later, he fell in love with a migrating snow goose named Stella. After Stella became mad with him, she chased him onto a plane which then crashed. Balto, Stella, Muk, and Luk eventually found Boris in the wreck-site and carried him back to Nome. Boris then made up with Stella and they became a couple.

Muk and Luk

In-universe information
SpeciesPolar bear
GenderMale
FamilyEach other (brothers)

"They're kinda cute, if you have a thing for polar bears.", Stella to Balto, Balto III: Wings of Change

Muk and Luk, two polar bears who usually like to play pranks on Boris. They are presumably brothers. Most about Muk and Luk's origin is unknown. Muk and Luk live in the forests of Alaska. They are often seen visiting Boris and Balto.

Personality

The two claim that they can't swim, but they swam to save Balto from drowning. The mail team once described them as "two mentally challenged polar bears". During when Aleu was still living with Balto, they would come over daily to play. The two polar usually act like children despite their age. Muk usually does all the talking, while Luk makes incoherent sounds.

They usually scare easily and often stay behind on Balto's adventures, along with Boris and Jenna. They only once showed bravery by diving into a semi-frozen lake to save Balto from drowning/freezing.

Aleu

In-universe information
SpeciesWolf/Canine
GenderFemale
FamilyKodi (brother), Dingo (brother), several unknown brothers and sisters, Balto (father), Jenna (mother), Aniu (grandmother)

"I'm not a wild animal.", Aleu to Balto, Balto II: Wolf Quest

Aleu, is a wolf-dog hybrid like Balto. Aleu appeared in the 2nd film and made a cameo as a puppy during the song "You Don't Have To Be A Hero" in the 3rd film. Her name might come from the Aleutian Islands, off the coast of Alaska.

Personality

She is very stubborn and brave, prone to not listening to her father. She was also disdainful of her wolf blood (though she eventually learns to accept it). Although she never realized it, Aleu acted more like a wolf than a dog; she had a reputation for being aggressive and had a high prey drive and stronger predatory instincts than a common dog.

Physical appearance

Aleu has the physical appearance of Balto and Jenna, plus that of a wolf. She has light brown fur with a gray underbelly.

Biography

Aleu was born bearing great resemblance to a wolf more so than her siblings, and was never adopted because of this. Aleu spent a year with Balto and Jenna before discovering her heritage and running away. Balto soon followed her and they discovered a pack of wolves that needed help crossing the frozen sea in pursuit of the Caribou. It was originally believed that Balto was the chosen one, but it was Aleu who was true chosen one. Aleu helped the pack cross the ice path, and was never seen again.

Kodi

In-universe information
SpeciesCanine
GenderMale
FamilyAleu (sister), Dingo (brother), several unknown brothers and sisters, Balto (father), Jenna (mother), Aniu (grandmother)

Kodiak (Kodi) was seen in the 3rd film where he had a job as a mail-dog. Kodi also had a cameo in Wolf Quest as one of the puppies that are adopted. His name may come from the Kodiak Islands, off the coast of Alaska.

Personality

Kodi showed to a similar personality as Balto. Kodi has strong sense of duty and responsibility, but has his faults (such as having Balto go into the woods by himself because Kodi wanted to keep his job).

Minor characters and allies

An elderly wolf he was the leader of a wolf-pack. Nava appeared in the 2nd film. Nava's pack was going to cross a frozen ocean when he was attacked by Niju. He was rescued by Balto and Aleu. Nava later stayed behind to find a fearful Niju who had swam to shore and ran away.

Stella

A beautiful snow goose that Boris had a crush on in the 3rd film. Stella was migrating when she met Boris. Boris instantly fell in love with her but, lied about his fear of heights. She later heard him talking to Balto about how he lied to her. Enraged, she forced Boris into Duke's plane. Duke's plane, later, crashed with Boris in it. Stella, along Balto and Muk and Luk, set out to find Boris. Stella later confronted Boris about why he lied to her, and he admitted his fear of heights.

Duke

Duke was pilot who appeared in Balto 3. Duke was flying in a race to determine which was faster, a dog or a plane. Duke along with a trapped Boris, were seriously hurt when Duke's plane crashed. Duke and Boris were later rescued by Balto, Kodi, and the mail sled team. Duke later built another plane called "The Balto Flyer" and took Balto flying.

Rosy

Rosy is an elderly lady and the previous owner of Jenna. In 1925 Rosy's hat flew away and Balto caught it. Later, Rosy caught Diphtheria, along with the rest of the town. Rosy was cured after Balto arrived with medicine. 70 years later, Rosy was a grandmother and told her grand-daughter about the story of Balto. She was voiced by Juliette Brewer as child, and played by Miriam Margolyes as an adult. Rosy was mentioned several times in the second film, but was an off-screen character. Rosy had a cameo during the opening credits in the 3rd film.

Aniu

Balto's apparently deceased mother. Balto was separated from Aniu at an early age and never saw her again. Aniu's spirit was seen in 1st and 2nd movies. She is Balto's spirit guide.

Muru

Aleu's spirit guide. He appears as a mouse in the 2nd movie, and sings the song, "Who Are You"

Villains

Steele

Steele
File:Steele.jpg
Steele.
First appearanceBalto (film)
Portrayed byJim Cummings
In-universe information
SpeciesCanine
GenderMale

Steele was an evil dog that appeared in the first film. He was voiced by Jim Cummings.

Personality

"Go ahead, wolf-dog! You'll never get home! I'll make sure of that.", Steele shouting after Balto and the sled-dog team, Balto

Steele was Balto's rival, he often competed with Balto for Jenna's affection. Steele was really arrogant and didn't mind using sabotage to get what he wanted. Steele's hatred for Balto was made of pure jealously. He is also prone to anger. This proved to be his undoing as his anger and jealously prevented him from doing what was right.

Powers and abilities

Despite remarks by his musher and others that Steele might be "losing his edge," Steele still has remarkable strength and speed close to that of Balto's. He was able to survive a fall down a mountain, knocked down a dead tree, and jumped through door on Balto and Jenna pinning them down.

Biography

Steele was the lead dog in the sled dog races, he first encountered Balto after he beat him at the race while rescuing Rosy's hat. Out of jealously, Steele insulted and harassed Balto for being half-wolf. When the town became sick, there was a relay race to choose who would be on the sled dog team that would carry the medicine. Balto was the rightful winner of the race, but Steele stomped on his paw as a musher reached to pet him, making them believe him to be aggressive, thus disqualifying Balto.

Steele became the leader of the sled team to get the medicine to Nome, before they were lost in a blizzard and Balto came to their rescue. Despite Balto's pleas for Steele to let him help them back to Nome, Steele attacked Balto, making obvious his intentions to kill him. Balto refused to fight back but Steele didn't pay attention to his surroundings and ended up falling off a cliff.

Steele made his way back to village and lied that Balto was dead, believing Balto wouldn't come back as Steele had messed up his trail. Balto later showed up and revealed him as a scoundrel, resulting in Dixie, who had been trying to earn his affections several times, slapping him in the face. Steele was never seen again after that. Ironically, had he allowed Balto to lead him back with the rest, he would've shared in his glory, what he truly wanted.

Niju, Nuk, Yak, and Sumac

Niju was an evil wolf who appeared in the second film. Niju planned to take over the wolf pack with help of his followers, Nuk, Yak, and Sumac. Niju tried to kill the pack leader Nava, but was stopped by Balto and Aleu. He was later left behind while to rest of the pack crossed the frozen sea (including Nuk, Yak, and Sumac). After realizing that he would be left alone, Niju ran off into the woods out of fear. The 3 henchmen later helped Aleu climb onto the iceberg.

Hunter

The hunter had a cameo in the second film where he was trying to hunt Aleu (thinking she was a wolf), before he was stopped by Balto, Boris, and Muk and Luk. Whether he truly qualifies as a villain is open to debate, since even Balto acknowledged he was hunting for his living.

Character quotes

Balto

  • Aw, come on. What's the worst that can happen?
  • [Muk is calling for Boris] How sweet. "Uncle Boris."
  • Hi. Look, uh -- just a shot in the dark, but I was wondering if, uh, I don't know, maybe you'd like to go chase a few sticks by moonlight, heh, heh… [Sighs]
  • I have the keys to the city. [Disables hinge and pushes open door]
  • Uh... big paws kinda run in my family. Well... one side of my family.
  • Boris, did you ever think, maybe you're the reason the other geese fly south?
  • Since when do you need a pedigree to help people?

Boris

  • Balto, get your slobbering mouth off me!
  • Boris Goosinov is no spring chicken! [gets buried by snow] Is no spring penguin either!
  • I'm a delicate country bird. I hate going into town.
  • Why do I let you talk me into these things?
  • You are putting me down now, Mr. Golden Retriever?
  • When will you learn to stay on the sidelines?!
  • Not a dog. Not a wolf. All he knows is what he's not. If only he could see what he is.
  • Oh, bears... fellas... HEY, IDIOT BALLS OF FLUFF!
  • He has point, bears. You are not drowning because, if you will pause one moment, you will observe, perhaps, TIDE IS OUT!
  • What, more whimpering? Between you and Balto, it's like Dostoyevsky novel around here.
  • [To Balto] If only your feet were as fast as your mouth.
  • You will be frozen stiff by morning. When you are big frozen-stiff statue named Balto, don’t come running to me
  • [About Luk] Oh, no! I'm beginning to understand the bear!
  • Balto, I was so scared, I got people bumps!
  • Let me tell you something, Balto. A dog cannot make this journey alone. [He starts to walk away and then looks back] But… maybe a wolf can.
  • Not dog! Not wolf! You are a hero!

Jenna

  • [Acting flirtatious] Gee, Steele, I have to admit, your offer is very tempting… [She backs him towards the boiler] But these days I prefer my meat… cooked. [Steele realizes he is burning.]
  • You're lying. [louder] Steele's lying. Balto's alive. And he's coming home.
  • The sun… Ice caps… Balto.
  • [Jenna's bandana is in Steele's mouth] My bandana.

Steele

  • [To Jenna] You're a hundred percent right, Jenna. I-- I-- wasn't thinking about those children. The important thing here is to get the medicine through. And that's just what I'm gonna do. [Aside, to Balto] And when I get back, I'm gonna fold you five ways and leave you for a cat toy.
  • I've got a message for your mother. [starts howling]
  • Go ahead, wolf-dog! You'll never get home! I'll make sure of that.
  • …And I swam and I swam. It was freezing cold. And finally, I said 'Steele, you're just gonna have to gnaw your way to the surface.' So I --

[Balto howls outside] What?

Muk and Luk

  • [Translating Luk's whimper] Oh, the shame of the polar bear who fears the water. No wonder we are shunned by our fellow bear. Woe is us. [Pause] It's what he said. Kind of pathetic, really.
  • [While walking in the snow] I spy, with my little eye, something beginning with S!
  • Yes, well of course we were! We were in the water! We were moving! We got wet, didn't we… Luk! We were swimming!

Others

  • Sylvie: Say something about her new collar before she gets whiplash.
  • Dixie: [About Steele] He's going to save the entire town. He's positively mag... nesium!
  • Nikki: Oh great, things are not bad enough. Now we got wolves.
  • Nikki: Come on Balto, youse can make it.
  • Dixie: Steele, you are positively dis… posable!
  • Grandma Rosy: Thank you, Balto. I would have been lost without you.

Dialogue from Balto 1

Balto: Come on, we don't want to miss the finish.
Boris: Oh, that would be a tragedy.
[Balto runs off, throwing Boris into the snow]
Boris: I was being sarcastic.

Rosy: I love these rudders! I love this brushbow! I love this sled! Jenna, Jenna! You're lead dog!
Mother: Then you'll need this. [puts Musher's hat on Rosy's head]
Rosy: A real Musher's hat! Alright! We're a real sled team now! C'mon, mush! [Jenna pulls Rosy out of the shop]
Father: Mr. Johanson, the sled looks great. We're very grateful.
Mother: Rosy's grateful too.
Rosy: [runs back inside] Oh, thank you, thank you, thank you!
Mr. Johanson: [chuckles] So I gather.
Rosy: Watch this!
Father: I dunno, honey... I still think we should've gone with the dollhouse.
[Signal flare fires up in the air]
Rosy: It's the one-mile marker! C'mon, Jenna! Let's win this race! Mush!
Mother: Oh, I think she'll learn to like it.

Dixie: Looks like a close race today. It could be neck and... neck.
Sylvie: Say something about her new collar before she gets whiplash.
Jenna: Dixie, that's such a pretty collar! Is it new?
Dixie: What, this old thing? Yeah... you think Steele will notice?
Jenna: I think the only way Steele notices anyone is if they're wearing a mirror.

Steele: Didn't make the team… Bingo?
Boris: Don't listen to him. Don't look at him. Live a long life.
Balto: My name's Balto.
Boris: But you can call him "idiot."

Boris: What, this wolf business again? And what's wrong with being half-and-half, I ask you? Sometimes like crazy, I wish I was half eagle.
Balto: Why's that?
Boris: Better profile, for one thing. And no one eats you for another.

Luk: [starts whimpering, pointing to Boris]
Muk: What are you talking about? Of course he's glad to see us! He loves us... don't you?
Boris: [sighs] Okay, okay... Hey, boichiks! Let's play a game. Race you to the shore! One, two, three... GO!
[Muk and Luk excitedly take off, as Boris stays in place]
Boris: They win.

Balto: Dogs travel for miles just to be right here.
Jenna: I can't imagine why.
Balto: It's because you're looking at the bowl half empty. See these? [walks towards broken glass] These are the Polar Ice Caps.
Jenna: Balto... those are broken bottles. And they're not half empty, they're all empty.
Balto: [looks at the lamp from the grate] The sun...
Jenna: Balto...
Balto: And, to the north... [walks out of the way of the light, causing it to reflect off the bottles and create the illusion of the Northern Lights]
Jenna: The Northern Lights... oh, you're right, Balto. This is beautiful.
Balto: [looking at Jenna] Yeah... beautiful.

Dixie: What's with you, Jenna? Steele's a genuine hero! But do you even give him a sniff?
Sylvie: That's because Jenna is running with Balto. She was seen in the boiler room the other night with Balto. And they went in together, and they left together, and I heard it all from a very reliable source, and don't bother to deny it.
Jenna: Well, then I won't.
Sylvie: [Gasps] I'm speechless.

Balto: Wish me luck!
Boris: Luck? I don't wish you luck; I wish you SENSE! [Quietly] Good luck, Kiddo.

Steele: Okay... Nikki, Kaltag, Star. Gear up. We're heading out.
Balto: Wait a minute. Steele, I was the fastest dog out there.
Steele: You... were the fastest what? If you think any musher in their right mind would put you on their team... well, you're even more mixed up than I thought.
Jenna: Steele! It doesn't matter who's on the team! As long as the medicine gets through! Stop being such a glory hound!
Steele: You're a hundred percent right, Jenna. I-- I-- wasn't thinking about those children. The important thing here is to get the medicine through. And that's just what I'm gonna do. [Aside, to Balto] And when I get back, I'm gonna fold you five ways and leave you for a cat toy.

Musher: Let's take a look at our winner, here!
[Steele stomps down on Balto's foot, causing him to growl in pain, bearing his teeth]
Musher: We can't trust him. He's part wolf. He might turn on me. Nikki, Kaltag, Star!
[Steele smiles deviously at Balto, then walks away]
Jenna: Balto...
Balto: [depressed] Don't come to close to me, Jenna. I might turn on you.

[After Balto falls into the frozen river, Muk and Luk jump into the river after him]
Jenna: Luk! Muk!
Boris: They cannot swim!
Jenna: What?! Polar bears that can't swim?!

Nikki: Ooh... I hit my head on somethin'!
Kaltag: Yeah... my head!

Star: Balto?! [all the other dogs start talking about Balto]
Balto: What happened? Is everyone okay?
Steele: [solemnly] We're fine. Everything's okay.
Balto: Then, at least let me take the medicine back. They're getting worse.
Steele: [jumps between Balto and the sled] Touch that box... and I'll tear you apart.

Kaltag: He has the most endurance, the most fidelity, the most intelligence...
Star: They should build a statue of him!
Kaltag: [Star flinches, thinking he'll be hit again] You said it!
Star: I did?

Dialogue from Balto 2

Yak: Sorry, but you're not going nowhere!
Aleu: That's anywhere, flea-bag.
Balto: [out of the corner of his mouth] Aleu, I hardly think this is the time to be correcting his grammar.

Nava: I simply became one with the tree.
Balto: If I tried that, I'd get splinters.

Balto: I just don't want her to be different.
Boris: But she *is* different, and vive la difference!
Balto: Being different can be painful, no one knows that better than me. You know how some dogs still tease me about being half-wolf? Trust me, she [Aleu] is going to be all dog.
Aleu: [bursting out howling, Balto's mouth falls open] WHOOOO!!!!
Boris: I wouldn't count on it.

Balto: [to wolf pack] We don't have much time, so mush!!!
Wolf Pack: Huh???
Balto [realizing that a wolf pack wouldn't know what mush means] I mean. move out!!!

Aleu: I knew there was something wrong with me.
Balto: There is nothing wrong with you. You have a proud heritage.
Aleu: Oh, sure.
Balto: Your mother is a pure-bred husky.
'Aleu: Then what are you?
Balto: [lowers head in shame, whimpers] I-I'm the one who's part wolf.
Aleu: How could this happen?
Balto: Look. Aleu. My dad was a husky who... had pups with a wolf.
Aleu: Great. My grandmother was a wild animal? Did the wolf teach you how to know when a human wants to kill you?
Balto: I was accidentally separated from her when I was young, so I never spent much time with... the wolf. I remember that she was as white as snow, and she had this warm voice that made me feel safe. Well, then Boris took me in, and, after being raised by a goose it's a wonder I don't honk instead of bark.
Aleu: Why didn't you tell me this before?
Balto: Because I wanted to protect you.
Aleu: Protect me? From what? From the fact that no human will ever want me because I'm part wild animal?
Balto: Aleu.
Aleu: And what about my brothers and sisters? They've got wolf in them, too. Why did humans want them?
Balto: Because they don't look it, [sighs] and you do.
Aleu: It's not fair. I hate you!

[jumps off the boat crying]

Balto: Aleu? Aleu, come back!
Aleu: Leave me alone!

[runs away crying]

[Aniu appears to Balto, changing from a raven to a white wolf]

Balto: [groans] Now what?
Aniu: Only the journey home, my son.

[Balto turns to see Aniu]

Balto: Aniu? You're my-

[Aniu smiles and nods, then howls and disappears with the wind]

Balto: Goodbye to you, too... Mother.

Balto: Jenna.
Jenna: Balto, what are you doing here so early? Is Aleu alright?
Balto: I don't know. I was hoping she was with you. She's... kinda mad at me.
Jenna: Stay there.

[runs outside]

Jenna: Now tell me what happened.
Balto: [hops down from stack of crates] A hunter took aim at her.
Jenna: [gasps]
Balto: No, no. Don't worry. We got away. But I... finally had to tell her how humans see her.
Jenna: You mean you told her about being part...?
Balto: Yes. I should've done it sooner. I know that now. She's so angry with me. She must've run away.
Jenna: Run away?
Balto: I'm sorry, Jenna. I never thought it would turn out this way. I thought I could keep her safe.
Jenna: B-B-But she's not safe, she's running wild!

[starts to follow]

Balto: No, not you, Jenna. This is my fault, and it's something Aleu and I have to work out together. Don't worry. I'll find her.

Balto: Where are you?
Fox: Where are you?
Balto: Here. Keep talking and I'll find you.
Aniu: A cunning trickster.
Fox: You look disappointed.
Balto: Sorry. Just thought you might be a raven.
Fox: And I thought that you might be a hunter, but unlike you, I'm not disappointed. Say, I'll help you find your daughter if you'll help me out of this trap.
Balto: How did you know I was looking for my daughter?
Fox: The raven told me.
Balto: What do you know about the raven?
Fox: Much less than you, I'm sure. Now do we have a deal, or don't we?
Balto: Yes. But no tricks.

[takes rope off fox]

Balto: There. How can you help me find my daughter?
Fox: Easy. By giving you a little push.

[pushes Balto into the water]

Balto: Ahhhhh!

[surfaces]

Balto: Why did you do that? Help me!
Fox: Oh, but I did. And now you must help yourself.
Balto: [goes underwater, then surfaces again] Are you crazy? The current is too strong!
Fox: Then let the current take you!

Balto: Come on Aleu, you'll always be my baby, no matter how old you are.
Aleu: You're hopeless.

Balto: Goodbye,

[pause]

Balto: daughter.

Dingo: Are you gonna get a human, too?
Balto: Nah. You see, humans like cute little puppies like you, not grizly grown-ups like me.

Balto: Oh, Jenna. They're beautiful, just like you.

Aleu: We have to jump!
Balto: But we'll be killed!
Aleu: We'll be killed if we don't! [pushes Balto off the cliff, then jumps after him]

Aleu: [head tilted, curious] You've been following a raven?
Balto: Yeah. I know it sounds dumb.
Aleu: I've been following one too.

Balto: It's been a long day, Jenna. Let's go home.
Jenna: Not until a human adopts Aleu!
Balto: Face it, Jenna. She looks more like a wolf than me. No human is ever going to want her.
Jenna: That's not true! We have to keep trying.

Aleu: I'm not a wild animal.
Balto: He... he thought you were.

Terrier: There you are, laddies! I've been sniffin' all over for ye! The stork has landed. I repeat, the stork has landed!
Balto: Jenna? Jenna!

[runs toward the building Jenna's in]

Boris: What stork? I thought we were talking about raven. [suddenly realizes] Oh boy, *that* stork. I'm coming, Balto!

Balto: I've led a dog team before, but never a wolf pack.

Balto: It's just so hard to let my baby go.
Aleu: I'm not your... [sadly] Okay. So I'll always be your baby.

Balto: No time to argue! I'm your father, you do what I say!
Aleu: And I say I'm too big to be ordered around!

Balto: Dreams don't mean anything, Boris. They're just [starting to yawn] dreams. [yawns again]

Balto: When the right time comes, she'll... find a home.
Boris: Yes, but when the right time comes, will you let her?

Balto: I'll go.
Aleu: No. You don't belong here. You belong home, with my mother. But I *do* belong here. It's my destiny.
Nava the Wolf Shaman: [to Balto] Aniu told me it would be the one who is wolf but does not know. I believed it was you, but I was wrong. It is your daughter.
Balto: Are you sure?
Aleu: [nods]
Balto: It's just... so hard to let my baby go.
Aleu: Papa, I'm not your... okay. So I'll always be your baby. Goodbye, papa. Tell mom... I've finally found my home. [smiles]

Balto: This has gone too far, Aleu, and it isn't our battle.
Aleu: But papa, I saw caribou!
Balto: Look, this could get very dangerous. Despite my dreams or anything else, I will not put you in any danger.
Aleu: But this isn't just about us anymore, papa. This is about something bigger. Don't you see? We're supposed to help them. I'm sorry, but whether I stay or go should be my decision.
Balto: That wind is a sign that winter's coming early. Your mother will be worried sick. We both leave in the morning.

Aleu: Why did you come and find me?
Balto: I came to bring you home, Aleu.
Aleu: No. I don't wanna go home. Not until I find out who I am.
Balto: That's ridiculous, Aleu. You know who you are.
Aleu: No. I know *what* I am, but not

[short pause]

Aleu: *who* I am, and I'm not stopping until I find out.
Balto: Then I'm coming with you.

Aleu: [sweetly] Oh, papa.

Balto: I'll hold him off and you run for it!
Aleu: No, *I'll* hold him off and *you* run for it!
Balto: There's no time to argue! I'm your father, you do what I say!
Aleu: And I say that I'm too big to be ordered around!
Balto: How did you get so stubborn?
Aleu: I take after you, remember?

Balto: She's a good pup.
Boris: Good, yes. Pup, no. At more than year old, Aleu should have home of her own.
Balto: When the right time comes... she'll find a home.
Boris: Yes, but when the right time comes, will you let her?

[depressedly]

Boris: Oy, I hope so.

Jenna: But it's their time now. Why, I was their age when I was adopted by my girl.
Balto: But I don't think I can let them go, Jenna. Not yet.
Jenna: Balto, each of our children have their own lives to live. It's our job to love them, and then...
Boris: [in the background] LET GO!
Jenna: If we wait any longer, it will be harder for them to find homes. You know how humans have a soft spot for puppies.
Balto: Yeah. And so do I.

Dialogue from Balto 3

Kodi: [to mail dogs] All I ever wanted to do was be a part of your team. Bringing the mail and supplies is all about helping people. And now when somebody really needs our help, we're sitting on our butts. I mean if this is what it takes to be a mail dog... then I'm not sure that's what I want to be.

Boris: Is terrible. I'm going on date with gorgeous goose.
Balto: Now that is scary.

Boris: [having apparently succeeded after numerous failed attempts to conquer acrophobia] Ah! What do you know? I am flying. Ha-haaa! I am one hot goose!
Balto: I'm not sure Stella's gonna see it that way.
[Boris flies past about one foot off the ground]

Balto: [to mail team] This is serious. Now look, that plane is out there somewhere. And we're the only ones who can help.
Kirby: Well, that just proves our point. The difference between a dog and a machine is: dogs are tough and reliable.
Balto: I thought the difference is only one has a heart.

Kirby: What is that thing?

[looking at the plane]

Ralph: Watch it, Balto.
Kodi: Daaaaad, don't go getting any ideas. [as Balto hops into the plane]
Balto: Me? You think I'd just hop in and go for a flight?
Kodi: Yes.
Balto: You're right. I would if I could.

Balto: [to mail team] Nobody quits on my team! Nobody!
Muk and Luk: [talking about the "monster"] It was louder than a wild-eyed grizzly!
Balto, Jenna: [looking at each other, panicked] The bushplane!

Balto: [about the plane, which has just landed] It's here! My God, it's here!

Balto: Come on, Dusty. You got it!

Ralph: You can beat that plane paws down now that you're lead dog.
Balto: Listen.
Kirby: We're behind ya one hundred percent, Balto!
Kodi: If anyone can do it, you can!
Balto: Everyone listen. I-I've seen it fly. I-I just think we have to consider the possibility...
Kirby: Let's do the call!

[Kirby and the other dogs howl except Balto]

Balto: [nearly backs into Kodi, then runs off]

Balto: [to mail team] This is serious. Now look, that plane is out there somewhere. And we're the only ones who can help.
Kirby: Well, that just proves our point. The difference between a dog and a machine is: dogs are tough and reliable.
Balto: I thought the difference was that only one has a heart.
Balto: I've known Boris since I was a pup. Well, he may be a pain in the butt, but he's... well, he's the dad I never had.
