Discovery Place is a science museum in Charlotte, North Carolina that opened in 1981. The museum has a satellite museum in West Charlotte called the Charlotte Natural Museum and in 2009, it is planning to open a second satellite museum in Huntersville, North Carolina that will be known as Discovery Place Kids Huntersville.[1] These satellite museums, as well as the $32 million renovation of the existing museum[2] is a means of remaining current despite the age of some of their exhibits.[3]

Discovery Place also contains an OMNIMAX theater, known as the Charlotte Observer IMAX Dome Theater at Discovery Place. The OMNIMAX theater at the museum is one of two IMAX theater locations in North Carolina, with the other being located in Raleigh, North Carolina. In 2005, the museum made news when it chose not to show the IMAX film Volcanoes of the Deep Sea out of respect for those who do not believe in evolution.[4]
