Mylonite is a fine-grained, compact rock without cleavage or crystals. It is classified as a metamorphic rock and has a flow texture. It can be described as mircobreccia with streaks or bands.

Formation

Mylonite is formed with pressure, but not much heat. It is produced by intense grindingcaused by faulting or folding. Preexistent rocks are sheared and undergo granulation, which pulverizes and rolls the rock to dust. The newly formed rock is then stretched into bands. The formation of mylonite is associated with cataclastic and regional metamorphism.
