A riot occurred between rival gangs at a prison in Ciudad Juárez, Mexico on March 4, 2009. At least 20 people were killed during the prison riots.[1]

During the riots, prisoners lit blocks prison cells on fire, stabbed each other with knives, or were beaten.[1]

Earlier in the day, 1,500 Mexican troops began entering the city in an effort to reduce drug- and gang- related violence, which has resulted in the death of 2,000 people in Ciudad Juárez in 2008.[2]
