Reel Life Productions, also known as "RLP/Gothom", "RLP", "The Devil In The Moon", or "Gothom Inc", is an independent record label based in Detroit, Michigan in the United States, which was formed in 1990 by Esham and his older brother James H. Smith.[1][2]
The Early Days
In 1990, Esham and James H. Smith founded the independent record label Reel Life Productions. Since 1990 Esham and his brother James became multimillionaires without Radio or MTV paving way for other Detroit Labels such as Psychopathic Records, Shady Records, and Top Dog Records. Between 1990 and 1997 Reel Life Productions became one of the top Indie labels in the United States.
The James Smith Jail Period
In 1998 James Smith was sent to jail for Statatory Rape Charges and Esham Merged Reel Life Productions with Overtrue Records to form Gothom/Overcore which would last from 1999 to 2001. After Smith's Release he restarted Reel Life by reissuing the entire RLP/Gothom/Overcore Catalog. In Late 2005 James Smith would once again be returned to jail due to a probation violation which would send Esham to leave Psychopathic Records in October 2005 to take over as sole owner of Reel Life Productions/Gothom Records alongside TJ Knight of Aknu Media.
