Aire and Calder Navigation
Appearance
The Aire and Calder Navigation is a river and canal system of the River Aire and the River Calder in the county of West Yorkshire, England.
Much of the design was completed by civil engineers John Smeaton and William Jessop during the late 18th century with the Knottingley and Goole Canal later in 1826 and the New Junction Canal in 1897. The company's chief engineer William H. Bartholomew devised the successful compartment boat ("Tom Puddings") system for the transport of coal from the Yorkshire collieries to Goole in the second half of the nineteenth century and the first half of the twentieth century.
