Gaba Corporation (株式会社 GABA, Kabushiki Kaisha Gaba) is a chain of eikaiwa (English conversation schools) in Japan[1] The company was founded in 1995[2] and is headquartered in Meguro-ku in Tokyo with schools in the Tokyo, Chiba, Yokohama, Nagoya, Osaka, Kyoto, and Kobe areas.[3] The President & CEO is Chutatsu Aono.[1]The company name "Gaba" is an acronym for "girls, be ambitious; boys, be audacious!".[4]

The company provides language lessons on a "one-to-one"[1] (one student and one teacher) basis and using textbook lessons and online (computerized) instructor aids, language and vocabulary drills, and guided conversation topics.[5]

Gaba is unique in the eikaiwa industry in that its instructors are not classified as employees, but as sub-contractors, or itaku. This means that teachers do not receive benefits such as paid annual leave, paid sick leave, transportation costs, and unemployment insurance. This also means there is no guaranteed income - sub-contractors are only paid for lessons they actually teach, with no pay for unbooked lessons.[6]

On July 13, 2005, Gaba opened up a 'next generation' learning studio designed for women in Ginza. The new location provided VIP "executive booths" that afforded complete privacy for the teacher and the student. [7]

In 2007, Gaba indicated it would miss projected earnings after new enrollments fell short of expectations by about 20%. The shortfall was attributed to an overall deterioration of the eikaiwa industry that stemmed from bad publicity surrounding government restrictions placed on Nova.[8]
