Leah Shakdial

was deleted as a copyright violation. You pasted the text from two websites, it looks like. She is notable for the court case and the Rabbinic opinions, not as a person. But the court case should be somewhere to refer to it from other pages. As you know I found myself doing this from Rabbi Waldenberg.

Yeshivat Chovevei Torah

Hello! Compared to the daily or worse vandalism that articles like Who is a Jew and Bible get, the weekly vandalism this one gets is comparatively mild. Also, most of it really isn't vandalism -- it's newbies (I don't know if they're sockpuppets) with an axe to grind offering opinionated, usually unsourced content, which is not ideal but nonetheless represent legitimate attempts to edit rather than the sort of things hardcore vandals put in (which tend to involve things like 4-letter words and more than you'd care to know about their self-reported exploits with their girlfriends). It seems to me that vandalism is a price of a user-editable encyclopedia, and if we start blocking more articles, we should do it as a general policy and start with articles that are much more regularly vandalized than this one. But you're welcome to talk to an admin about your concerns (like User:Crzrussian, User:JoshuaZ, User:TShilo12). Best, --Shirahadasha 17:03, 5 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm all for working together, but it's easier if we actually communicate about it in advance. In any case, my plan for the smaller midrashim article was to move all the text for the individual midrashim each into its own article, and then just have a bulleted list linking to each independent article. So I will eventually have to undo some of your work, for example, I will turn the headings back into bullets at some point (since there's no sense in having empty headings). I'm sure you dislike having your work undone as much as I do, so this why it's best to communicate in advance. (I know I keep "inuse" tags on articles much longer than recommended, so people probably think I've forgotten them, but I haven't.) Anyway, have a good night. Hi Shira. I have not been active for a while. But my watchpage has filled up with an over 6 reverse edit war on the NCSY page. Can you handle this? And is there a guideline page for an outsider to manage an edit war. --Jayrav 23:44, 17 May 2007 (UTC) Further note- It seems that this is similar to the edit war that occured on the Shlomo Carlebach page over having a criticism section. I'll take care of it. FYI the section involved isn't simply criticism of NCSY, it's a claim that NCSY has responsibility for the Baruch Lanner affair -- serious defamation and WP:BLP issues, and it's not clear the source provided is reliable. Am encouraging folks to cool off, and create a Baruch Lanner page and ensure their sourcing meets Wikipedia standards before adding material on the issue to the NCSY page. --Shirahadasha 03:56, 18 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

NCSY related: The Jewish Student Union page is besieged by those insisting that verifiable and notable information is "irrelevant," and instead, quotes from NCSY/JSU staff are being inserted at great length as "proof" of the JSU non-denominational approach. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jewish_Student_Union. Wurzburger

Thanks for helping on his page. Although it's not necessarily notable -- he was head of the Beit Din that converted the only gentile in history to write a translation of the New Testament and THEN convert to Judaism. Idea for Talmud articles

Hi Jayrav: I am reposting the following request from User Sh76us (talk · contribs) on my user talk page for wider notification:

I was thinking of trying to stimulate development of a series of articles on Gemara concepts and doctrines, maybe to help children or newcomers to Gemara with explanations of some fundamental concepts that recur throughout the Gemara. Some examples might be articles on Yiush, Chazakah, Ta'aninun (as in "Ta'aninun L'Yoresh"), Eidim Zomemin (forgive my awful transliterations), Migu, etc., etc. Maybe we could even create a category or subcategory for it. I created Breira in this vein. As I don't have the experience or expertise in Wikipedia to know what to do to best develop this idea, I figured I'd come to you for your opinions on: (1) whether it's a good idea; and (2) How to best go about implementing it. Jayrav, In the Kabbalah article there is now only a short mention of the debate over Neoplatonic influence, in the last paragraph here[[4]]. It would be good to expand this and/or link to a separate article on the subject. (But, truthfully, that whole section, as it now is, seems very speculative, and disorganized too. I am disinclined to remove any of it because I have hopes someone with the necessary knowledge will improve it.) Malcolm Schosha

Please read the Wikipedia Manual of Style and at least try to maintain Wikipedia style guidelines when you do a major reorganization of an article. What are you talking about? The material on the sefirot was from the Gershom Scholem approach and was sourced accordingly. It was not Neoplatonism but Scholem on pre-ZOhar usage of the term in yetzirah and Bahir. At point, MAlcolm, you got to say what counts as a real source for you? What history of the kabblah? If JE does not count nor Scholem, then what? If you are Chabad, or Kabbalah centre or Aryeh Kaplan then say so and we can note the different approaches accordingly. But to take out gershom Scholem material and say it is the same as warren Kenton, I dont understand. --Jayrav (talk) 14:36, 6 March 2008 (UTC)

Beth El Synagogue

You made a comment on the AfD that originally the term wasn't simply a random name for a synagogue, but referred to a specific type -- an Orthodox synagogue with mixed seating. Do you have any sources for this? If there is actually a subject to write about here rather than a random list of synagogues that would be interesting. A Special Dispatch
Just a note, not aimed at anyone in particular. By order of the administrative cabal, it is officially not cool (and possibly dickish) to call someone an anti-semite when they aren't being anti-semitic. Anti-semitic is a very charged word, and it's important only to use it when you're absolutely sure it applies, lest it become the subject of a Godwin-esque law. Remember Hanlon's Razor: never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity.
In the News

  • A new class on the importance scale has been added- C Class- which covers articles better than start but not quite to B Class yet. It is up to the WikiProjects to decide whether to adopt them or not. Currently, there has been little discussion within our Projects, so if you feel strongly either way be sure to note so at your Project[s].
  • There is a proposal to reword the section on NPOV regarding religious articles. Please see Wikipedia_talk:NPOV#Religion section - Disputes between historians or scientists and religious_views to weigh in.
  • Thanks largely to the efforts of Xyz7890, a new navbox has come into being featuring Halakha topics. See: Template talk:Halakha to join in the conversation about how it can best be improved.

To Do

  • The Simple English Wikipedia is beginning a project of creating and improving articles related to religion, including Judaism. At the present time, volunteers are needed to propose our most important subjects for articles to be created. The official working list is here and a more extended list is here. If you are unsure of proper topics, you might try checking our lists of top importance level articles: Judaism and Jewish History. (WikiProject Kabbalah currently doesn't have such a list)
  • [Simple English] WikiProject Christianity is considering running a monthly drive wherein two or three top importance articles from English Wikipedia are simplified and moved over to S.E. They have extended an offer to work with us in creating a similar project for Judaism related articles. For questions or volunteer opportunities, please contact User:John Carter.
  • WikiProject Kabbalah is in dire need of an article rating system for quality and importance. If you are familiar with that system and have some time on your hands, please create one. It could also use some infoboxes...

  • There is a collaboration drive to get Holocaust in Lithuania to good article status. For information about how you can help, see the talk page or contact User:Piotrus.
  • WikiProject Kabbalah's only Featured and Good articles have been removed from the WikiProject, on the grounds that neither article (Diane Keaton and David Beckham, respectively) actually mention the subject's affiliation with Kabbalah. If you have sourced information linking either of these people to Kabbalah, please add it so the articles can be returned to the WikiProject.
  • After a rather heated discussion, there are now two barnstars for use by the Jewish WikiProjects, {{The Jewish Barnstar}} and {{The New Jewish Barnstar}}, and you can choose which one you would like to use.. Remember: barnstars are for rewarding users who are doing good work on the project or on Judaism, Jewish History, or Kabbalah articles, and anyone can give anyone else a barnstar. If you see a user who you thinks deserves a thank you, give them a barnstar!

  • If you have some spare time on your hands, we could use an article about a Kabbalah scholar named Moshe Idel. According to HG there are quite a few sources easily available, you can contact him if you have questions. Be sure to nominate it for DYK if the finished article is eligible.
