Palamaner or Palmaner is one of the prominent towns of Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh, India.

Geography

Palamaner, a municipality in Chittoor District, Andra Pradesh is located at 13°12′00″N 78°45′00″E / 13.2000°N 78.7500°E / 13.2000; 78.7500.[1] It has an average elevation of 683 meters (2,244 ft).

Palmaner is located on the NH4 Highway which connects Bangalore and Chennai. Being on the border of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, Palmaner has a mixture of languages and cultures. In the year 2008 population was around 43000.

The north side of Palmaner has a court, industrial area and veterinary college. On the south side there is a government college, school, and big banker’s colony.

The temple of Konetirayala Swamy(Lord Venkateshwara) , KonetiRayala Swamy Temple is at Keelapatla village, which is said to be as old as the Tirupathi Temple, The Mordhana dam (project) in located on tamila nadu territory near 20 km from Palamaner.

Major villages near Palamaner are Kallu Palli, V.Kota, Keelapatla, Baireddipalli, Pathikonda, Gangavaram, Lakkanapalli, Peddachellara Gunta, Nellipatla, Kolamasana palli and Eduru.

Palamaner is 200 km from Chennai, 136 km from Bangalore and 108 km from Tirupathi.

Twenty kilometers north of Palamaner, exists a waterfall called “Kaigal” valley.

Seven kilometers to the south is a lake called “Kalyana Revu”. Kalyana Revu was named after a myth where, Kalyani, a girl who could not succeed in her love, committed suicide in the lake. South of Kalyana Revu there is the Ganganna Sirassu Water Falls, a waterfall that drops from about 1,000 ft (300 m). This is one of the most beautiful places on earth.

Palamaner is also called as ooty.

Forests

Palamaner is surrounded by valleys, hills, waterfalls and forests. The forest around the town is the only place in Andhra Pradesh with wild elephants. The forests of Palmaner has been declared as Koudinya Elephant Sanctuary, by the Government of AP helped by government of India.

Palamaner is a starting spot for trekking in forests spread 200 km around the borders of Andhara Pradesh and Tamil Nadu which covers forest containing wild life, waterfalls and hilly regions for rock climbing and river rafting.

Naming

The name "Palamaner" has originated from the name "Pallavan eeru". "eeru" in Telegu means "Lake" which was dug by Pallavan's for the people living around.

Climate

The temperatures are moderate as Palamaner is located at a higher altitude. Palamaner can be compared with Ooty, a popular hill resort.

Holidays

On May 15th every year people from different regions participate for blessings and well being from the holy deity "Gangamma". This holiday originated from a 1930s plague prevailed in the region taking thousands of lives. The locals believe that it was controlled by offering prayers in the form of Ganga Jatra.

Economics

The major investments are in dairy and poultry because the climate suits these businesses. There are many dairy and poultry farms coming up in the recent years. The town has a cattle farm which helps the breeding programs of the region.

The Terrakota art pottery is an art of the soil of Palmaner. There is huge demand for the terracotta items in Rajasthan, Gujarath and Punjab states of India. One can see the terracotta items of Palmaner in any of the Art Exhibitions, and handicraft emporias of in most of the cities of India.

Palamaner was popular for roof tile manufacturing for a long time.

Rural areas near Palamaner are famous in silk production. The government has decided to setup a textile park in 500 acres (2.0 km2) of Palamaner.

Palamaner has a tomato commisson market, where farmers from different parts of the district will come to sell tomatoes. Every Friday many farmers gather in the market area to sell vegetables, fruits, food grains, dry fish, household articles, etc.

There are many small scale industries developing in and around Palamaner and the government is giving aid in developing such industries.

Religion

The town has a mixture of Muslim and Christian communities apart from the majority Hindu population.

Social Service

MSR Educational Society

This educational society is formed in memory of renowned academician Late M.SITA RAM (Ex. Principal- FAC Govt Jr. College Palamaner ) by his students, friends and family members in 2001. It was registered in 2007.

Since its formation the society has issued Certificates of Excellence for various students for their academic performances along with cash prizes at different schools and colleges across the Chittoor district (mainly at Palamaner & Gurramkonda). Encouraging the merit students and funding the poor (rural) students for their education is the main objective of the organization.

Prime objective of this society is to encourage the students of Govt schools and Junior colleges across the district.
