Claudine Barretto (born July 20, 1979) is a Filipino television and film actress.

TV Career

In 1992, Barretto was discovered by talent manager Douglas Quijano when her older sister Gretchen Barretto brought her to the debut party of Ruffa Gutierrez at the Coconut Palace. That same year, she landed her first major break on television when she was cast as one of the mainstays of ABS-CBN's youth-oriented musical variety show, Ang TV. In quick succession, she then played Dolphy's daughter named Bing in the sitcom Home Along Da Riles topbilled by Dolphy, and Agot Isidro's sister named Tony in Oki Doki Doc topbilled by Aga Muhlach.

Barretto's lead television roles started with 1997's Mula Sa Puso where she played the rich heiress, Via, opposite Rico Yan and Diether Ocampo. Then came 1999's Saan Ka Man Naroroon where her performance as triplets Rosario, Rosenda and Rosemarie earned her a nomination for Best Actress in the Asian TV Awards. Next in line was 2001's Sa Dulo Ng Walang Hanggan where she played the role of Angelina in the past and Angeline in the present.

After three consecutive soap operas, Barretto became part of the ensemble cast of 2003's two-season weekly series Buttercup with Diether Ocampo and Piolo Pascual to name a few. In 2004, she returned to primetime via the first modern fantaserye as the mermaid Marina. 2005's Ikaw ang Lahat sa Akin directed by F.M. Reyes with John Lloyd Cruz, Bea Alonzo, Angelika de la Cruz and Diether Ocampo marked the first time that she was not directed by Wenn Deramas.

After getting married, Barretto was reunited with Deramas in 2007's Walang Kapalit with Jodi Sta. Maria, TJ Trinidad and Piolo Pascual where some scenes were filmed in Australia. After giving birth, she played the role originated by Susan Roces in the 20-episode sineserye Maligno followed by Iisa Pa Lamang with Angelica Panganiban, Diether Ocampo and Gabby Concepcion under Ruel Bayani's direction. She is poised to make another television comeback in a special participation role in 2009's May Bukas Pa.

Film Career

Barretto was an exclusive contract star of Seiko Films before she was tied to a long-running contract with Star Cinema. In 1994's Lagalag : The Eddie Fernandez Story, she was cast as Pops Fernandez with the late Rudy Fernandez playing her father. In 1996, she was able to work with Lorna Tolentino in May Nagmamahal Sa'yo and Sharon Cuneta in Madrasta. In 1998, she landed her first major lead role in Dahil Mahal Na Mahal Kita with Diether Ocampo and Rico Yan as rivals for her "bad girl" character named Mela. In 1999, this love triangle carried on in the movie version of Mula Sa Puso, and in the same year, Barretto and Ocampo figured in a love triangle with Maricel Soriano in Soltera. In 2000, she played the ungrateful daughter of Vilma Santos' overseas worker mother in Anak, while in 2001, she played a nun opposite Robin Padilla in Oops! Teka Lang...Diskarte Ko 'To (her first and so far only action-oriented film). Anak was also the Best Foreign Language Film entry of the Philippines for the 71st Academy Awards.

Barretto received her first Box Office Queen crown on the strength of the box office results of her 2002 releases: Got 2 Believe (the last movie of the late Rico Yan and her first and so far only romantic comedy film) and Kailangan Kita (her first film with Aga Muhlach as his leading lady and her first Gawad Urian-nominated performance). For 2004's Milan (her first film with Piolo Pascual and her second Gawad Urian-nominated performance), she received not only the Ms. RP Movies recognition but also her first Best Actress awards from FAP and FAMAS. In addition, Milan (with the films Dekada '70 and Panaghoy Sa Suba) was also exhibited in the New Cinema of the World section of the Cannes Film Festival, where the Filipino lead stars walked the red carpet.

Barretto garnered three more Best Actress awards from PASADO, FAMAS (she was a rare back-to-back awardee), and PMPC for 2005's Nasaan Ka Man with Jericho Rosales and Diether Ocampo. This was also her third Gawad Urian-nominated performance. A revived MARIA CLARA awards (at least for that year) gave her another Best Actress trophy but this time for 2005's Dubai where she played the object of affection of brothers John Lloyd Cruz and Aga Muhlach. She received her second Box Office Queen crown (shared with co-star Kris Aquino) for the 201-million-peso domestic gross of 2006's Sukob (her first and so far only horror-oriented film). As of February 2009, TV Patrol World reports that Sukob remains to be the highest-grossing Philippines-produced movie not only of Star Cinema but also the entire country.

Personal Life

Barretto had previous relationships with Mark Anthony Fernandez (her screen partner in the films Pare Ko and Mangarap Ka) and the late Rico Yan during her youth. She is married to actor Raymart Santiago, with whom she has a son, Rodrigo Santino, and an adopted daughter Sabina Natasha.
