Heart South Devon, formally South Hams Radio, is an Independent Local Radio station serving the South Hams area of Devon, England. The station opened on 1 December 1999 and its current licence expires on 30 November 2011. It is a joint venture run and owned by UKRD Group and Global Radio. On Monday 23 March 2009, South Hams Radio became Heart South Devon, as part of the Heart Network.
The Ofcom approved format statement describes 'a locally focused music and information station for 25 to 54 year olds in the South Hams area'.
The music policy is for 'a melodic mix of hits from the sixties/seventies onwards, spiced with easy listening and love songs. Current chart hits and re-currents from the previous year should not comprise more than half the daytime output. Specialist music which complements the main mix may feature outside daytime.[1]
In November 2005 it was announced that GCap Media's local radio stations in the South West, including South Hams Radio, were to be sold as they were outside of the company's primary target area [1]. Four months later GCap decided that the sale would not go ahead, essentially because the offers made fell short of their expectations.[2]
On November 1 2008, Global Radio discontinued using the name GCap Media.
In September 2008, it was announced that South Hams Radio would be rebranded as part of a national rebranding exercise by owners Global Radio, in which twenty-nine stations will be renamed as Heart. The rebranding of South Hams Radio took place on 23 March 2009. Most of Heart Radio's programming is produced in London, with the only local shows being the breakfast and drivetime shows during the week.
