A Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-21 pilot of the Vietnamese People's Air Force, he flew with the 921st fighter regiment and tied for second place (with Nguyen Hong Nhi and Mai Van Cuong amongst Vietnam War fighter aces with eight kills[1]. Of his eight kills, it is certain that on 20 July 1967 he shared a kill of an American F-4 Phantom II with Nguyen Ngoc Do[2] , and that on 16 September 1967 he shot down a US Air Force RF-101C of the 20th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron (serial number 56-0181); the American pilot was named Patterson[2]
