Stargate Universe (abbreviated as SGU)[1][2] is an upcoming science fiction television series, part of the Stargate franchise. The series was greenlit on August 22, 2008 and is scheduled to debut as a two- or three-hour movie and then begin regular weekly airings on the Sci Fi Channel (soon to be renamed SyFy) in October 2009.[3] Brad Wright, Robert C. Cooper and Carl Binder serve as executive producers and writers. Stargate Universe started filming on February 18, 2009.

Being firmly entrenched in pre-established Stargate mythology, Stargate Universe follows the adventures of a team of explorers from present-day Earth after they find the Ancient spaceship Destiny. They must fend for themselves aboard the ship in the far reaches of the universe as they are unable to return to Earth. The announced main cast is Robert Carlyle as Dr. Nicholas Rush, Justin Louis as Colonel Everett Young, David Blue as Eli Wallace, Brian J. Smith as Lieutenant Matthew Scott, Jamil Walker Smith as Master Sergeant Ronald Greer, Alaina Huffman as Master Sergeant Tamara Johansen, and Elyse Levesque as Chloe Armstrong.

Concept and setting

Stargate Universe was conceived as "a completely separate, third entity" in the live-action Stargate franchise[4] – as opposed to Stargate Atlantis, which was created as a spin-off from the first series Stargate SG-1. Stargate Atlantis producer Joseph Mallozzi stated that Universe aims to "delight veteran fans, but also appeal to newcomers who may not necessarily know the difference between an Alteran and an Asuran", and that it is "in many ways [...] a much more cerebral and mature addition to the franchise. While firmly entrenched in pre-established Stargate mythology, Stargate Universe definitely strikes out in an exciting new direction."[5] The new show will be more serialized than its predecessors.[6]

Like the first two series in the franchise, Stargate Universe will take place during the present time, not in the distant future.[4] The show will be set on an Ancient ship, the Destiny, that was part of an Ancient experiment to seed the galaxies with Stargates millions of years ago. A second ship would follow up and explore, using the ninth and final gate chevron (whose purpose was previously unknown) to get to the first ship, but the Ancient experiment was prematurely ended by the Ancients' ascension.[7] A team of soldiers and scientists from Earth step through the Stargate in present time to find the Destiny after their base is attacked.[8][9] The Destiny is so big that they believe it to be a planet at first, but the ship is now falling apart as it was never meant to be inhabited.[10] As it is impossible for the team to return to Earth, they must fend for themselves aboard the ship as it takes them to the far reaches of the universe.[8] The writers have discussed the possibility that each season represents a voyage of the Destiny through a different galaxy.[11]

The show will be more relationship-based and more arc-driven[12] and will involve more space-based action than SG-1 or Atlantis.[8] "Survival and sacrifice" were the two main themes that were discussed at the preliminary script stages of the show,[13] as even life support including air supply is a problem.[14] Stargate Universe will be "a lot darker" than the previous Stargate series, beginning with three major deaths in the pilot episode and having one suicide by episode six,[15] although humor will remain part of the franchise.[16] The show will focus mostly on the people aboard the ship instead of planet-based exploration,[12] and in Brad Wright's words will "hopefully explor[e] the truly alien, and [avoid] the rubber faced English-speaking one".[16] Despite the focus on survival, the show "will also focus on exploration and adventure – and, by extension, the occasional alien encounter as well".[17] A single dominant villain race like on SG-1 and Atlantis will not be featured.[16]

Development

Stargate Universe is filmed at The Bridge Studios in Vancouver, Canada.

Stargate producers Brad Wright and Robert C. Cooper originally planned to write the pilot script for Stargate Universe during the summer of 2007, making a 2008 premiere possible.[4] The series was then pitched as "an expensive series" to the Sci Fi Channel in the last quarter of 2007, and according to Wright, "the pitch was received very well".[7] However, the project was put on hold because of the on-going work on Stargate Atlantis and Stargate: Continuum, and the 2007–2008 Writers Guild of America strike.[4][7] The series was given the official greenlight for a 2009 debut by the Sci Fi Channel on August 22, 2008, shortly after the cancellation of Stargate Atlantis had been announced.[8] Joseph Mallozzi explained that a new series would have lower salaries and licensing fees than a new sixth season of Atlantis would have had.[18] MGM co-funds the project.[19]

Brad Wright pitched the series and its first five episodes to the Stargate Atlantis writers and producers in mid-September 2008.[5] Wright, Cooper, and Carl Binder produce the show, while Joseph Mallozzi and Paul Mullie serve as writers and consultant producers.[12] Stargate Atlantis writers Martin Gero and Alan McCullough contribute scripts, but are not part of the regular writer staff.[20] Author and blogger John Scalzi was hired as a creative consultant, "a background rather than foreground sort of job".[21] Most of the Stargate Atlantis crew such as stunt coordinator James Bamford and composer Joel Goldsmith move over to Universe.[22]

The writers started spinning stories for the first season in mid-November 2008.[13] New writers are being auditioned for freelance scripts and possible staff positions.[19] The United States Air Force and Marine Corps review the scripts.[20] The first casting calls were issued in late September 2008.[23] The projected film start of Stargate Universe was initially slated for February 4, 2009,[24] but was moved to February 18, 2009.[25] The show is filmed on stages 2, 4 (Destiny set) and 5 (Icarus Base set) at The Bridge Studios[17][26] (SG-1 and Atlantis had been filmed at stages 5 and 6)[27] and on location in and around Vancouver, British Columbia.[24] Parts of an early episode will be filmed in and around Alamogordo, New Mexico from late April through early May 2009.[28] Stargate Universe will show computer-generated worlds filmed in digital sets.[16]

Sci Fi Wire published concept art of the Destiny in October 2008.[29] The Sci Fi Channel aired a thirty-second trailer of Universe during the two-hour series finale of Battlestar Galactica in March 2009, showing various clips of the Universe team aboard the ship plus the SGU Stargate with the first visual effects.[30] Joseph Mallozzi, who often posted behind-the-scenes photos of SG-1 and Atlantis on his blog, said that MGM would keep the set under wraps for the foreseeable future.[17]

Cast

Short character breakdowns for the series regulars (created for casting calls) leaked on the internet on September 17, 2008.[23][31] Joseph Mallozzi explained the largely negative initial fan reaction[5][12][16] as a passionate response to the preceding cancellation announcement of Atlantis.[12] Brad Wright dismissed negative comments as a sole reaction to the wording of the network; character breakdowns are written to aid casting directors and agents in the pre-selection process, and "always sound shallow, and if they're written to appear 'deep' it's just ridiculous".[16] Robert C. Cooper replied to concerns of young age that the SG-1 cast was also quite young in their first season. The producers were "looking for people who are a little more identifiable and contemporary," with an "everyman on the street point of view" after being challenged by the situation.[31] Martin Gero considered Stargate Universe as an ensemble show, more than the previous two Stargate live-action series were.[32]

Auditions were held in Los Angeles.[33] The producers were looking for well-known names for the lead roles, but intended to mostly cast "either new faces, or people you've seen in other stuff but maybe aren't as aware of".[31] BAFTA and Screen Actors Guild Award-winning actor Robert Carlyle was the first announced series regular in mid-December 2008.[34] The casting of Justin Louis, David Blue, Brian J. Smith and Jamil Walker Smith as series regulars was announced in mid-January 2009.[1] The casting of Alaina Huffman and Elyse Levesque was announced in late February 2009, along with other actors whose status as regular or recurring cast has not been established.[3] The cast is American (Blue, Smith, and Smith), Canadian (Louis, Levesque, and Huffman) and Scottish (Carlyle).

Main cast

  • Robert Carlyle as Dr. Nicholas Rush[1] – The "ship's brilliant Machiavellian scientist"[35] whom Joseph Mallozzi had first mentioned in his blog in mid-November 2008 as Dr. David Rush.[13] The ship's crew believe Rush to be losing his mind, but he does things for a reason.[15] Mallozzi rectified casting reports in mid-December 2008[34] that Rush "is not the leader of the unplanned expedition. That honor falls to Colonel Everett Young. For now. But things could have a way of changing on board a ship manned by a disparate group with very different agendas...".[35] Rush is the only confirmed main character[16] who was not included in the initial casting character breakdowns.[23] About a year before being cast, Carlyle wanted to try something new in his career and approached television companies in Los Angeles. They offered him several parts, but Stargate Universe had the greatest appeal to him as "suddenly a drama [was] opening up in space, [and] in the past that was something that was slightly missing from the genre".[10] He was aware of the success of the Stargate franchise and had seen "quite a bit of SG-1, plus a bunch of Atlantis".[14] Carlyle accepted the role because of Wright and Cooper's take on the drama and direction of the show, and he is "[honestly] more than prepared" to play the character for possibly many years.[14] According to Robert C. Cooper, Carlyle will keep his Scottish accent for the role.[36]
  • Justin Louis as Everett Young[1] – Described in the initial character breakdown as a "handsome, capable, former SG team leader" in his 40s who holds the rank of Colonel. He is "like the Jack O'Neill of ten years ago" yet has sharper edges. At the beginning of Stargate Universe, he has been married for two years and is the temporary commander of a secret off-world base.[23]
David Blue will play Eli Wallace
  • David Blue as Eli Wallace[1] – Named Eli Hitchcock in the casting call,[23] Eli Wallace is a "total slacker" in his early twenties and an "utter genius" in mathematics, computers and other fields. He is a social outcast with an "acerbic sense of humor", and lacks confidence in his intelligence. The character breakdown compares him to "Matt Damon's character from Good Will Hunting with a little Jack Black thrown in".[23] He will be the main source of comic relief in the show.[15]
  • Brian J. Smith as Matthew Scott[1] – A skilled and well-trained Junior SGC member in his early twenties holding the rank of Lieutenant. He is "mentally unprepared for the urgency of the situation" aboard the ship. He was named Jared Nash in the initial casting call.[23] Before being cast, Brian J. Smith had been working as a stage actor in New York for a year and a half and had seen a couple of Stargate episodes. Smith taped his Stargate Universe audition and was invited to a screen test in Los Angeles. He received the news of being cast a few days after the screen test.[37]
  • Jamil Walker Smith as Ronald Greer[1] – In early casting documents named Ron "Psycho" Stasiak,[23] Ronald Greer is a "big, strong, silent" Marine aged 20 with a mysterious past who lacks control over his temper in non-combat situations. The character breakdown compares him to Eric Bana's character "Hoot" in Black Hawk Down.[23] His rank is Master Sergeant.[38]
  • Elyse Levesque as Chloe Armstrong[3] – She is a "stunning and sexy" daughter of a US Senator around her twenties, whose character is tested "after her father's tragic death and the dire circumstances of being trapped on a spaceship".[23] Her father (played by Christopher McDonald)[39] had political oversight over the Stargate project trying to dial the ninth chevron.[40] Before the producers settled on the final name, the character was named Chloe Carpenter[23] and Chloe Walker.[40] Levesque's "wonderfully nuanced audition" convinced the producers to cast her, as she demonstrated an "impressive range in two very different [and] demanding scenes".[39]
  • Alaina Huffman as Tamara Johansen[3] – Named Tamara Jon in the character breakdown, she is an SGC field medic in her early twenties with off-world experience. She has a modest background, yet is "beautiful, tough, smart, capable." At the beginning of the series, she is overwhelmed by the lack of medical knowledge, experience, medicine and supplies aboard the ship.[23] Her rank is Master Sergeant.[38] Mallozzi considered Huffman's audition in December 2008 "so good that, quite frankly, we would've been crazy not to cast her".[39]

Cast of unknown status

Ming-Na will play Camille Wray

The names of many other characters have been announced in Mallozzi's blog[6][41] and in casting reports via GateWorld since November 2008.[40][42] The following actors were cast, but their status as regular or recurring has not been officially confirmed as of late February 2009.

  • Ming-Na as Camille Wray[3] – An IOA accountant who becomes the highest-ranking IOA member left stranded on the ship. She has "a false sense of importance and superiority to the other military and civilian population along with a stubborn way of asserting it".[40] Mallozzi thought in December 2008 that the character "has a lot of potential for getting under Young and co.'s skin. She's a definite love her or hate her type of character, one who'll prove the bane to many a series regular, and probably some viewers as well."[41] First mentioned in Mallozzi's blog in late November 2008,[6] Camille Wray was considered as a potentially recurring character after her first appearance in the pilot episode.[40] She is also set to appear in "Earth" and the mid-season two-parter.[43][39]
  • Lou Diamond Phillips as Colonel Telford[3] – A proud and "stubbornly confident" life-long military man. He is highly regarded by his superiors and is the chosen leader of the expedition.[38]
  • Christopher McDonald as Senator Armstrong[39] – The father of Chloe Armstrong. He has political oversight over the Stargate project trying to dial the ninth chevron,[40] but dies in an early Universe episode.[23]

Cross-over appearances

From the beginning, Robert C. Cooper ruled out the permanent inclusion of any well-known characters from the two previous Stargate series, although "there will certainly be plenty of opportunity for cross over, and there certainly might be some familiar faces in the premiere and in subsequent episodes".[31] Brad Wright approached Michael Shanks (Daniel Jackson) and Robert Picardo (Richard Woolsey), who in turn declared their interest in appearing early on in the show.[44][45] Ona Grauer, who played the Ancient Ayiana in SG-1 and Atlantis, will also appear in an early Universe episode.[39] Casting scripts for the episode "Earth", which partly plays in Washington, D.C., mentioned the appearance of a character named "O'Neill", sparking rumors of a guest appearance by Richard Dean Anderson (Jack O'Neill).[43]

Episodes

Stargate Universe will have stand-alone episodes and multi-parters, but will have more season-long plot and character threads running through every episode than the other Stargate series.[2] Brad Wright is hopeful that Stargate Universe will last three or more seasons.[16] The first season is planned to consist of 20 episodes.[20] Brad Wright and Robert C. Cooper wrote the three-parter series opener named "Air",[16][46] which was originally planned to be a two-parter.[13] According to Joseph Mallozzi, "although it is, effectively a three-parter, from a story standpoint the first two parts can (and probably will) serve as the premiere."[47] A mid-season two-parter will be written by Joseph Mallozzi and Paul Mullie.[46] All episode slots remain subject to change.[48] Stargate Universe is expected to premiere on the US Sci Fi in October 2009.[3]
