Forrest County is a county located in the state of Mississippi. As of 2000, the population is 72,604. It is named in honor of Confederate General Nathan B. Forrest. Its county seat is Hattiesburg6.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,218 km² (470 mi²). 1,208 km² (467 mi²) of it is land and 9 km² (4 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.76% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 72,604 people, 27,183 households, and 17,315 families residing in the county. The population density is 60/km² (156/mi²). There are 29,913 housing units at an average density of 25/km² (64/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 64.34% White, 33.55% Black or African American, 0.19% Native American, 0.74% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.40% from other races, and 0.75% from two or more races. 1.26% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 27,183 households out of which 31.00% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 42.60% are married couples living together, 17.20% have a female householder with no husband present, and 36.30% are non-families. 28.50% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.80% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.47 and the average family size is 3.07.

In the county the population is spread out with 24.50% under the age of 18, 18.20% from 18 to 24, 27.60% from 25 to 44, 18.30% from 45 to 64, and 11.30% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 30 years. For every 100 females there are 89.30 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 85.30 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $27,420, and the median income for a family is $35,791. Males have a median income of $28,742 versus $20,500 for females. The per capita income for the county is $15,160. 22.50% of the population and 17.10% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 28.60% of those under the age of 18 and 12.80% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
