Giovanni "John" Mario Castrilli was born 22 November 1950 in Roccamandolfi in Italy. He has been a Liberal member of the Western Australian Legislative Assembly representing the electorate of Bunbury after winning the seat in the 2005 election.[1]

Castrilli's father, Antonio, arrived in Australia in 1952 from after migrating from Roccamandolfi in Italy, he was joined by the rest of his family in 1954.[2]

Starting his career in local politics in 1991, Castrilli served as a councillor of the City of Bunbury from 1991 to 1997. Castrilli was then elected as Mayor of Bunbury in 1997 and re-elected in 2001 with a massive majority of 73.5%.[3]

Contesting the seat of Bunbury for the first time in the 2005 election Castrilli beat the sitting ALP member with a swing of +0.6% and winning the seat by 0.4%..[4]

Upon entering Parliament, Castrilli has acted as the shadow minister for Local Government and Regional Development from March 2005 to May 2005.

In 2008 it was reported that Castrilli was linked to an water purification company, Quantum Filtration Medium, that was founded in 2001 while Castrilli was Mayor of Bunbury. Castrilli acted as an advisor to the company during its launch that also allegedly received $400,000 money from a known drug dealer.[5] Castrilli denies knowing that the funds used were from drug dealing and that he only offered advice to the company but had no financial stake or on-going role in the company.[6]
