Quantum magnets are spin systems in which the spins interact via the well known exchange interaction. The field of quantum spin systems or quantum magnetism originated some decades ago. The interaction is purely quantum mechanical and the form of the interaction was derived simultaneously by Heisenberg and Dirac in 1926. The most well known model of interacting quantum spins is the Heisenberg model.
