Burripalem is a village and a mandal in Guntur District of Andhra Pradesh, India. It has a population of 2,800 (2001 census). It is located 6 Kms east from Tenali Town.

Overview

Burripalem has a history of 400 years. Over the years it is well known for its rich legacy of its contribution to movements, films and education, It has produced many great leaders who participated in movements such as Sarvodaya movement, Bhoodan campaign, Library movement. It is also a land of scholars, actors and academicians. Famous actor of Telugu Film Industry Tollywood Krishna is from this village. A movie was also made in the name of this village Burripalem Bullodu.


Geography

Burripalem is located at 16°15′N 80°35′E / 16.25°N 80.58°E / 16.25; 80.58. Burripalem is 6 km from from Tenali Town. It is located 34 km from the sea coast. It is well connected by road transport.

Burripalem Village is just 6 km away from Tenali town. It is well connected to this town through road transport. It hardly takes 12 min by road. People majorly travel by RTC bus, Auto rishaw, Motorcycle or cycle.

Climate

Burripalem is located 34 km from the sea coast. It is generally hot and humid during summer with temperatures ranging between 32-45 C. Winters are milder with fog and temperatures between 15 and 23 C. Heavy rains are experienced between July and November during monsoon time.

Population

At the 2001 Indian census,[1] Burripalem had a population of 2,800. Males constitute 50% of the population and females 50%. Burripalem has an average literacy rate of 76%, higher than the national average of 72.5%: male literacy is 70.5%, and female literacy is 61%.

Economy

The major occupation of the people in this village is mainly agriculture and small scale business. The region around the village has fertile soil irrigated by the Krishna river water and it has three canals irrigating the fields Paledrikaluva, Pathakaluva and Kothakavluva. Major crops include Paddy, Balckgram, Corn, Turmeric), and Sugarcane.

  • There are a good number of famous temples, such as Kanyaka Parameswari temple, Vaikunthapuram (also known as Chinna Tirupathi), Patha Shivalayam, Donga Ramudu Gudi (Near Market), Ramalingeswara Aalayam, Patha Anjaneyaswami gudi, Chitti Anjaneyaswami gudi, Morrispet Shivalayam, Saibaba temple Appalaswami temple, devi gudi in devi chowk, and venugopala swamy temple
  • In the heart of the village a village deity Boddurai was installed surreptitiously in the recent years.
  • Festivals are celebrated on a grand scale throughout the year in Tenali. The most famous being Sri Rama Navami, where the Pandiri or Pandal stretches over the entire main roads in Tenali, attracting a gathering of about 200,000 people each year. Vinayaka Chavathi, Sri Rama Navami and Deepawali are the main festivals. From Ugadi until Rama Navami, all the main streets are decorated with displays of various gods and goddesses. The celebrations continue for ten days. During the Sankranthi festival, Lord Venkateswara's idol along with those of Lakshmi and Padmavati are taken on a decorated boat in one of the Krishna canals. On the festive day of Sivarathri a huge jathara/festival will be celebrated in nearby Siva kshetras viz., Sangam Jagarlamudi, Tsundur and Gowada. Edla pandelu (Bull race) is conducted.
