Atin Bandyopadhyay

Atin Bandyopadhyay, (Template:Lang-bn; anglicised spelling of surname: Banerjee) is a noted writer of Bengali literature. He was born in 1934 in Rainadi, Dhaka. Father: Abhimanyu Bandyopadhyay, mother: Labanyaprabha Devi.

Early life

He spent his childhood in a joint family set-up in the then East Bengal of undivided India and studied in Sonar Gaon Panam School. After the Partition, migrated to India. Passed B. Com in 1956 and subsequently B.T. Took various jobs as a sailor, truck-cleaner, primary school teacher. Also became headmaster of a senior basic school. Settled permanently in Kolkata in 1963. Here also he took on various jobs like factory manager, publication advisor and lastly journalist.

Career as a Writer

The first story of the author was published in the magazine Abasar of Berhampore. He has penned many works since then, but his masterpiece is a three-part trilogy on the Partition: Nilkantha Pakhir Khonje, Aloukik Jalajan and Ishwarer Bagan. Another famous writer of Bengal, Syed Mustafa Siraj has compared Nilkantha Pakhir Khonje, with Greek tragedies and also found it tuned with the core spirit with the Bengali literature like Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay's Pather Panchali.¹

• Bhualka Prize in 1993 for Panchajogini.
• Bibhutibhushan - Smriti Puraskar in 1991.
