The result of the discussion was: Withdrawn, as problematic image has been replaced --ZimZalaBim talk 20:40, 5 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- Unfree screenshot that happens to include a racial slur against Barack Obama in the snippet accompanying the Wikipedia article result. If we're going to make a fair use claim for a screenshot, lets at least pick one that doesn't include vandalism. ZimZalaBim talk 01:28, 3 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- Doh! I think this image should be replaced by an untainted version, rather than deleted. We were hoisted by our own petard. Jehochman Talk 02:28, 3 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- Can someone just
speedy deletethis image? Why wasn't it just removed as soon as the slur became evident, this is just dumb. Verbal chat 22:33, 3 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]- Keep now it has been fixed. I'd have replaced it if I knew how. Verbal chat 09:57, 4 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- Speedy Delete - Bad enough that it's a copyvio, but it's also a doctored result showing a racial slur against a head of state. It captures this act of vandalism (reverted two minutes later by [this edit], and which lead to this indef block of en:user:Dyingdreams. LeadSongDog come howl 03:30, 4 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- How about one of you folks go grab a replacement and just change out the image? Why are people complaining so shrilly? Just fix it. The image was removed from the article already; it's not actually findable, except via this utterly pointless discussion! It would take less time to fix the problem than to complain about it. The result is not "doctored" either. It accurately reflects what the page looked like at that time. It was just dumb luck that the screen capture happened to reflect vandalism. Vandalism is not unheard of on Wikipedia. Jehochman Talk 05:00, 4 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- There, I fixed it. Now please close this pointless discussion. Jehochman Talk 05:09, 4 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- Hold up, don't close it. Now it's no longer vandalism... but it's still a non-free image that isn't being used in an article. So
Delete, still. – Quadell (talk) 05:18, 4 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]- I put the new image back where the vandalized image used to be. I hope that clears things up. Mathsci (talk) 07:39, 4 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- Ah, okay. Used within policy now. Keep. – Quadell (talk) 22:57, 4 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- I put the new image back where the vandalized image used to be. I hope that clears things up. Mathsci (talk) 07:39, 4 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- keep racial slur was taken out, if it's a non-free image then you can just put a Free Use Rationale (FUR) that makes a good justification of why the image is necessary, and it already has one. Also, there is no free replacement because there are no GFDL public search engines (that I know of) --Enric Naval (talk) 22:09, 4 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

- delete the domain www.60degreez.com is currently parked by godaddy, so there is no way to check what the heck this image is, or if the website has released it under a free license or give permission to use it in wikipedia. It seems to be some website promoting something, according to the info in their facebook page[1]. We don't appear to have an article for this website, so there is no place to use it a fair use logo, and it doesn't look notable so I doubt it's worth creating a stub to put it there. --Enric Naval (talk) 22:16, 4 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

- replaceable non-free use image of a living person. 74.204.40.46 (talk) 10:03, 3 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Keep. Illustrates Smith in his longest-running and most notable role to date. The physical appearance of that character was a running gag in the show Are You Being Served?. It's possible that a replacement image of the actor could be found, but not possible to find a free replacement image illustrating the appearance of the character, or Smith's appearance at the time he was most well known for the role.--Clay Collier (talk) 13:03, 8 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]- Change to Delete. - Image is currently a copyvio and mistagged; video game screenshots need to be tagged as fair use. Normally I would have no problem simply doing this myself; however, I don't feel that the image adds much to the article, it's supposed to be a screenshot of the game right when it ceased online capability, but you can't really tell from looking at it. So, delete per WP:NFCC#8. GlassCobra 12:28, 3 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- Speedy Delete File has an improper license - the image is obviously not free. Should be deleted per CSD F3. - Fastily (talk) 05:47, 4 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- Well, I added the screenshot, and clearly got the upload rationale wrong; I'm happy to change it to a "fair use" image if that would help. GlassCobra, as for not being able to tell that it's from the game closing down, did you ever play Tabula Rasa? I only ask because the screenshot shows an epic level of assault on a human base above and beyond anything that had ever been seen before in the game. But even if that justification doesn't work for you, perhaps this image should just be included as a general screenshot, since no other is included on the page? 48states (talk) 22:45, 10 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

- This is an attempt at modifying the iconic Beatles "Yellow Submarine" enough to not be a copyright violation, so it can be used in userboxes. The trouble is, if it's designed to associate a userpage with a trademarked product, it's still a trademark violation. - Why would anyone want to delete a public domain image? (As always, this is not a rhetorical question.) <KF> 21:36, 3 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- Because Wikipedia isn't a miscellaneous collection of images. Anything not useful for building an encyclopedia isn't usually kept around. We tend to make exceptions for files on userpages... but the example below is kind of pushing it. Would you like me to move the image to Wikimedia Commons for you? (Commons is a miscellaneous collection of images.) – Quadell (talk) 23:54, 3 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- I have now added this image to one of the pages in my user space. Does this fact change anything? <KF> 21:41, 3 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was: delete. Image fails WP:NFCC #8. There is no supported commentary that the "working environment" shown was significant to the subject of the article or that the image is a distinct historical moment. Also fails WP:NFCC #1. Visual proof of their collaboration is not necessary. Support for the fact that they collaborated can be conveyed by properly referenced text. -Nv8200p talk 13:04, 12 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

- Non-free image used to show something that can adequately be described with (free) text. We don't need an image to understand that two people worked together one time. Jay32183 (talk) 23:05, 3 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- Keep. Image adds distinct value and understanding by showing a particular working environment, including such details as an early Macintosh computer (Adams was an early Mac advocate, and Infocom made all its games available for Mac at a time when this was not standard practice). Additionally, since Adams is deceased the likelihood of a free equivalent being found is infinitesimal. —Josiah Rowe (talk • contribs) 23:31, 3 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- But what can't be understood with text alone? I don't need to see "they used a Macintosh" to understand it, reading it is sufficient. WP:NFCC#1 doesn't just mean replaceable by another image, but replaceable by any free means. Sometimes "no free image" means "no image". Jay32183 (talk) 03:06, 4 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- The Mac was just one example of the details of the working environment, showing one particular moment in the development of the computer gaming industry. The value of an image over text for illuminating a distinct historical moment is difficult to quantify but real. Heck, I'd say that an argument could be used for including the image in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (computer game). —Josiah Rowe (talk • contribs) 18:18, 4 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- Again, you've shown nothing that can't be explained with text alone. This image is purely decorative. I gain zero understanding by seeing it. I would also argue against it in the video game article. Don't need an image to understand who designed the game. In both articles this situation is free image or no image. Since there isn't a free image, it's no image. Jay32183 (talk) 06:01, 5 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

- Keep. Per Josiah Rowe. Unless there is a huge copyright problem with the image, it adds value to the article, despite all the talk about the use of a Macintosh. It shows the working environment and the two people who worked on the game. — Frecklefσσt | Talk 14:47, 4 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- Keep per Josiah. A picture's worth a thousand words, after all. --BlueSquadronRaven 16:17, 4 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- So replace the non-free image with a thousand free words. – Quadell (talk) 23:05, 4 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- I have so far not seen one good argument as to why this image, with a fair use rationale, is not acceptable. Feel free to give one any time as opposed to simply arguing for its replacement with text. --BlueSquadronRaven 23:27, 4 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- WP:NFCC#1 says that if information could "be adequately conveyed by text without using the non-free content at all" then we can't use the image. "Arguing for its replacement with text", as you put it, is valid -- if it can be adequately replaced by text, our policy won't let us use the image. Sorry. – Quadell (talk) 23:44, 4 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- I respectfully disagree that this, or indeed most, images can be adequately replaced with text, particularly images of specific people. The Fair Use rationale on this image is accurate and sufficient. --BlueSquadronRaven 20:39, 5 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- Then you don't understand WP:NFCC or the concept of a free encyclopedia. We avoid non-free content whenever possible. Unless you can show it is absolutely necessary, which you have not, the image should not be used. There isn't anything in the article that I can't understand without the image. We already have a free image of Adams and Meretzky is still alive. That destroys your "specific people argument", even though without the picture anyone can still understand that the two worked together. The rationale actually claims the image is being used only to illustrate the collaboration, which again, is understood without an image. Jay32183 (talk) 06:27, 6 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

- Delete, this non-free image gives no specific information that can't be adequately conveyed by text. The "working environment" isn't mentioned in the article. Either way, it's not needed to fully understand the subject of the article. We need to be extremely careful using BBC images, since the BBC is (among other things) a news organization, and news organizations can quite plausibly call us competitors, using their images to compete with them. – Quadell (talk) 23:05, 4 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- Delete as eminently replaceable image. Used for decoration only and does not add one bit to readers' understanding of the subject. Also fails WP:NFCC#2. Stifle (talk) 17:00, 7 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- Keep - I hate reading bios that don't have frequent and diverse pictures of the subject (so-called "decoration"). This picture is interesting and adds flavour. 91.106.167.147 (talk) 09:01, 9 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
