Ever since I was really little I've wanted to do it. But my mom didn't want to get me into it too young. So, it's just been something I've always wanted to do.[13]

Acting career

2001-2003: Early career

During her childhood, Roberts spent a lot of time on the sets of the films in which her aunt, Julia Roberts was starring. These experiences sparked a desire in Roberts, from the age of five, to follow her father and aunts into the film industry.[11] Robert's said in an interview that: "Well I’ve been on sets since I was a little kid, and I’ve grown up around it and its something I’ve always wanted to do so it seemed pretty natural to me.[14] Although her mother initially wanted her to have a normal childhood, Roberts made her acting debut in Ted Demme's 2001 drama Blow — the first movie she ever auditioned for — at the age of nine. In the film she portrayed Kristina Jung, the daughter of Johnny Depp's character, cocaine smuggler George Jung. As the film is rated R, her mother reportedly would not allow Roberts to see it before she turns eighteen. Director Ted Demme produced a tape for her that featured only the scenes she appeared in.[15] During her burgeoning career, Roberts attended the Archer School for Girls, in Los Angeles, California.

In 2001, Roberts also had a role in Leif Tilden's 10-minute short bigLove (which also starred her future stepfather, Kelly Nickels), and was an uncredited extra in some scenes featuring her aunt Julia (Roberts) in America's Sweethearts.[16] She went on to appear in smaller roles in two family films: in 2002's Grand Champion, as the sister of the main character Buddy (Jacob Fisher); and in 2003's Spymate, as the kidnapped daughter of former secret agent Mike Muggins (Chris Potter), who tries to rescue her with the help of a spy monkey. Grand Champion had a brief theatrical release in August 2004,[17] while Spymate was not released until February 2006, when it was given a theatrical run in Canada,[18] followed by its DVD release in April 2006. In August 2003, Roberts was scheduled to shoot an independent film called Daisy Winters, starring as the title character, alongside Rachel Weisz.[19] However, the film, which would have been Roberts' first leading role, never began shooting due to financial problems.

Roberts and the main cast of Unfabulous in 2004

Roberts became a teen idol at the age of thirteen, starring as the lead character Addie Singer in the Nickelodeon series Unfabulous, which debuted in September 2004. Nickelodeon had wanted to cast her for the role from the beginning, and the teen sitcom earned Roberts a Teen Choice Award nomination and several Young Artist Award nominations.[20] The series became the network's most-watched programs[21] and was quickly recommissioned for a second season. The television show was also one of the most-watched programs in the United States among children between the age of 9 and 14.[22] The show aired for three seasons from 2004-2007 and aired 42 episodes.[23] The third season ended on December 16, 2007.[23]

The second TV Movie premiered on December 16, 2007 The Best Trip Ever centers on Addie's prom and how tries to stop Geena and Zack from becoming a couple, thou Addie's boryfriend Jake is trying to get them together which causes conflicts between the four friends.[24]

In 2004 Robert's guest-starred in an episode of another popular Nickelodeon series Drake and Josh, Robert's was in the episode "Honor Council" where she played Addie a judge in a trial to see if Drake should be found guilty of putting he's teachers car in the classroom and should be suspended of all school activity's for the year. Because her character on Unfabulous writes songs and plays guitar, Nickelodeon soon considered a career in music for Roberts as well, following the lead of other actress'/pop singers such as Hilary Duff and Lindsay Lohan.[25] Robert's said that one of the things she enjoys about Unfabulous is: "It's just so much fun. Everyone, like me and the kids and everyone, all get along and we're all really good friends. Also I get to pick out a lot of my own clothes on the show which is really fun.[13] Robert's also said of the sow that one of her favorite episodes is: "I do. I really had a lot of fun filming the episode where Addie directs the school play. It kind of turns into a disaster and she gets stressed out. It's just a really funny episode, I liked it a lot. I had fun."[13]

2006-2008: Aquamarine and Nancy Drew

Roberts in 2008

In 2006, Roberts returned to the big screen, starring alongside Sara Paxton and singer JoJo in Aquamarine. They became good friends while filming. Robert's won a 2007 Young Artist Award for Best Supporting Young Actress in a Feature Film for her role as claire in the film.[26] The film Aquamarine took #5 place at the box office on its opening weekend making 8 million[27] and the film to-date has grossed over 23 million worldwide.[27] Additionally the film has grossed 42 million dollars in DVD rentals and DVD sales. The budget was $12 million.[28]

Following Aquamarine, she was scheduled to star in Camp Couture (produced by her mother, Kelly Cunningham)[29] and Bras and Broomsticks (based on the book of the same name by Sarah Mlynowski),[30] but neither film went into full production.[31] In early 2006, Roberts finished shooting her title role in Nancy Drew. The film was released to theaters on June 15, 2007. The film made grossed over 7 million in its opening weekend and has to-date grossed over 30 million worldwide.[32] Thou the film was not well received by critics, the film currently holds a 49% on Rotten Tomatoes and 54% on Metacritic.[33] Robert's said of playing the character Nancy Drew that: "Yeah, if I make something appeals to me it's kind of challenging, but I mean I read the Nancy Drew script and I loved it. I loved the character, and the whole idea."[34] Robert's also of the film that: "Yeah, Nancy Drew was created in like the 30s so she's very old. But in the movie her character stays basically the same as she was in book, but they just updated the story kind of around her."[34] Robert's also said of doing a mystery film that: "Yeah, I love mysteries and I love the whole detective idea and I think it's so fun. "[34] Robert's also related to the character by saying: "Oh I mean we're both ambitious and determined and also very curious but I mean she's much more of a neat freak than I am."[34]

On May 15, 2006, Roberts was featured on MTV's Punk'd with pop singer Teddy Geiger. In December 2007 Roberts began filming Hotel For Dogs in various parts of Los Angeles, California. In 2008 Robert's had her VoiceOver debut when she voiced the english version of the character Wilma in the CGI-animated holiday family film "The Flight Before Christmas".[35][1][35] Robert's starred alongside comedian Norm Macdonald. The film was released direct-to-dvd in the U.S. on October 28, 2008. Robert's said of her role in the film that: "It’s an animated movie, which is great because I’ve never done voice-over work. For this it was just me reading with myself, which is funny because as an actor, I’m used to working with other people. I do the voice for a little, white ferret named Wilma. She’s very sassy and one of the characters that Niko the reindeer meets during his search for his father—he thinks his dad might be one of Santa’s reindeer. It’s a really fun movie, and I actually got to sing in it."[36][37][35] Robert's also starred in Spymate as Amelia Muggins, the daughter of the lead character. The film was released in Canada in a thearetical run in 2006 and was later released direct-to-dvd in the US on Aril 11 2006[38]

2009-present: Hotel For Dogs and Lymelife

In 2009, Roberts starred alongside Jake T. Austin in Hotel for Dogs,[39] based on the novel by Lois Duncan. The film Hotel For Dogs center around Andy and her younger brother Bruce(Jake T. Austin) trying to find home's for local stray dogs they find in their neighborhood with the help of their friends. The film premiered at The Pacific Theater in Los Angeles, California on January 15, 2009. The film was released to theaters on January 16, 2009 and took #5 place in its opening weekend with over 17 million. The film has to-date grossed over 114 million dollars at the box office and received generally mixed reviews from critics, and the film currently holds a 45% rotten rating on Rotten Tomatoes.[40][41] was released on DVD April 28, 2009.[42] Roberts starred as the lead in the movie Wild Child,[43] about a rebellious teen from Malibu sent to a boarding school in England. The movie ended production in late 2007, and was released on August 15, 2008 in the United Kingdom. The movie will be released in the U.S. on May 9, 2009.[44] Emma described her character as “pretty much your typical spoiled-brat Malibu socialite who gets shipped off to British boarding school.” [45] Robert's also described the film and her character as being: It’s about a Malibu princess who isn’t getting along with her dad so well because she behaves pretty badly, so he ships her off to boarding school in England. It’s a very cute story and I am so excited because I get to shoot in London all summer.[46] Robert's also said of the reason why she choose the to pay Poppy in Wild Child is that: "I love the movies like Mean Girls and Clueless and this really reminded me of that and I’d never really played a character like that before – I always played like the girl next door, so it was cool to get to play someone completely different."[47] Robert's also said of the character that: "I'm playing a bad, mean girl who's at a boarding school in England.", also that "Well the character is very sassy and I can sometimes get sassy a little bit." and on playing the character that: "Yeah I'm so excited. Because I've never done it before so it's going to be really fun."[34]

Roberts will also appear in the indie movie Lymelife with Alec Baldwin in New Jersey, which was premiered at the 2008 Toronto International Film Festival, on September 8, and was later screened at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival. Roberts said that Lymelife is “kind of like American Beauty meets The Ice Storm.” [45] In the Teen Vogue April 2009 issue, she explains her reasoning for doing the film, “Some people look at me and think, She’s just Julia Roberts’s niece. So I wanted to do something smaller and edgier, something that would show I really am an actress.” [45] Robert's also described her character in the film Lymelife and said of her that : " Adrianna really is your typical girl. I think everyone knew an Adrianna type of girl growing up, and I could relate to her just because I remember being at her age, like fifteen, sixteen, where you're kind of frustrated because you don't know if you want to be older or if you have to act your age, or if you're supposed to act sexy or cute or what. I could definitely relate to that aspect of her."[48] Robert's also said that she choose to do the role because: "Yeah, that was part of it. I had just finished Hotel for Dogs, and I wanted to do something just completely different. So the script [for Lymelife] kind of just came out of nowhere, and I read it and I really liked it. I met Derick and I really, really liked him. For the most part the cast was set, and I thought the cast they had chosen was brilliant. It was something I really wanted to be a part of; when you want to be a part of something like that, you'll do whatever they want you to do." Robert's also said: "I just really loved the material, and I loved the people that were involved with the script, and I just really wanted to be a part of it. I'm 18 now, so I think that it's appropriate and time to do something more mature."[49] Roberts said in a interview with Vanity Fair that : I’d love to do another role similar to my character in Lymelife, just because it was such a fun character to get to play with. I’d love to do a thriller, and I’d love to do a role like Kate Hudson’s in Almost Famous, because that’s my favorite movie. I just want to keep trying new things. I want to constantly be surprising people with different roles.[50] Robert's has also said that she'd: "Yeah, I’d love to do more. I want to do a movie like The Royal Tenenbaums because I watched it for the millionth time last night and realized how much I love it. I love Gwyneth Paltrow’s character, Margot.[36]

" I just feel like with independent movies… they're really free to do whatever they want. They're not afraid to make a statement about anything, and there's not a huge studio behind them making sure that everything is wholesome and politically correct and all that. In mainstream movies, they want everything to make perfect sense, and in independents, it can be all over the place. People can just have fun with it."

Robert's on her opinion of independent movies - 2009[51]

Future projects

Roberts is set to be reunited with Nancy Drew director Andrew Fleming on both Rodeo Gal[6] and a Nancy Drew sequel,[7] although the latter has been put on hold.[8] She was also selected to play the lead role in James C. The album peaked at #46 on Billboard's Top Heatseekers chart.[59] In September, two promotional singles were released from the album: "I Wanna Be" and "Dummy". The album includes several original songs (among them "Dummy" and "I Wanna Be", both of which were also released as music videos, "I Have Arrived", and "This Is Me", which was co-written by Roberts), as well as some of Addie's songs from the first season, including "Punch Rocker" and "New Shoes" (both from the episode "The Party"), "94 Weeks (Metal Mouth Freak)" (from "The Bar Mitzvah") and "Mexican Wrestler" (which had previously appeared on Jill Sobule's 2000 album Pink Pearl and in the episode "The 66th Day" from Unfabulous).

Heather Phares from Allmusic praised her "fresh" and "genuine voice", and also claimed that the album was "filled with, sweet idealistic songs sung by a young girl who sounds like a young girl instead of a pop tart".[60]

During the same year, Roberts recorded "If I Had It My Way" for the soundtrack of the 2005 Disney film Ice Princess. In 2006, Roberts covered the song "Island of the Sun", which was originally recorded by Weezer in 2001; she recorded the song for Aquamarine's soundtrack, a film here she starred as one of the leads.

Roberts said in a 2007 interview:

"Right now I am focusing on movies, I am getting ready to start a new movie this summer so that is taking a lot of my time. I think when I am a little bit older it is definitely something I’d like to pursue."[61]

Roberts said of continuing her music career: "No, because it seems like everyone records an album now. It doesn’t seem very special anymore."[36] She stated in an interview with PARADE magazine:

“My musical career is indefinitely on hold. I don’t like people who become like ‘actor slash singer.’ I think people should be one or the other because usually you’re not going to be great at both. You’re going to better at one, so you might as well stick to the one you’re good at. I’m going for acting.”[citation needed]

Robert's has cited actress Anne Hathaway as her role model and has stated Rupert Grint is one of her favorite actors.[12] Robert's also stated and was quoted saying that: "My most prized possession, though, is an autographed picture of Rupert Grint, who plays Ron Weasley in the Harry Potter films"[12] Roberts has also stated and been quoted saying that she is a big fan of Gwyneth Paltrow, Robert's had said: "I've Netflixed all of the Gwyneth Paltrow movies. I'm a huge fan of hers. She's kind of my idol at the moment. I really like Kirsten Dunst. She did a lot of cool, fun teen movies, and she's also done some serious roles. I like her style, and I think she seems pretty interesting. -- on actors that inspire her"[12] Robert's is close friends with Aquamarine co-star Joanna 'JoJo' Levesque and good friends with felllow nickolodeon star(s) Devon Werkhesier and Jamie-Lynn Spears. It's really twisted but really cool. I think he's amazing. My favorite book is The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky."[62] Robert's has also stated that one of her idol's is singer/actress Joanna 'JoJo' Levesque, whom Robert's co-starred with in Aquamarine. On her father, Eric Roberts side she has English, Irish, Scottish, German, and Swedish ancestry.[12] In her April 2009 Teen Vogue Interview Robert's was qouted saying:

"Nick, I love you. Sorry about the quote"[63]

Robert's said in an interview with San Francisco Chronicle about her Lymelife co-star Rory Culkin, that: “[Rory Culkin and I] are good friends, so it wasn’t really that awkward. We talked about it before and that made it much easier. Rory is really a great guy. I mean, I was definitely nervous. I kind of felt uncomfortable, but at the same time I think it worked for the scene because it is supposed to be our first time, and we are supposed to not know what we are doing.”[64] Robert's said in an interview with OK! Magazine that she feels that her upcoming 2009 film Lymelife is her transition to more adult roles, Robert's had said:

“This is my first role that’s a transition to more adult roles. The script was so well-written, and such a perfect part for me to transition from teen star to more adult films. It’s hard to find great material that’s not too over-the-top edgy, but still shows you in a different light.”[65]

“No, I failed my driving test and then my permit expired. And then I failed my permit test when I retook it. I didn’t know you had to stop before going right on red, so I just swung around the corner really quickly. (laughs)”[66]

Robert's also drew the media 's attention in an interview when she praised Anne Hathaway(who Robert's has stated is a role model to her) and had compared Hathaway's career to Lindsay Lohan's, it had been noted that when Robert's was discussing the two's career than she seemed to have as some put "dissed Lohan's career". Robert's stated

"I just think it's very thin ice you're walking on, to make the transition from child actor to adolescence. Because - you know, so many people just mess it up, and they do things that are so outrageous. And it's like - the whole point is, like, Anne Hathaway. The fact that she was in Princess Diaries, like, you'd never think about that. Whereas, like, Lindsay Lohan, you still know that she was in Freaky Friday and The Parent Trap, and it's hard to take her seriously. So that's why I really like - like, Anne Hathaway is a great example."[67]

Robert's said in an interview on The Bunny Hunt Show (dated January 19, 2009 ), while promoting Hotel For Dogs that, on popular reality shows: “I started watching The City which I think is better. But The Hills I don’t really understand because I think everyone knows it is fake except for LC [Lauren Conrad] because she is the only one crying in every episode. I feel bad I’m like, ‘She is always crying and no one else is. Maybe she doesn’t know it’s fake.” [68][69] In an interview on Entertainment Tonight, while promoting Hotel For Dogs Robert's said that she - as of January 17, 2009 has a dog. I love fashion and I always go on UK’s TopShop.com to go with my depression that there is no Top Shop in America.” Robert's said of her favorite designers: “I love Chanel, Elizabeth & James and Juicy Couture.” Robert's has said that her personal style is: "Pretty casual but today I dressed up so I like to wear dresses, I love to wear Juicy Couture and jeans and a shirt and Alice and Olivia too."[71] Robert's had said that she is a big fan of the character Serena van der Woodsen from the Gossip Girl TV series.[71] Robert's has appeared on various magazines which include as of April 2009, the April 2009 Teen Vogue, August 2008 Vanity Fair(Robert's shared the cover with Blake Lively, Kristen Stewart, and Amanda Seyfried), Teen July 2007, Girls Life June 2007, Teen Vogue May 2007, and Elle Girl May 2006.[72] Robert's has also appeared as part of Teen Vogue’s Best Dressed list multiple times, including June 2007, September 2008, December 2008, February 2009, and March 2009, alongside the likes of Taylor Momsen, Vanessa Hudgens and Emma Watson. Robert's said that some of her favorite movies are:I loved Juno and Little Miss Sunshine. All those people. The Veronicas are really good, they are my new favorite band, I love them."[13] Robert's said in an interview that: "I just always loved being on sets. I loved the whole idea of getting to play different characters and getting to tell different stories. I just loved it and had so much fun with it. So ever since I was younger visiting my aunt's set and my dad's set I've always wanted to be an actress."[34]
