Production
The series is produced by It's a Laugh Productions and Mantis Productions in association with Disney Channel. The pilot was filmed in 2007 but because of the 2007–2008 Writers Guild of America strike, the series was put on hold. The original shooting date had been set in January 2009, but was pushed back to September 2009.[7] The series premiered on Disney Channel on May 2, 2009, and became available on demand starting May 25, 2009 [8]
JONAS is the first live-action DCOS since Phil of the Future to not be filmed in front of a live audience, or have a laugh track.[9] The series is set in New Jersey and shot in Los Angeles. They live in an old firehouse that has been converted into a home.[1]
Development
The original story line for the series was entitled J.O.N.A.S, an acronym which stood for "Junior Operatives Networking As Spies". The original concept had been about the Jonas Brothers living a double life as spies.[10] Chelsea Staub described it as, "like The Monkees and a little of bit of Mr. & Mrs. Smith. There's going to be fun action sequences and still be a sitcom."[11]
