The 40 dates back to the 1950s, and originally ran from Wanstead to Herne Hill.
The 40 bus route initially ran from Wanstead Station to Camberwll Green(Mon - Sats) and was extended to Herne Hill(Post Office)
on Sundays.Originally serviced by RT's on weekdays, these routes continued until the introduction of RML's on Sundays& Bank Holidays in the mid '60's when the route was extended to Norwood Junction. During the late 1970's an intermediate termininating point was Aldgate.
In 1994 the Southern terminus was switched from Herne Hill to Dulwich, The northern terminus being Blackwall DLR station . With the opening of the Jubilee Line Extension in 1999 the route was withdrawn between Blackwall and Aldgate.
