I'd suggest that the name of this article be changed. A lot of the weapons that may be detected by these systems ae not classified as guns. Mortars and shoulder fired rockets are not guns, but are detected by several different systems. Nik.martin 21:14, 5 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Temporal Pattern Gunshot Recognition Systems Category

Sberger11604 (I assume Steven Berger from Safety Dynamics), are you implying that your gunshot location system is *not* an acoustical detection system- and thus warrants its own category? There are numerous mentions of both "acoustics" and "sound" in both your "Temporal Pattern Recognition System" description, and Safety Dynamics' website.Drewery 01:13, 26 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

There is no implication that the SENTRI gunshot detection or recognition product is not acoustic. It is definitely a system that receives acoustic signals and performs signal analysis to identify a gunshot v. everything else. It deserves its own category because of the unique approach of the signal analysis, which mimics the functions of the human brain through neural networks to identify a gunshot by its temporal pattern. This approach can also be used to identify vehicle engines, footsteps, and chain-link fence disturbance, for example. The Lab for Neural Dynamics at USC applies this approach to develop pulsatile sound and security breach sound recognition capability. Typically, this approach returns a higher rate of recognition, especially in urban environments where buildings can adversely effect the path of shockwaves, or in environments with high noise. This same concept drives research performed at the Theodore W. Berger Labs at USC for the purpose of developing neural prostheses. See http://www.neural-prosthesis.com. So if we are to take Dr. Berger at his word, then we should put his invention underneath acoustic systems instead of calling it out as a first-level sensing modality akin to "acoustic" or "optical." I just did that. Also, there's a section down below about a specific vendor (ShotSpotter) that surely must have come from their website--took that out.
