Peter Cianchette

Peter Cianchette is the 56th United States Ambassador to Costa Rica. He was sworn in on May 8, 2008, after being confirmed unanimously by the United States Senate on April 29, 2008.

Private career

Ambassador Peter Cianchette has more than 20 years of business and public service experience, and was most recently a partner in the Maine private investment firm, CHK Capital Partners, LLC, and president of one of its portfolio companies, SeptiTech, Inc. He was owner and president of The Cianchette Group, a public affairs management and business consulting firm, based in South Portland, Maine.

Prior to this, Ambassador Cianchette served as Chief Operating Officer and Executive Vice-President of Pierce Atwood Consulting. He had previously founded Cianchette Enterprises, Inc., which owned and operated Initial Staffing Services, a successful employee staffing, recruiting and placement company. Ambassador Cianchette has also served as a senior executive in one of Maine’s top manufacturing companies, the Dragon Products Company, a leading manufacturer of cement and concrete.

Public career

A former two-term State Representative (1996-2000) and Republican candidate for Governor of Maine in 2002, Ambassador Cianchette made economic development a cornerstone of his policies.

Private life

A dedicated community and civic activist, Ambassador Peter Cianchette served as a Director on the Boards of the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Maine and Maine Education Services. He also served on the Republican National Committee and as a Maine Health Corporator. He has served as Director of the Greater Portland Big Brothers/Big Sisters, the Boy Scouts of America/Pine Tree Council, the Portland Chamber of Commerce and the Southern Maine Community College Foundation and YES! to Youth. He has also served as President of the Maine Better Transportation Association.

Ambassador Cianchette earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration at the University of Maine. He currently resides in San Jose, Costa Rica with his wife Carolyn and their two children, Evan and Maria.
