The 2009 Norwegian Premier League season is the sixty-fifth season of top-tier football in Norway. The competition, which is also named Tippeligaen for sponsorship reasons, began on 15 March and is scheduled to end in November. Stabæk are the defending champions, having won their first ever League Championship in 2008. Due to the league expanding from 14 to 16 teams,[1] three teams were promoted from the First Division at the end of the 2008 season. Those teams were champions Odd Grenland, runners-up Sandefjord and third-placed Start. The last spot was taken by Aalesund after winning a two-legged play-off match against Sogndal.

Relegation and promotion to 2010 season

At the end of the season, the two last teams will be relegated directly to Adeccoligaen, and will be replaced by the winners and runners-up of the Adeccoligaen who will be directly promoted.

Four teams will enter a play-off for the last Premier League spot in the 2010 season. These are:

  • A) 14th placed team in the Premier League
  • B) Third placed team in the Adeccoligaen
  • C) Fourth placed team in the Adeccoligaen
  • D) Fifth placed team in the Adeccoligaen

Team A will host team D, and team B will host team C for a single match. The winners of each match will then play a two-legged play-off for the last Premier League spot in 2010.[2]
