Meelick Eyrecourt is the one of oldest hurling clubs in Ireland. Founded in 1884 the club was mainly formed around a Hurling tradition with evidence that Hurling had been played in the parish for centuries before. Complimentary to this is the fact that the club competed in the first All Ireland Final of 1884 playing Thurles of Tipperary. The club lost this final but there was evidence of unorthodox tactics by the Tipp club as the Duped Meelick into thinking they were not attending where Meelick's panel retired to a bar in Birr, where the final was being held, for a couple of hours until Thurles turned up and duly defeated Meelick 1-1 0 0-0.

Members of the Meelick-Eyrecourt GAA Club are made upof the Parish of Meelick, Eyrecourt and Clonfert. With, the once bustling, Eyrecourt being the focal point of the Parish. Many Club men have won All Ireland medals in both football and hurling. Galway has never won a hurling All Ireland without a Meelick-Eyrecourt man on the team, two of Galways greatest hurlers Billy Duffy and Joe Salmon wore the blue of Meelick Eyrecourt.

Joe Salmon was named on the Galway team of the Millennium at Mid-Field and was joined by Sean Silke who was named at Centre-Back!

Sean Silke and Brendan Lynskey are the holder of All-Star awards, winner of All-Ireland winners medel from the great period in the 80's.

Jack Lucas is another former stalwart of the club and was unlucky to miss out on the 1980 team due to injury!

The club last contested the County Cup in 1980!!
