Patterdale Terriers are tough little terriers bred mostly in England for killing fox and rabbits. In America they are often used as miniature gun dogs for hunting any type of game. According to breed standard at several all-breed registeries (including the NKC, UKC, FCI, and CKC), this terrier is to be no more than 15 inches tall and should weigh less than 18 pounds. They are allowed in black, grizzle, chocolate, and black-and-tan. However, this breed is rarely shown and breeders are more concerned with practicality of the breed rather than outward appearances. Another name for this breed is "Black Fell Terrier."
