Ubuntu Netbook Remix (UNR) is a 'remix' of the standard Ubuntu Desktop release to enable it to work better on netbooks or devices with small screens and is optimized for use with the Intel Atom processor. The packages that make up UNR will work on the respective 8.04 (Hardy Heron), 8.10 (Intrepid Ibex) or 9.04 (Jaunty Jackalope) installation. Canonical, the company that is behind Ubuntu, is collaborating with Moblin project to ensure optimization for lower hardware requirements and higher battery life.[3]. UNR runs on popular models such as the Acer Aspire One and the ASUS Eee PC.
Installation
Ubuntu Netbook Remix is distributed by Flash image files, called IMGs. To install UNR you need to download the .IMG file at [1]. Then write the IMG file to a USB Flash Drive.[4]
Packages That Make Up UNR
go-home-applet: a super-charged 'show-desktop' applet which, in addition to showing the desktop, allows users to drag-and-drop files/folders/urls on to it, to create new favorite items in the launcher.
window-picker-applet: a space-conservative window-picker applet, which allows switching and closing windows from the panel.
maximus: a window-management daemon (makes sure windows are maximized etc)
human-netbook-theme: Human with panel themeing
ume-launcher: the desktop-launcher which takes the place of Nautilus (file manager). Replicates the functionality of Applications/Places/System, with added support for a user-defined favorites category.
desktop-switcher: Allows easy desktop-mode switching between Netbook mode and Classic mode (Ubuntu 8.04 default set-up)
Variants
Dell Ubuntu Netbook Remix is built specifically for the hardware profile of the Inspiron Mini 9, and is also available for the Inspiron Mini 12. It includes a custom built interface and launcher as well as non-free codecs such as MPEG4 and MP3. It began shipping on September 22, 2008.[5]
