Assembla is a collaborative project management service for open-source and commercial software. The service rents development applications to other companies online,[1] reducing the cost of software development.[2]
History
Assembla has been based in Needham, Massachusetts since 2003.[3] The company officially formed in 2005, headed by Andy Singleton, creator of PowerSteering Software,[4] using a distributed agile process to link employees from multiple locations.[5]
In Oct 2008, Assembla began charging for some of its services.[6]
In March 2009, Assembla partnered with online workteam tool provider oDesk, providing users joint access to the companies' services.[7]
Product
Workspaces hosted on Assembla feature project management software elements such as task management, issue tracking, subversion repositories and scrum meetings.[8] The service caters mostly to software developers, featuring subversion, Git and Mercurial source source control[9], but one third of its tools serve general collaboration tools such as wikis and message boards.[10] It hosts its toolset within the Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud.[6]
Users
170,000 people use Assembla.[11] Most belong to small companies.[12] Prominent projects using Assembla for various aspects of managing their development include:
