Woodleigh School, North Yorkshire

Woodleigh School is an English independent preparatory school for boys and girls aged 3 to 13, located in the village of Langton, North Yorkshire. Currently there are 120 pupils, a mixture of day pupils and boarders.

The school is situated at Langton Hall, historically the seat of the Norcliffe family. It was founded in 1929 in Hessle, near Hull, by the late Arthur England, grandfather of the present headmaster. There were no other boys’ preparatory schools in the area at the time. By 1930, two years after the school had launched, there were 25 pupils. During the war Woodleigh moved to Firby hall near Westow village in 1939.

In 1946 it moved to its present location at Langton Hall, south of Malton, in the Yorkshire Wolds. The hall is owned by Howard-Vyse family. Previously the Guards' Royal Division had used Langton Hall during the WW2 while preparing for D-Day and the house had been visited by the Royal family and Winston Churchill.

Woodleigh runs regular bus services to the surrounding towns and villages. The pupils are predominantly drawn from Malton, Norton-on-Derwent, Pickering, Driffield, Beverley, Scarborough, Filey, Seamer, Sherburn, Nafferton, Stamford Bridge, Pocklington and York.

In January 2007 a music teacher at the school was convicted for having sex with a 15 year old girl.[1]

Woodleigh School is a member of CReSTeD, The Council for the Registration of Schools Teaching Dyslexic Pupils. [2]

Woodleigh School is part of the York Boarding Schools Group[3]

Woodleigh has a top-ten ranking on IndependentSchools.com,[4] which ranks the best independent and preparatory schools in the United Kingdom by means of independent reviews and rating.
