Entenmann's
Entenmann's, is a company that manufactures and delivers sweet baked goods[1]. The company offers dessert cakes, donuts, ultimates, cookies, loaf breads, pies, club packs, singles, cereal bars, little bites, Enter-mini’s products, as well as Danish, crumb cakes, and buns. In the last few years they have added designer coffee flavors along with scented candles to their product line to broaden their saleable goods. William Entenmann learned the love of baking from his father in the family bakery business in Stuttgart, Germany. In 1898, William Entenmann and his family moved to America to follow his dream of being an entrepreneur in the bakery business. After some time working in the bakery field, William began experimenting with different recipes and soon quite his job and started his own bakery business in Brooklyn, New York, called Entenmann’s[2]. In the early years, William delivered the bread door to door by horse and carriage, later deciding to sell to to local markets. Today, the Entenmann’s brand has over 100 baked goods and is currently, owned by a Canadian firm, George Weston Limited founded in 1882, which is located in Toronto, Ontario Canada. [3] There have only been a few lawsuits filed against Entenmann's, but none have been carried out. Krispy Kreme filed a lawsuit and eventually they dropped the suit due to the opinions of their shareholders[4]
History
Entenmann's is a company that is over 100 years old and originated in New York. In the 1800s, William Entenmann immigrated to New York in the United States of America. William learned the trade of baking from his father in Stuttgart, Germany and used his acquired skills to work in a bakery in the United States, eventually opening his own bakery in 1898 on Rogers Avenue in Brooklyn.[1][2] Later, William moved his bakery to Bay Shore, Long Island. Home-delivery was a substantial part of the bakery that William owned, eventually turning into 30 home delivery routes by the time his son, William Jr., took over the bakery. [1] While William Jr. headed the bakery, it flourished; Frank Sinatra was a weekly customer. William Jr. passed away in 1951 of a heart attack, leaving the bakery to his wife Martha and their sons. The family decided to phase out bread, focus on pastries and cakes, and start supplying grocery stores as opposed to home delivering. In 1959 the Entenmann family invented the “see-through” cake box that is used by many today [5]. In 1961 the business grew, with new bakeries and factories in Bay Shore, New Jersey and Connecticut. Plans to expand nationally stalled in 1970. Entenmann's Bakery, with the assistance of new product consultants at Calle & Company reformulated heavier New England style baked goods into lighter offerings more suitable for hotter, more humid test markets such as Miami, Florida and Atlanta, Georgia. Entenmann's successful national expansion quickly followed suit. In 1972, Entenmann's started to sell chocolate chip cookies and has since sold more than 620 million cookies [5]. Since it’s first opening in 1898, Entenmann's has been selling “all butter loaf cake” and sold more than 700 million to date. Today, Entenmann's is owned by George Weston Bakeries; other GWB holdings include companies such as Thomas, Brownberry, Boboli, Arnold, Freihofer’s, and Stroehmann [6].
Products
Entenmann’s has been famous for their freshly and deliciously baked donuts, loaf cakes, pies, Danish, and cookies; but they have decided to add a more colorful and fun line with their baked sweets, Enten-mini’s. They have added seven more cakes, brownies and deserts that are packed in smaller servings and they have made three mini products with an eye-catching rainbow logo for kids [7].
For the busy people, they have cereal bars and On The Go products that are individually packed for convenience. Also, for the health conscious, there’s 100 Calorie Little Bites. A little bag of healthy 100-calorie snack is good for people trying to control their calorie intake [8].
In 2007, Entenmann's has added a new line of coffee products into the company. Coffee Holding Co., Inc. made a three year licensing agreement with Entenmann's Products, Inc. which gives them the rights to nationally sell and produce coffee that are branded Entemann's. Being associated with freshly baked bread and pastries, Coffee Holding Co. is expecting high consumer demands once Entenmann's coffee hits the market. Coffee Holding Co.is a family operated business. It's been distributing lots of coffee varieties for over thirty years and is remaining profitable regardless of the economy [9].
After being able to establish in other food classes, Entenmann's decided to license their first non-edible product - scented candles. Entenmann's coffee cake, all-butter loaf cake and raspberry Danish scented candles hit the markets on September 2008 and were available at Rite Aid and Giant Eagle stores. Other scents such as pumpkin pie and warm gingerbread were added for the holidays and Chocolate-chip cookie will debut on Spring 2009. According to executive vice president and CEO of The Joester Loria Group, Entenmann's licensing and merchandising agent Joanne Loria, "It's a seamless fit with a core brand. It's another extension of the experiential appeal of Entenmann's products"[10].
Lawsuits and Food Safety
Entenmann's is a much respected and well known company. Throughout the 101 years of Entenmann’s existence, they have had one lawsuit and no known food safety complaints [11]. In 2004, Krispy Kreme decided to sue Entenmanns’s saying that Krispy Kream was the only one that can call their donuts “original glazed," even though Krispy Kreme did not have a copyright on it. Also, in that same lawsuit, Krispy Kreme said that Entenmann’s boxes looked too much liked theirs[12]. Entenmann’s, whose boxes were white with small blue polka dots, were said to look to similar to Krispy Kreme’s boxes that are white with green polka dots that were a little bit bigger[12]. In 2005, Krispy Kreme customers finally came out and said “What are we all worked up about, they are just donuts" [12]. Krispy Kreme finally dropped the lawsuit when they found out that their shareholders were suing them for the drop in their stocks because by the lawsuit they put against Entenmann’s in the first place. After Krispy Kreme dropped the lawsuit, things went back to normal and their stocks went back up and their stock holders stopped complaining. As far as food safety goes, Entenmann’s takes good care of their food. No one has had any complaints with finding foreign objects in any of their products or saying that Entenmann’s products have harmed them in any way. [13]. In fact, Entenmann’s has been coming out with cholesterol lowering products like their bread manufactured by Entenmann’s Orowheat Bakery in Denver [6].
