Luke Schenn (born November 2, 1989) is a Canadian professional ice hockey player currently playing as a defenceman for the Toronto Maple Leafs of the National Hockey League (NHL). After playing junior hockey with the Kelowna Rockets of the Western Hockey League (WHL), he was selected fifth overall by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft, and signed a three-year entry level contract with the team.
Hockey career
Junior
Schenn started his career with the Kelowna Rockets in 2005–06. He was Kelowna's first pick in the 2004 WHL Bantam Draft. Schenn made his WHL debut on September 23, 2005 against the Vancouver Giants. Later in his first season (October 11), he notched his first WHL goal in his hometown against the Saskatoon Blades. He was an alternate captain for the Rockets for two seasons.[1]
International
In his brief junior career, Schenn has had the opportunity to play for Canada on several occasions. He was a member of Team Canada at the 2007 Super Series, where he helped Canada go undefeated for eight games against Russia. He also wore the maple leaf at Under 18 World Cup Tournament, where Canada won gold. During the 2007–08 season, Schenn was named to the WHL's roster for its part in the ADT Canada-Russia Challenge.[2]
Also during the 2007–08 season, Schenn was named to Team Canada's selection camp roster for the 2008 World Junior Hockey Championships.[3] Schenn was named to the team on December 13, 2007 and was paired with Thomas Hickey to form the top shutdown duo for the team. Canada won the gold medal and Schenn finished the tournament with a team high +/- rating with +5. Schenn was also named to team Canada for the 2009 World Ice Hockey Championships.
Professional
Going into the 2008 NHL Entry Draft, Schenn was noted for his defensive presence, especially for his international play earlier in the year where analyst Pierre McGuire dubbed him "the human eraser".[4] The Toronto Maple Leafs chose Schenn fifth overall, and after impressing the team's coaching staff in the preseason, on October 7 he signed his first professional contract with the Maple Leafs.[5] On October 27, 2008, coach Ron Wilson told Schenn that he would be staying with the Toronto Maple Leafs for the remainder of the season. Schenn acquired his first NHL point (an assist) in a 6-5 shootout win against the New Jersey Devils.
Schenn played for the Rookie YoungStars team in the 2008–09 NHL YoungStars Game. He scored on a breakaway against Montreal Canadiens goaltender Carey Price, as the Rookies beat the Sophomores 9-5. Schenn also scored his first NHL goal with the Leafs against Price on February 7, 2009 in the first period of a game visiting the Montreal Canadiens. The Leafs won the game 5-2, and Schenn finished +1.
On March 14, 2009, Schenn recorded his first multi-point game in a 8-6 win against the Calgary Flames in which he recorded 2 assists. On April 3, he recorded his first powerplay goal. It came against goaltender Martin Biron of the Philadelphia Flyers. On June 18, 2009 Luke was rewarded for his outstanding first season with the Leafs by being awarded a spot on defence with the NHL's 2008-09 All-Rookie Team with fellow blueliner Drew Doughty of the Los Angeles Kings.
Personal
Luke's younger brother Brayden Schenn was a first round draft pick in the 2006 WHL Bantam Draft, won the 2008 WHL Rookie of the Year award, and has completed two seasons with the Brandon Wheat Kings. He also has 2 younger sisters, named Madison and Macy. His parents are Rita and Jeff Schenn.[6] Schenn is an alumnus of St. Joseph High School in Saskatoon, the same school which produced fellow NHL players Colby Armstrong, Riley Armstrong and Jarret Stoll.
