The Cypriot First Division 2008–09 started on 30 August 2008. The defending champions were Anorthosis. APOEL won the championship three games before the end of the season.
This year, for the second time, the championship also featured a group stage. Teams were divided into 3 groups: 1st–4th, 5th–8th and 9th–12th. Points from the main part of the season still counted.
