Ittigen is a municipality in the district of Bern in the canton of Bern in Switzerland.
The municipality was formed in 1983 when it and Ostermundigen were separated from territory once part of Bolligen.
History
Its placename is derived from the Alemannisch "at the people of the Ito", and first appeared in print in 1318 as Yttigen.
Geography
Ittigen has an area of Template:Km2 to mi2. Of this area, 26.4% is used for agricultural purposes, while 13.3% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 58.9% is settled (buildings or roads) and the remainder (1.4%) is non-productive (rivers or glaciers).[3]
Demographics
Ittigen has a population (as of 2007[update]) of 10,688, of which 18.3% are foreign nationals. Over the last 10 years the population has decreased at a rate of -0.6%. Most of the population (as of 2000[update]) speaks German (86.2%), with Italian being second most common ( 2.6%) and French being third ( 2.5%).
In the 2007 election the most popular party was the SVP which received 26.9% of the vote. The next three most popular parties were the FDP (21.2%), the SPS (19.8%) and the Green Party (12.6%).
The age distribution of the population (as of 2000[update]) is children and teenagers (0-19 years old) make up 19.7% of the population, while adults (20-64 years old) make up 65.5% and the seniors (over 64 years old) make up 14.8%. The entire Swiss population is generally well educated. In Ittigen about 75.8% of the population (between age 25-64) have completed either non-mandatory upper secondary education or additional higher education (either University or a Fachhochschule).
Ittigen has an unemployment rate of 2.08%. As of 2005[update], there were 48 people employed in the primary economic sector and about 11 businesses involved in this sector. 912 people are employed in the secondary sector and there are 80 businesses in this sector. 7669 people are employed in the tertiary sector, with 358 businesses in this sector.[3]
