Tekari is a city and a municipality in Gaya district in the Indian state of Bihar and was the centre of erstwhile Tekari Raj. Maharaja Gopalsaran, a Bhumihar Brahmin, was the king of this area in British times. The fort is still there. It is a place of tourist's interest. Some famous schools and colleges are Satendra Narayan Sinha College, Tekari Raj Inter School, RDAV Public School, and Lohia Nagar Mount Carmel High School. Some of the nearby villages are Mow, Jalalpur, Lodipur, Chiraali, Rewai Garh, Rakasiya , SHEONAGAR, Paluhar, Gulzana, and Salempur (Tekari).
The Name 'Tekari'
In South Bihar, the most prominent representative of Bhumihar Brahmin was the Tekari family, whose great estate in Gaya dates back to the early eighteenth century.[1] In Moghul period, Tekari was evolved as a rich estate, protected by Bhumihar Brahmin Kings, were a part of the Moghul Kingdom. Pundits concluded, "this jungle of tetri's(Tetri, a kind of tree) is the place where the fort should be made," and declared it very lucky. Tetri , vis-à-vis Tekari. (Tekari used to be a popular place name during muslim period.It perhaps indicated a place office for local administration and tax collection and residence of local chief.It also have been a market place.
Maharaja Hit Narayan Singh of Tekari was said to have been "a man of a religious turn of mind...who became an ascetic and left his vast property in the hands of his wife" shortly after inheriting a lion's share of the estate in the 1840s.[2]
Geography
Tekari is located at 24°56′N 84°50′E / 24.93°N 84.83°E.[3] It has an average elevation of 82 metres (269 feet).
Demographics
As of 2001[update] India census,[4] Tekari had a population of 17,615. Males constitute 52% of the population and females 48%. Tekari has an average literacy rate of 66%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 74%, and female literacy is 57%. In Tekari, 17% of the population is under 6 years of age.

This is a historic place to be seen in Tekari viz 7aanaa Kila and 9 aanaa Kila, that constitute the famous fort of Tekari which is surrounded by water canal.
Tekari Raj Inter High School
This red brick building, for more than hundred years,the temple of learning,is the landmark of the town.
Famous Tekari Residents
- Dr. Krishna Gopal Singh- In the history of Tekari, if ever any name in medical practice is ever mentioned the name of Dr. K.G.Singh will remain ever. He belonged to that era when in Bihar no Medical college was present and students used to go to Calcutta for learning medicine. Dr.K.G.Singh's property is still present in Tekari and his valuable contributions in caring the people irrespective of their background will never be lost. In fact, he died of measles because he got from one of his patient, at that time the treatment of measles were not found.
- Dr. Girija Shankar Prasaad - Born in Tekari, graduated from Tekari Raj High School topping the Gaya District, Attended Patna Medical College and served Tekari as Medical Officer and Medical Practitioner until he became a global traveler and social worker currently associated with the Indian Red Cross Society in the state of Bihar.
- Dr Ramji Prasad Singh- One of the lecturer of Physics worked at S.N.Sinha college Tekari who later took sanyas and became the master of discourses and leading a community for social works.
- Sri Sanjay Kumar, one of the most brilliant student at Tekari, has left a footmark for all the students who wish to be in Government Service. He is offered more than ten executive post in various departments of Government of India. He has inspired hundreds of students of Tekari to be aware enough for their golden and bright future. Following his footmark, hundreds of students got themselves at important posts in various departments of Government of India. He is born in Tekari and completed his graduation from Gaya College, Gaya with distinction. He always stood first whether it is academic examination or competitive examination. He is now Income Tax Officer in West Bengal and rendering his service to his own country at its fullest. Some of his famous students/followers are Ritesh Kumar, Santosh Kumar and Vikash Kumar Golden who is now Preventive Officer(Customs)."
- Sri Vikash Kumar Golden, a famous student of Tekari Raj Inter School around 1999-1999 and the most talented person of his batch did his matriculation in 1999 from Bihar School Examination Board, Patna. For better education he moved to Jamshedpur, where he completed his Graduation from Jamshedpur Co-operative College, Jamshedpur in 2004. He was the only one student that time who stood first not in the college but in all over the Jamshedpur also. Got inspired by his uncle Sri Sanjay Kumar, Income Tax Officer, he started preparation for the competitive examinations. In his uncle’s guidance, he started his career and stood at a new high. He cleared various competitive examinations and his All India Rank never got down below 36. He always secured a high position for himself. He also got many offer letters for job from various departments of Govt. of India including Department of Revenue. He is now serving his nation in Income Tax Department in Jharkhand.
Tilkut
Tilkut is made of pounded 'tila' or sesame seeds (Sesamum indicum) and jaggery or sugar. Tekari produces the best Tilkut. Tilkut made in Tekari is so soft that it can be broken into pieces by a very soft touch.
