The 2011 IndyCar Series season will be the 16th season of the IndyCar Series. Its premier event will be the 95th Indianapolis 500, scheduled for Sunday, May 29.

Series News

A new IndyCar chassis and engines are expected for this season. Dallara will be the sole chassis supplier.

An engine manufacturer summit took place in Indianapolis on June 24, 2008. The goal of the meeting was to set standards for the 2011 IndyCar Series engine package and encourage more manufacturers to produce engines for the series. Auto manufacturers Alfa Romeo, Audi, BMW, Ford, Ferrari, GM, Honda, Mazda, and Volkswagen were represented at the meeting, alongside engine suppliers AER, Cosworth, Cummins, Ilmor, John Judd, and Speedway Engines. [1][2].

A second manufacturer's meeting took place on September 17. Five auto manufacturers were present at the meeting including Honda, Audi, Alfa Romeo, and Porsche. [3] The new engines will be a turbocharged in-line 4 cylinder [4], or V6 yet to be released and will output about 750 hp (560 kW). [5].

A third meeting is expected to be held in late October.[6] [7]

The 95th Indianapolis 500 will be the third race of the three-year long Centennial era, celebrating the 100th anniversary of the opening of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the 100th anniversary of the first Indy 500.

Possible races

  • The IRL is exploring a future race in Qingdao, China for either 2011 or 2012. A proposed 500,000 seat oval is under consideration according to Chinese government officials. However, this will not be completed until 2012 so if the event occurs in 2011 it will be a street race for a year.[8][9][10]
  • The IRL is considering a revival of the Grand Prix of Cleveland in 2011, provided that local business support is there.[11]
