Khanpur (Template:Lang-ur) is a city and Tehsil of the Rahim Yar Khan District, in the Punjab state of Pakistan.

The city is agricultarally an economic infux as a centre for sugarcane and cotton crops. It is one of the largest Tehsils of the Rahim Yar Khan District, in terms of its area. The famous Cholistan Desert is mainly located in the Khanpur area.

Khanpur is also known as Khanpur Katora; The Urdu word "Katora" is defined as the English word for bowl. This name is used as a common term because Khanpur has had a long history of producing clay bowls.

History

Khanpur (Khanpur Katoora) is one of the oldest cities of the Punjab. Its old large market areas and Bazaar are clear evidence of the old saga of this city. Its long adjoining Shahi Road leads to many cities such as Rahim Yar Khan on one side and Liaquat Pur and Bahawal pur on the other side. In the old times khanpur is famous for its bowl makers and a sweat called paira.

Sport in Khanpur

Cricket: Sport is widely played in the city, and the community of the city thoroughly enjoys sport as an enjoyable alternative in terms of recreation. The city is home to many talented cricketers of Pakistan who have achieved high levels and later gone on to represent national first-class teams as well as top state-wide clubs. The city once used to host a large cricket ground, which was generally maintained by the Mayor of the city and the town committee as well as prominent members of the city community. However, the muncipilty later demolished the ground and constructed a central park, much to the dismay of some people and their demands.

Famous Places & Tourist Attractions

One of the famous tourist attractions of the city is the Brothel House of Khanpur (built in the 18th century for a Nawab). The building structure is a blend of multi-cultural architecture, incorporating a typical 18th-century design as well as a traditional touch of both old and modern form of Pakistani architecture.

Education

The Government Tarqai-Taleem Degree College for Men is providing education in many disciplines. Masters level classes have started in this college. The Government Commerce College and Government Degree College for Women are also playing their role in the increase of the literacy throughout Khanpur. There are also many private School and Colleges, that are also playing their part in the education sector. Some of them are approved for Master Degree classes.

Some private colleges have provided a good education status such as: Government Institute of Commerce- now operating in its new building at Halka 5, Al-barket Computer college near doaba Pulli Khan Pur suburb. Ali Commerce College also take place a great part in the contribution of making good and educated men and woman. Now there also a Law college in khanpur to provide law education. Alpine Degree College for boys and girls.

Central Public Higher Secondary School - provides education, sports and other co-curricular activities. Presenting three different sections for girls, boys and juniors. Al Jannat Cadet Higher school is a very big school in this city.

Cadet College Khanpur The present Government in charge (Pakistan Peoples Party) recently announced to built a Cadet College in Khanpur with the coat of RS300 Millions (initialy). Site and Land has been chosen(270Acres)and soon construction will undergo process. It is however appriciated by the people of Khanpur and special appriciation goes to Main Abdul Sattar MNA and Mian Muhammad Aslam MPA.

Hafeez Shahid is a famous poet of khanpur. He wrote five books of poetry.

He has also written lyrics for two Punjabi films in 70s.He lives in Jinah town. His sixth book is soon coming with the title "Sooraj Badal Raha Hai".

Languages

Siraiki and Punjabi are the major languages that are widely spoken. The national languages of Pakistan, Urdu and English, are also fluently spoken and understood, especially in formal occasions.
