Johnny Test is an animated television series on Cartoon Network and formerly Kids' WB. It premiered on September 17, 2005. Five months later, it was introduced to Cartoon Network UK on January 14, 2006 and then on June 5, 2006, shown every day. It also airs on Teletoon in Canada, and on Cartoon Network in Latin America, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Sweden, the United Kingdom and the United States.

Plot Background

Johnny Test concerns the adventures of Johnny Test, an average 11-year-old suburban boy, his super-genius twin sisters, Susan and Mary, who willingly use their young brother as their test subject for various wicked brainiac experiments, along with his dog Dukey, who was given the ability to talk (via Susan and Mary's experiments). Sometimes, Johnny would also be given strange, powerful and obivious gadgets and gizmos, and even special superpower sources to use in combat or in desperation. The main reason given for the use of their brother and his dog as the test subjects of their lab experiments is because of their crush on Gil, the tan-skinned next-door neighbor always cleaning himself up, whom Susan and Mary want to make him their boyfriend. But incidentally, Johnny and Dukey have other ideas in mind. They cause problems and sometimes "borrow" some of the devices and special powers that the twin sisters had developed and invented to do their own dirty work, and accidentally make a menace to threaten them and then try to stop it. Like most lead characters in other animated TV series, most episodes had Johnny and his dog sometimes often use his sisters' gadgets and special weapons in order to fight evil villains and foil their plans in the process, to save Porkbelly, their home town which is where the Test residence (where they mainly live) is located. Meanwhile, Lila Test, his mother, is a full-brown worker always busy night and day, while his father, Hugh Test, is a bumbling, inept house-husband who has an insane obsession with total hygiene and meatloaf dinners. Serving as the recurring lead arch-enemy is Eugene, who had already gone by his trademark pseudonym, Bling-Bling Boy, does his best to arch-rival the girls' experiments and gadgetar, and take heritage of Susan and make her his bride, and sometimes, the Army would come along and on purpose accidentally interfere with the heroes' advantages to solving puzzles and savin the world. The remainder of the series is overly somewhat similar to that of Dexter's Laboratory which explains the similarities between the characters (Johnny and Dukey are like Dee Dee, Susan and Mary are like a female version of Dexter, their parents are mostly like a reversed version of the other characters' parents, with the father being the household caretaker and the mother being the working everyman, and with Bling-Bling Boy having familiar similarites to Mandark).

Production history

Johnny Test was created and executive produced by Scott Fellows, the creator of the Nickelodeon live-action series Ned's Declassified School Survival Guide. The show premiered On September 17, 2005 on Kids' WB's Saturday morning lineup, alongside Loonatics Unleashed and Coconut Fred's Fruit Salad Island. The first season was produced in-house at Warner Bros. Animation, with some episodes being storyboarded by Atomic Cartoons, and most of the voice recording taking place, in Canada. However, the merger of UPN and The WB into The CW resulted in many budget cuts for the show, and resulted in temporary cancellation. But Cookie Jar Entertainment, based in Canada, decided to take control of the series' production, authorising it as its own project. Due to this change, the writers, storyboarders, and art crew who worked on the first season were let go, resulting in an entirely new crew managing the show. In addition, the budget of the show dropped dramatically, leading to the show being animated in Adobe Flash. The show's opening theme was later changed, with the opening being made of recycled episode footage. It is now regarded as part of Teletoon's original series catalog. More recently, James Arnold Taylor, the voice of Johnny Test had announced that a fourth season is in production.[1]

The fourth season of the show that is currently in production, will premiere on Teletoon, due for broadcast in Fall 2009.[1].

Characters

Main characters

Jonathan "Johnny" Test
He is the main character , a young 11 -year old boy who almost always gets into trouble. He is known as the "kid with the flaming hair"/"flaming hair boy" due to the top of his blond hair having some red highlights. Because he has two genius older sisters, he can live any kid's dream, only to find that some dreams aren't worth living. He is very hyperactive, and is often seen as an idiot for messing with his sister's inventions, causing trouble and mayhem, but just as often proves himself to be extremely clever such as by frequently tricking his genius sisters or saving the day from whatever danger happens to show up. Johnny can be considered very spoiled and stubborn, as he is used to getting what he wants, either through deceit, blackmail, or manipulation. Johnny adopted Dukey from the pound on his eleventh birthday, later gaining a best friend after his sisters turned him into a civilized talking dog. Johnny has an alter ego that he calls "Johnny X", even though it sounds almost exactly like his original name. Johnny X is a superhero that has the power of hurricane hands (speeding wind from his hands), shapeshifting, power poots (powerful farts that create fire) and in the third season gained the power to light himself on fire, sense what others are doing, and the ability to teleport. He was in love with Janet and later Sissy, the latter born out of a hostile rivalry. Johnny hates school and doesn't work hard at all (if anything, he tries avoiding work). Also in most episodes, if not all, as situations give an unexpected turn, he will say "Whoa, didn't see that coming". There have been minor alterations to that phrase and in some cases, Dukey actually says it, among many others. He is addicted to video games, and will do anything to get them (in one episode, he wishes to get a GameDroid QS (Game Boy/Nintendo DS fusion, though he already has this in another). His name is a pun on Jonny Quest.

Dukey
Johnny's talking dog and best friend. He was a very disgusting dog until Susan and Mary enhanced him (including the DNA of all the worlds martial arts experts giving him great Kung Fu abilities). Since then, he can both fetch the paper and read it. He is often the voice of reason to Johnny, but winds up getting manipulated into supporting Johnny's crazy schemes and adventures (usually because of steak). Despite his devotion to Johnny, Dukey frequently expresses deep disdain towards Johnny's less intelligent antics, believing their situation as master and pet is reversed. His dog habits greatly annoy Johnny's sisters, to which Johnny takes deep delight in. Usually once per episode, when trouble arises and there's no alternative, Dukey will say something along the lines of "Here's an idea: RUN!" During situations where it seems that Johnny and everyone else are doomed, he will say "I'm gonna freak out now." before acting completely insane. Similar to Johnny's "Johnny X" form, Dukey also has a secret identity called "Super Pooch", although he is also referred to as "Super Dukey" and "X-Pooch". When in "Super Pooch" form Dukey can fly and in the third season has shapeshifting powers, power poots, the ability to sense what others are doing and the ability to teleport. He has the power to fly as a sidekick (to Johnny) but usually crashes when landing. When there is a ban on pets, he usually disguises himself as a "kid with a rare hair disorder". He is also addicted to steak, coffee and chocolate mint chip ice cream. His Tiny'mon names are Mymuttdog and Dukandra.

Susan and Mary Test

  • Susan Test is a 15-year old super genius and twin sister of Mary. She wears a black skirt, a shirt depicting a star, a lab coat, square glasses, and a star-shaped barrette, and she has straight red hair and blue eyes. Like her sister, Susan harbors a deep love and obsession for the Test's nextdoor neighbor, Gil, although their attempts to attract his attention always end in failure. She is noticeably more self-centered than Mary, which often leads to her downfall. Susan's emotions are more extreme than her twin's, and she tends to be more impulsive. Eugene/Bling-Bling expresses heavy interest in Susan, often causing her to be used as a bargaining chip in negotiations with him. She sometimes wears a blue-green like color one piece swimsuit that is cut out by the sides of her stomach and hips (but only by the top of her hips), and also sometimes Susan's eyes change from blue to green. Susan is the youngest twin.

  • Mary Test is a 15-year old super genius and twin sister of Susan. Mary has a shirt depicting a moon, curly red hair, crescent glasses and a moon-shaped barrette. She has green eyes and often wears baggy blue jeans and sneakers with her trademark moon-shirt and lab coat. Mary has been shown to be more empathetic and sympathetic than her sister. Like her sister, Mary harbors a deep love and obsession for the Test's next-door neighbor, Gil, although their attempts to attract his attention always end in failure. Like her sister, she attends school at the Mega Institution of Geniuses. Mary is prone to believing in the less scientific and more science-fictional, which although receives scorn from her twin, often proves to be correct in the end. Mary seems to be more level-headed than her twin Susan, and Mary tends to be more conservative, as she speaks her mind much less than Susan. She sometimes wears a pink bikini with a boy-short style bottom and crop-top style top. Mary is the oldest twin.

Major characters

Hugh Test
The uptight, obsessive-compulsive father of Johnny, Susan and Mary, and the husband of Lila. He takes the term "Mr. Mom" to a whole new level. Hugh's two biggest obsessions are cleaning and cooking meatloaf, which the rest of the Test family openly despises. If Johnny, Susan, and Mary mess something up, he always wants them to come back before dinner. He also always grounds them from video games, and the lab, respectively, for a month at a time for even the smallest offense. As revealed in one episode, he doesn't understand two things, women and Tiny'mon (which is inspired by Pokémon), which in the latter case is ironic as he becomes a very powerful one in one episode. His name is a pun on Howard Hughes, who was known for being an eccentric hypochondriac. His Tinymon names are Imhisdad and Dadoomerang.

Voiced by: Ian James Corlett

Lila Test
Mother of Johnny, Susan and Mary and the wife of Hugh. She is a businesswoman, though her specific profession is never explained. Mrs. Test isn't seen at home as often as the rest of the family due to her demanding job, but her family always comes first and she never misses out on vacations and family events, despite the fact she always manages to take her work with her one way or another. She is overprotective of Johnny and is actuelly quite skilled in fighting, once easily defeating a professional wrestlier named 'the Caveman' to protect Johnny.

Eugene "Bling-Bling Boy" Hamilton
A major antagonist and friendly fat enemy of Johnny and Dukey, preferring to go by name of "Bling-Bling Boy" (because of his gold jewelry and watches). Most characters usually call him by his real name instead of Bling-Bling Boy, which annoys him greatly. He is a multi-millionaire with unlimited funds at his disposal. He has a big crush on Susan, who doesn't reciprocate his feelings, and often resorts to evil plots or blackmail to try and force her to be his girlfriend. He occasionally teams up with Johnny and Dukey to defeat the other villains when the situation demands it. He seems to be good friends with Johnny and Dukey, despite being a main antagonist of the series. He has Johnny test some of his inventions and occasionally tricks him into doing it, similar to his sisters. Deep down Bling-Bling Boy is insecure due to being fat and having buck teeth although in "Phat Johnny" his weight and buck teeth actually help Bling-Bling Boy become a Hip-Hop star! In another episode, he gained the power to turn objects into gold. He has a mother who punishes him for "embarrassing her" by plotting his evil schemes. He used to also attend the Mega Institution of Geniuses, but left the school after his thesis ate Professor Slopsink's hand.

Gil Next-door
A pretty-boy teenager and Susan and Mary's crush, who doesn't even know they exist, or forgets they exist even though they have met many times, and even have lived next door to him since they were born. Though it has been shown that he noticed them when the girls created three robotic Gil's; he even remembered their names. Much to the great ire of Susan and Mary, Gil considers Johnny his friend (whenever Gil appears when Johnny is around, he shouts, "Hey, Johnny!" and whenever he is not around, he tells Susan and Mary to "Tell Johnny I said Hi!"). In the episode "Coming to a Johnny Near You", In the caption showing when Susan and Mary go to Gil's house, the caption writes "Gill's House" instead of "Gil's House".

Mr. Black and Mr. White
The Buff and Tough Secret Agents. They may be friends with Johnny, Mary, Susan, and Dukey, but since they are secret agents, they are always antagonizing them but whenever they can not handle a crisis, they run to them for help. They are not afraid of anything (although on some occasions, that is only what they say) and in their first appearance could shoot ropes from their wrists but haven't shown this since. They resemble Agents Kay and Jay from the Men in Black films. The irony in their names is Mr. White is African American and Mr. Black is caucasian.

Mr. White voiced by: Scott McNeil
Mr. Black voiced by: Bill Mondy

Mitchell "Bumper" Randalls
A local bully who is seen picking on Johnny. He, however, has a sensitive side. Bumper loves roses and he even has a rose garden. He has two cats: a white cat called "Cuddles" and a orange tomcat. He also has a lizard named Mr.Muncher.

Voiced by: Scott McNeil

Sissy Blakely
A girl who is a rival of and has a crush on Johnny, but tends to hide it very well through bullying him and asserting superiority over him. Johnny also seems to have a crush on her, although he doesn't seem to be aware of it (e.g., when Johnny refuted Dukey's claim that he actually likes Sissy by announcing that he hates Sissy, Dukey told him, "At your age, Johnny, it's the same thing"). However, the two are constantly competing against each other. If Sissy beats him, she will brag about it. If Johnny wins, he'll either get caught into a situation because of it, or brag as much as her. In one episode, Johnny pretends to get used to being bullied by Sissy and they fall in love with each other along with Dukey and Missy. She seems to be the victim to the show's twists, adventures, and misadventures at the end of the episodes that she appears in. She appears in the first and second season, but made a brief cameo in the background during an episode in season three. She has blonde hair with a red lightning bolt pattern, multiple ear piercings & white sashes on her skirt with pants underneath.

Recurring and guest characters

Janet Nelson, Jr.
Johnny's former crush. A vain, shallow and self-centered popular girl that is usually mean and inconsiderate to Johnny and appoints him as a loser. She has a love-hate relationship with him, but she is too popular to express the love part. She is also extremely intelligent. She only appears in season one and one episode in season two. She appears once in the third season in the background, talking to another student. She hasn't appeared since then.

Voiced by: Kathleen Barr

Missy
Sissy's pink labradoodle dog, who is to Sissy what Dukey is to Johnny. Unlike Dukey, however, she is not modified in any way, unable to communicate through speech. She apparently has the ability to eat wood and barbed wire. Dukey has a crush on her.

Voiced by: Brittney Wilson

General
Mr. White and Black's Boss, the General is leader of the army base stationed within Porkbelly. Loud and forgetful, he frequently takes action whenever the situation becomes too large for the Tests to maintain, although his efforts never fare any better. He is prone to overkill and rarely considers what result his actions may have on civilians, to the point he fired at a forest, a inhabited area, and even a place were children were playing all in an attempt to destory a monster (which was actually a robot being controled by Johnny and Dukey).

Voiced by: Lee Tockar

Mr. Henry Teacherman
Johnny's class teacher, who Johnny believes is "out to get him". Mr. Teacherman is tough, but only because deep down, he knows that there is a great student inside of Johnny.

Professor Slopsink
Professor at the Mega Institute of Technology (M.I.T.). One of Bling-Bling Boy (Eugene)'s experiments ate his hand (twice, his original one and his robotic one),so now he has a robotic hand. It was once used to demonstrate Susan and Mary's Gold making machine and was turned gold, but this hasn't appeared since. He's Susan and Mary's teacher. Professor Slopsink has a German Accent.

The Johnny Stopping Evil Force 5
A supervillain team that attempted to destroy Johnny but where defeated. They later reappeared and gained some of Johnny's 'Johnny X' powers but ended up helping Johnny save the world from Dark Vegan, due to them being unable to take over the world if Dark Vegan destroyed it. The group is made up of:

  • Mr. Whack-O!: The team's leader. Despite being the owner of a toy company, he deeply loathes kids, and makes incredibly destructive toys in hopes of ridding the world of children. Though he originally has no powers, he seem highly intellgent, if not insane.
  • Brain Freezer: The former janitor and coffee guy of Susan and Mary's school. He is a self-proclaimed genius, with his inventions typically involving both coffee and ice. He has a "Chillachino Machine" that can freeze anything including creating armor made of ice. It appears he is immune to the blasts from his freeze gun, as he uses them to transform into his supervillian form by blasting himself but his 'Chillachino' will still freeze him solid if he drinks it. He often makes ice-related puns, parodying the mannerisms of Batman's Mr. Freeze.
  • The Beekeeper (Doc Beebles): A man in a beekeeper's suit that can control bees. His secret identity is Doc Beebles, maker of Piles 'O Honey Bars. His debut plot was to use his bees to eat all other candy in the world so his Piles 'O Honey Bars would finally sell (none bought his bars because they were naturally sweet and healthy), though he really wanted the kids to be healthier. He is currently reformed and likes Johnny, and has dropped out of the force to be replaced by Zizrar. He loves saying "bee" as "be" as a pun. (NOTE: He's only seen using "bee" as "be" while he's wearing the Bee Keeper suit.)
  • Mr. Mittens: An evil cat with the same modified genetic structure as Dukey. He once tried to turn the entire world into cats (with the exception of Albert). This eventually failed. In one episode he had turned back into a normal cat until changed again by a ray gun. Like Dukey, he is highly intellgent but seems to lack Dukey's fighting skills.
  • Albert: Mr. Mittens's butler. He isn't seen hating Johnny, but he was forced into the squad because he had to take care of Mr. Mittens all the time.
  • Zizrar: King of the Mole People and Beekeeper's replacement (in the The Johnny Stopping Evil Force 5), who often attempts to take over the world, only to fail due to his intense aversion to light. He is voiced by Scott McNeil.

Dark Vegan
A rival of Johnny. He is the ruler of Vegandon, a seemingly utopian planet composed completely of vegans, which at first appear peaceful and well-meaning, but in reality, they go to other planets and sap them of their resources, which is what he tried to do to Earth on two occasions and nearly succeeded. He was defeated in both cases by Johnny with the help of his rebellious daughter and the second time with the help of the Johnny Stopping Evil Force 5. It should be noted he is the only major villain in the series that has actually attempted to destroy the Earth. He is a parody of Darth Vader (though given how he has a sliding face mask and nerdy face, he's far more likely a parody of Dark Helmet) and a vegan.

Tim Burnout
A classmate of Susan and Mary and the owner of Mr. Mittens. His last name refers to the way he acts.

Blast Ketchup
The main character of the Tiny'Mon show and Tiny'Mon games, Blast Ketchup has dreams of becoming the World's Greatest Tiny'Mon Master. He always takes the first words of what people say, mistaking them as Tiny'Mon (Resulting in Dukey's Tiny'Mon name: Mymuttdog and Hugh's Tiny'Mon name: I'mhisdad). Blast Ketchup has a sidekick that is always by his side. Because Johnny always beats him at Tiny'Mon, Blast is eager for revenge but he does admit Johnny is highly skilled. He is a parody of Pokémon main character Ash Ketchum, and his rapid movements and mannerisms are comedic parodies of anime characters, though his character design is sort of a fusion between Ash and Dan from Bakugan.

Hank Anchorman
An anchorman for Porkbelly News. In early season 1, he had blonde hair, was thinner and younger, but later on, he had brown hair (which was a wig), was older and had a different face.

The Mayor
The Mayor of Porkbelly is a short bald man who still lives with his mother. He easily panics at the first sign of trouble, and will not hesitate to cave into pressure. Whenever a supervillain appears, he would always agree to swear allegiance with the villain and change the name of the city before the villain even says anything.

Lunch Lady
The lunch lady at Porkbelly Middle School who has greenish skin and speaks in a German accent. She can be very cruel when students don't eat her food.

Lolo
Susan and Mary's midnight blue lab monkey who they sometimes test their experiments on. She has a strange metal hatpiece on her head, the reason for which is not explained, although it is similar to the Pipo Helmet from Ape Escape.

Smash Badger
Johnny's favorite video game character, who is a destructive badger. He is probably a parody of Crash Bandicoot and his laugh is based on Woody Woodpecker's laugh, although his costume resembles the plumber suit worn by Mario.

Dr. Swampbrain
Dr. Swampbrain is Smash Badger's archenemy. He takes a hating to him and defeats him twice (the first time was in Johnny's game, and the second was when Johnny brought them to life). He is a parody of Doctor Neo Cortex, as Smash is a parody of Crash Bandicoot.

Mega Roboticle
Johnny's red hero robot action figure that he used Susan and Mary's 'Static Animator' to bring to life. Mega Roboicle is the leader of The Turbo Toy Force. He parodies Buzz Lightyear and Optimus Prime.

Nasteria
The evil dark blue robot action figure that he brought to life so Mega Robticle would have an 'exciting' battle. Mega Roboticle is Nasteria's arch enemy from the fictional series they're based on. He proved too powerful for Roboticle to defeat alone and defeated him and anyone else that attacked him. He was destoryed and returned to the toy store by The Turbo Toy Force. He parodies Zurg and Megatron.

The Turbo Toy Force
A group of toys that were animated and given superpowers by Johnny, Dukey, Mary, and Susan to battle Nasteria. The group is consist of: Malibu Stacy (although her name is not spoken, it can be seen during the close caption; name is a homage to the Simpsons), a male doll, a toy bunny rabbit, a toy dragon, a chew toy, and formely, Mega Roboticle.

Badias
Another of Blast Ketcuhp's Tiny'mon. He has a resemblance to Screechereen and can shoot out powerful lasers from his eyes which prove a nusiance. He seems to be based off Shadow Lugia from Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness.

Baboomerang
The "evolved" form of Kadoomerang. He's owned by Blast Ketchup. Whenever Blast orders Baboomerang to attack, he targets Dukey.

Screechereen
Evolved from the almost completely weak Cuddlebuns (the reason is because he can't be trained; it seems all the training it needed was "love".) She is a legendary Tiny'mon that many believed didn't exist and is incredibly strong. In Return of Johnny'mon, he is brought up as female. Looks like Lugia from Pokémon but her evolving from an extremely weak pokemon but being incredibly strong is likely based off Magikarp.

Repto-Slicer
A blue-green mutant lizard. He was originally owned and created by Eugene, but decided to stay with Johnny after he tamed him. He earned his name from his ability to have razors potrude from his entire body; he even has a chainsaw for a tongue. He excels at salsa-making.

Miss X and Miss Z
They are two cyborg minions of Bling-Bling Boy.

The Extreme Teen Team
Three skateboarding teenagers who tend to steal all the cheese puffs and Red Gush (parodying Gatorade) in Porkbelly. They are defeated when Johnny passes off a detention center as an "extreme" detention center and lures them in. In "Phat Johnny" one of the Extreme Team has a cameo as a rock musician

Jillian
Dark Vegan's daughter who doesn't approve of her father's evil ways. She makes friends with Johnny and helps him save his world twice. She says that if Johnny were 16, she would date him.

Speed McCool
A famous actor. In the movies he is in, he can be seen with a chimpanzee. Johnny is a fan of him. He is a parody to Speed Racer.

Nobeard
The feeble pirate Johnny meets. He is underappreciated and tormented, just like Johnny is. However, when he helps Nobeard defeat his brother, he's finally treated fairly.

Blackbeard
Nobeard's brother. He only cares about money and gold. With Johnny's help, he is defeated by Nobeard.

Greybeard
Blackbeard and Nobeard's father.

Flink
A tour guide who created a mechanical model of Pork-ness Monster in order to show it off for publicity, only to fail after it got away.

Wild Whippin' Willie
The leader of a group of motorcycle repo-men who rob the dude ranch where the Tests stay at. Johnny defeats him, however.

Tree Monster
The monsters Johnny creates from trees.

Golf monster
A monster created from a golf case.

Electricity Monsters
Monsters created from power lines. The only way to defeat the is to spray water on them.

Mega Monster
When Porkbelly is invaded by monsters, the only way to stop them is to create the ultimate monster with guns, a helicopter, missiles and a fire engine. It it this weapon that wins Mr. Black and Mr. White their trip to the Fiji Islands in Johnny Test: Monster Starter.

Truck Monster
A monster created from a garbage truck.

Kadoomerang
Kadoomerang is one of Blast Kechup's Tiny'mon. He is a turtle but when he evolves into Baboomerang he is a baboon.

Cuddlebuns
Cuddlebuns was the weakest Tiny'Mon until Dukey/Mymuttdog showed up. He is nearly impossible to train and almost can't fly. It is Johnny's love and affection that powers him up.

Dukundra
Dukundra is Mymuttdog (Dukey)'s evolved form. He has a mace on the end of his tail. He is very strong and can launch lightening from his mouth

Dadoomerang
Dadoomerang is Imhisdad (Howard)'s evolved form. His "Grounding 'Rang" maneuvre traps a Tiny'Mon into a inescapable dimension, literally "grounding it for life".

Road Burn
A mutant monster truck erected by Bling-Bling Boy. He destroys other monster trucks in order to obtain dominance, which infuriates Johnny. With Susan and Mary's help, he creates Roadburn a girlfriend, which results in a baby monster truck.

Ginger
She is Road Burn's wife. She mated with Road Burn and had a baby truck.

Baby Truck
The baby that Road Burn and Ginger had. He is the only monster truck that Johnny is old enough to ride.
