K-LOVE is a Contemporary Christian music radio programming service in the United States operated by EMF Broadcasting. As of November 2008, K-Love's programming is carried on 412 FM stations and translators.[1] K-Love claims listenership of 125,000 people each week via the Internet and more than 1.46 million listeners weekly on the radio network.
K-Love's studios and offices are located in Rocklin, California, near Sacramento.[2] The service uses a number of "primary" FM signals to provide broadcast feeds to other stations and translators.
Programming
K-LOVE's weekday DJs include Lisa Williams, JD Chandler, David Pierce, Larry Wayne, Sheila Richards, and Greg Brown. Weekend hosts include Scott Smith, Kelli Caldwell, and Eric Allen.[3]
K-LOVE used to have a morning show hosted by Jon and Sherry Rivers, who broadcasted from their ranch in Texas. However, this was discontinued in March 2009 due to family issues.
K-LOVE plays artists such as Mercyme, Third Day, Steven Curtis Chapman, tobyMac, Chris Tomlin, Casting Crowns, and Newsboys, among others.
History
K-LOVE began as a single radio station, KCLB-FM, in 1982, in Santa Rosa, California as a result of the efforts of a former San Francisco disc jockey, Bob Anthony (Fogal).
In 1988, coverage expanded after the transmitter was moved to a better location following a fire that destroyed 9,000 acres (36 km2) around the original transmitter site. Encouraged by public support, KCLB become K-LOVE Radio in 1988, and additional stations were licensed and began operating.[2] [4]
In 1999, K-Love and Air 1 (a Christian music service targeted at younger listerners) were combined under the Parent Organization named Educational Media Foundation.
K-LOVE uses a network of satellite fed FM stations and broadcast translators to carry the signal across much of the United States. Most (but not all) of the stations that carry K-Love are owned by EMF. Because EMF is a non-profit entity, the FCC has granted waivers of the requirement that each station have a local studio in the community of service.
On October 1, 2007, Mike Novak was named CEO and President of EMF, K-Love, and Air1, replacing Dick Jenkins, founder of EMF Broadcast Networks.[5]
In June 2008, Mike Novak, President of K-LOVE and Air 1, announced on air that their previous spring pledge drive was less than successful, and they were being forced to stop all expansions, freeze hiring, make cutbacks, and even sell a network radio station.[citation needed]
On March 28th, 2009, it was announced that Jon and Sherry Rivers will no longer be hosting K-LOVE's popular morning show, due to family issues. Host Lisa Williams has assumed the duties of hosting the program. It is unknown if Jon and Sherry will return to K-Love.
